Awesome how you can create custom light shafts with geometric animations! Really learnt something here... thanks guys!

I'd use a bright projector in a large open space placed directly above the camera, then project a map, or something else that could be navigated/slowly revealed by the talent holding a piece of paper - or something else that would catch the image - and moving it around to show different parts of the projection. That way the only part of the projection that would be totally visible would be the part where the paper is, and the rest of the light would just fall off, or be difficult to see on the talent's body. I'm thinking of using this effect for a film noir music video so the detective could be explaining what happened and moving the piece of paper - or his map he's holding, or whatever - to show where the event took place and how they happened. Just need to design and animate the map, then choreograph the actor for that. PS. Great video, you deserve way more subscribers.

We did the downward-pointing projection of geometric shapes over the performers thing at Lambeth College in London in 2009 using a salvaged overhead projector mirror at 45 degrees in front of a projector already rigged horizontally in a cage. Worked a treat and was very quick to rig. Nice video.

Apologies if you answered this question already but what kind of projector would you recommend? Love the content! Thank you.

I would use the projector as a green screen, or a substitute. I will have the talent in front of the wall which is being processed on without allowing light from the projector to hit the subject. then frame up things to have the subject in frame and the wall behind them with the projected image/video.

Imagine having a puppet rigged together with the Projector and camera on a dolly and then a singing face projected on the puppet walking through a dark street / city scene? Sound´s pretty baller imo. Projection mapping on a human face in general must be pretty crazy! Great episode once again keep it up with the great content and products guys!

I would backlight a dancer in a hazed studio, and have their choreography play in tandem to the shapes created around them by the rays. i.e. dancing within a black box surrounded by white, having ribbons of light (projected lines) flying around the dancer, creating thin walls for the dancer to "break" through, etc.

Great video! there isn´t much information out there about projectors. Would be great to know how many lumens the projector had and things to have into account when mixing a projector with tungsten sources, maybe in another video

Something I've been dreaming of for a long time, is to project live visuals on a seamless that surrounds the stage during performances and music videos. Especially in classical music, which has a very wide dynamic range, but also lots of "tonal colors", the story of the music could be visualised only by those projections, which in turn would be the only light source reflecting back on the musicians. Ideally - and this is where it gets tricky - the projections react to the music being played in realtime, probably being picked up by individual mics at the instruments. Kind of like the psychedelic things Media Player used to do to accompany music, but reactive and real time. Especially for classical music this would be pretty revolutionary...

The projector effect that I'd like to try for a music video is directly above or at an angle into a pool of water for a cool underwater scene rich with changing colors and shapes. That would be really cool!!
@Peter_ChapmanDP

I want to do a projector effect with some hanging mirrors, empty frames and two projectors, one from top right and top left. Refracting the light off the mirrors and frames. With people dancing in it and some projected set changes you'd get an awesome effect.
@ByBlissakai

Good technique that clearly proves to be successful. My only issue is finding a space that would have beams in the ideal spots other than the projector being above this is definitely something i would use and not only for music videos!

I would like to try using two projectors both coming from above in a different angle to simulate reflection on water. I think that if I use it in a dark enough room with some blue gels, it would make a nice underwater effect. Do you think that would work?
@philipp7pc

Hey guys! Nice to feature thus technique on your channel. It might be worth noting that frame rates (of your camera and your projector) and the creation of the image (3chip vs colour wheel) are important factors to consider before you start ... and get disappointed because it just doesn't look as cool as it should.

Awesome video, some really nice insight into projecting. I would use a projector to create a false and confusing shadow effect, so that you have a warped sort of optical illusion. It would be projected onto a large wall where the character walks along, it gives a nice practical effect to create a despotic/uneasy feel.

I would use the projector for cheaper alternatives to green screen (or to save time in post) those bars of light at 2:45 could be used as an underground fight club- as a practical; it would make for some beautiful cinematography! Love the work y'all do!

GREAT VIDEO!!!! I would use the effect of putting a projector of a character eye I would buy the cheap 10 dollars mini projector and place it on the characters eye then get a micro shot of the characters eye the projector can show what the character is thinking or a cool effect of having different color eyes. This is a cheap and cool way of doing it THANK YOU JUSTIN JONES I JUST ADDED YOU ON INSTAGRAM!!!! I WATCH AND COMMENT EVERY VIDEO!!!! KEEP UP THE WORK!!!

Some SUPER cool ideas in this video. I tried it once before using images generated from a screensaver program, bar some sync issues it worked pretty well. Would love to try it again with a better projector and some images that interact with a dancer, the light being a member of the dance and it's own character rather than just a cool light source. Thanks for the inspiration!

I would like to try projecting onto a transparent screen behind the talent while simultaneously projecting onto the front of them. Two layers of video-- on the screen and from the front. That would partially eliminate the talent's shadow and probably create some cool effects. Then, if I really wanted to mix things up, I would add a third projector shooting from above and a fourth from below. That's getting a little complex though.

well, I will try to make 2 half circles are moving & flying right next each other in After Effect and then output it to a dvd, play it back on Projector to a white wall. Plus, another projector 3D Beam from the top. I think its gonna be cool. thanks for the video and techniques Ted & Justin. u guys are the best! liked

I'd love to use a projector to create a sort of in-camera double exposure for a music video. I'd probably need a really high intensity projector, but I think it would help create something that still retains a sense of realism in spite of its surreal look.
@MichaelDHead

A great projector use would be when a character is looking at a computer screen and you want the same image to play on their face. This is similar to what was done with a raptor in Jurassic Park, but 'tis great to show computer interaction (or smartphone on a smaller scale). Remember to flip the projected image!

I love digital projection mapping! Thought about this a lot in my undergrad. I would create a digital interactive space that invites a user to interact with the projector - i.e. riding an exercise bicycle, speaking into a microphone, or moving in front of a motion sensor. The user's action would cause reactions to the projector, advancing the narrative that I want to tell. After seeing this video, I would like to source footage from NASA to bring the cosmos to the public. I can see users mesmerize by the stars, unknowingly learning how light pollution affects society. :)

I would love to use a projector to back light a film noir scene in a home studio with seats etc like a movie theater.. Would use a character smoking a cigar with a gangster hat pulled down over the eyes and light the face with one other light source with a 15 degree grid ..Thanks for this video..keep up the great work..

I used this projector effect in a dance film I made called "Tabloid" its on my profile if you wanna watch it. However, I projected images from above angled down on subjects leaving a flat 2D image while camera moved in 3D space. Interesting effect.

I'd project a live feed of the dancer, captured with a second camera. Flip the image around so the performer could dance with it's own mirror image, captured in a wide shot. Thinking about it, mounting the projector on a videohead would enable the crew to move the mirrored actor, thus being less static. Then it's all up to performers and crew to set up a cool show. So, that is what I'd like to try, I guess. I'd also like to try that Tri8, btw :)

Nice trick! I would use the projector to get a retrò style with the green screen effect hitting the wall and not the talent that would be lit separately. Another shoot would be projecting on a silk geometrical shapes from behind silhouetting the talent but I don't know if the silk would do the trick. and third using an animated horizontal line or graphics to simulate a laser scan in a sci-fi short or something.. a little bit of haze to enhance the rays and it's done. Another shoot would be projecting in real time what the camera is shooting reversed or normal in order to get an analogic double exposure of the talent maybe adding some distortion/glitch effect to get really sick.
@bryanemurphy

Super COOL Video!!! I think I would like to try a "Lost in Past Memories" effect with the projection on the face of the talent or across their body and the wall. Also, the "Alien Abduction" effect with some trippy kaleidoscopic images would be really cool too!

Awesome video! I think it would be really cool to use the projector as a side light. I'd like to try animating a simple vertical white line that moves left to right on the screen and project it onto the talent, product, or whatever subject you're filming. I think you could get a really cool effect, especially with haze/fog, where the subject would transition between being side lit to silhouetted. I bet slowing the animation down quite a bit could yield a pretty creative result!

One thing I would try is putting real Geometric shapes in the scene and than light them with 3D prjections, seen this kind of effect a lot and it looks awesome when you use different projector angles than just from the camera to the object.

@bacnic
@bacnic 7 лет назад
This is hard to explain... it's an analogic version of a CGI render. The setup is the talent in the middle and two projectors, on each side left and right. The talent is lit in the first scene and has only underpants the second scene the talent is fully dressed (technological suit for example) and it is in the same place of the previous shoot. the transition between the two would be an over exposed ray from the projectors that scan the actor top to bottom in each clip. And with a simple mask in premiere, sinking the videos to match the rays, transitioning from one to the other. the problem is the high light ratio between the projector and the actor's illumination. A nice add would be a motion contolled circle dolly shoot to get a more advanced shoot but in this case if you have the money to get the motion controlled gear, you can afford a little CGI : )

Amazing work Justin! I would totally use hyperlapses, time-lapses, astral-lapses and use a combination of ones which come from cities, traffic, architecture, etc and juxtapose/intercut with those found in nature (think astral-lapse, sunset, opening of a flower, etc) and then PROJECT that LOOPED video on a bare back. Then you can film with a zoom lens and do Pans and Tilts, Close and Wide shots so your audience can barely pick up that you're filming a nude body being used as a canvas and painted with projected light and colorful imagery! My two cents. :)

What fabric do you recommend for using a see thru projection screen in front and a back screen with people in between with nature on the back screen and weather like rain and lightning on the front screen? And is it possible to flip the seen so the audience see the actor true a window and the back is showing the inside of the house? (Is it possible to use the same front screen on both effects)? Do you think the projector is better on the back of everything showing the picture on the back screen from behind and the one in the front from (well) the front? ;) I hope you can understand the picture I'm trying to "paint" for you...

I would like to try out projecting an image on a car to make it look like it's moving! I would use an image of little different coloured lights or even brightly lit buildings at night moving in a linear fashion so the reflection from the window catches it and makes it look like the vehicle is moving in a city. I saw that effect in a BTS scene of Guardians of the Galaxy when they projected a space sequence on the spaceship and I would like to modify that sequence for a street scene that I'd like to do!

you dont need anything that bright (and therefore expensive) modern cameras will easily pick up the weakest of projectors. id advise spending around £150 upwards, i have two at that price range which are battery powered too and very small, look at the viewsonic m1. of course this guy is using a £10k projector, but you simply dont need it, u just need light.
