This video is for incoming Term 1 students. These are some items that I highly recommend bringing with you.
( Long video, maybe watch at a faster playback speed)
***Honorable Mentions:***
- A physical copy of the First Aid book for Step 1 (especially if you like having physical copies of textbooks over PDF copies)
-Coffee Maker
-A Power strip extension (for more plugs)
-Full length Mirror (would be nice to have, hard to pack, but would be expensive to buy on the island)

It's crazy how many things were have to pack for comfortable living and I love your insight. But how are we supposed to fit them all into 2 suitcases with laundry detergent, kitchen and dining stuff too? How did you fit them all? Did you cook?
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 лет назад
Sally hey sorry for the late reply. You can get all your kitchen and laundry detergent stuff here but if there are certain items you love to cook/eat with then bring it. But yeah it’s tough to pack everything. You can bring the essentials your first term. And bring all the rest in your second term. You can also find your future roommates on Facebook and discuss what you’re bringing with them to save space. Don’t forget that Brita pitcher though!!!

What made you choose SGU for medical school? The reason why I asked is because I personally may try going there if I failed to get into a medical school in the USA (both MD and DO).
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 лет назад
Hey! yeah the reason for me was because of timing. I didn''t think i was going to be able to get into a US med school. and I basically didnt want to wait another year and a half to retake my MCAT apply and wait for interviews (if i was lucky enough to get any). so i applied to sgu, i got in, and i was able to start almost right away. and i am glad i did.

Did you do the global scholars program in Newcastle, UK? If you did/didn't, can you explain why you chose the path that you did? I'm planning on applying to SGU but not sure if I should go straight to the island or do 1 year in the UK first. I'm a Canadian btw so the loan issue that American students face if they choose the KBT program wouldn't be an issue. Also, do you prefer having physical copies of the textbooks or PDF versions?
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 лет назад
Hey awesome questions. I did not do the KBT program. it sounded nice but like you mentioned the student loan process was an issue. also to be honest i wasn't very interested in going to UK for my first year. I wanted to be on the island from the start. idk why, but i felt it would be better to get my bearings that way. Its also a very small class that you will be in if in the UK, like 60-100 people. i did not want to be in such a small environment. i do know that people who do go there can go country hopping on their down time. so it is completely up to you. i am happy i was in Grenada from the start. also, i always used to be a physical textbook kind of guy. but ever since the Ipad Pro with the apple pencil i never looked back. it makes things in medical school much easier. all your books in one device. makes highlighting and annotating much easier. and searching for topics much faster. i didnt use a single physical copy of my textbooks. i only recommend buying a physical copy of First Aid, just in case. thats the book that matters

Hey Bro, I just arrived on the campus a couple days ago. I just had a quick question. I see you have a Razer laptop...did your charger ever stop working on you? And how has the battery life been for lecture? I have one too and was just thinking that I should've brought along another charger just in case. Thanks in advance!
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 6 лет назад
Awesome dude. welcome to the island. hope you're adjusting well. You know I have had it for one full year now, and I have had no critical failure type of problems with it. Although i have heard about it being faulty on forum threads. But I wouldn't worry. My charger even has a tiny bit of coil whine which was super scary at first, but nothing has happened still. So you should be good. Its been holding up. ohh just be careful when you place stuff on your shelves. I use to place my deodorant on the shelf near the edge for easy access, but it eventually fell straight down on my laptop, denting the back of the monitor.... leaving a little white mark on my screen. :( let me know if you got any questions.

no problem. the dorm room this video was taken in is called morris alpert. and yes these are the triple dorms. where each student has their own bedroom but the single bathroom, shower, and kitchen is shared right outside in the rest of the suite. you can get a better idea in my other video of the dorm room tour. the video icon is the toilet seat

Hey bro, how much have you spent on books, tuition, food, and living?
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 3 года назад
What’s up cousin. Books are part of tuition. It’s like an extra grand+. Your student loans come out to roughly roughly 90k a year and then you get 7-10k left over for spending. Rent comes out to a fair price. Like the dorms came out to 1300 a month if I remember correctly

Genuine question that I can't seem to find the answer for anywhere, but do you guys get long enough breaks to come back home and visit (summer breaks, month off etc.)? I'm looking into applying to SGU except for the vet school!
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 6 лет назад
Hey! So the breaks for the medical program generally work out as 3-4 weeks off for winter break, and our summer was 6 weeks(we had a really short summer because we had to come in 6 weeks early in order to do our term 3, which is a quick 6 week term).. where other students got a full 12 weeks off for summer and just got back to the island. it seems like for the vet program, it follows pretty closely with the normal college semester vacations. one thing is that some holidays are not recognized here, like thanksgiving or spring break i think. But you can definitely find time to get away and get back home, its especially easier if you live on the east coast. I will send you the link for the schedule for vet. check your inbox

Hey there, firstly ty so much dat u exist, i was some1 from sgu who can help through all this in detail. I am from india n i have applied to SGU and hopefully with in a week i will be interviewing, so can u plz help me with, wat kind of a qstns. They can ask, how it works ?
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 лет назад
Hey, congratulations. thank you for that too. i really appreciate it. since you're in india i'm sure they will be doing a skype interview. what made me feel better was knowing that it was a very casual interview and the person who will be interviewing you is most likely a recent graduate from the school. so they are normal people just like you and I. they asked the standard interview questions, most importantly "why medicine?". so if you can have a short and concise answer that can tell a lot about yourself and your desires then you will be good. i suggest you don't go into the "i wanna help people" answer, even if thats why you are doing it. i only say that because any interviewer probably hears that 100 times a day. so try to be honest with yourself and with your interviewer, that will only help you, and help you stand out more. do some self reflecting and get down to what really drives you and try to turn that into a short, clear answer. also i think they asked "what i think was a problem that faced medicine and the medical community today".. I'm sure coming from India, especially in certain regions, you see that there is limited access to health care.. things like this. again its a very relaxed interview, Be confident with yourself. and again remember that they are seeing if you're a normal person and if they would want to work with you in the future. good luck

Q1. Can you buy stuffs from amazon while staying in Grenada. If yes, How much do I need to expect for shipping fee and time to get there??
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 лет назад
Hey Joseph. It’s basically very impractical to buy stuff from amazon while out on the island. I’m sure it will get here to the school. Time frame is maybe around 2 weeks (hard to say because everything needs to go through customs). But it will definitely cost wayyy more in shipping. I remember checking when I first got here for an estimate to ship a small book, it was $50 shipping. So it’s pretty important to bring all your vital necessities with you when you first come here. And then after your first term you can go back home and bring back all the extra stuff that makes you happy and comfortable. So try to get all the necessities down on your first trip.
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 лет назад
You can also look into shipping a barrel, or order all your stuff from amazon to your home in the US, and then ask a loved one to ship it all in one care package to you which is a good idea. But be careful if it’s electronics, customs can charge you a lot for import taxes. So again try to bring it all with you.
@junegill
@junegill 5 лет назад
Thank you SO much Sean. I heard "shipping a barrel" couple of times, but I found that it is literally shipping a barrel. D: . . .. I am thinking of going to SGU or Ross, and your youtube helps me making a decision. :]
