Futurist-Inventor Ray Kurzweil sees a world coming where humans merge with technology allowing us to literally upgrade our life span and intelligence. Considering his predictions about the future have been right about 86% of the time, we’d be wise to listen. While this idea makes some nervous Ray believes A.I. surpassing our own intelligence is the only way for mankind to take the next step forward. The author of “How to Create A Mind” discusses his optimism behind a hybrid future on this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu.
SHOW NOTES:
Ray and Tom discuss useful strategies and thinking models for problem-solving. [2:30]
Ray describes his early years as an entrepreneur and gives advice for the current landscape. [10:54]
Ray details the progress being made in extending and upgrading human life. [16:20]
Ray breaks down singularity and why the world is consistently getting better. [24:40]
Ray reveals the impact he wants to have on the world. [32:59]
QUOTES:
“Part of my philosophy is failure is just success deferred and I think actually if you knew of all of the obstacles you'd meet you would never start a project.” [3:13]
“Nothing worthwhile is going to present itself without challenges.” [4:56]
“It's only intelligence that enables us to make progress.” [33:27]

Ray Kurzweil is a true visionary, and he has been a reference of mine for years. He actually took time to answer questions that I had about the Singularity when I was in high school a few years ago when I emailed him. He even sent me a signed copy of his book! Great interview Tom!

Ray is having an entry type of lucid dream if it's one at all. When I have had lucid dreams I have been deeply asleep, not in that light state where you are almost awake. It is an unquestionable experience where you become completely aware and conscious but realize you also deeply asleep. I think some people have never had a true lucid dream but wish they had and this sounds like one of those.

Oops didn't spot the comment a year ago asking what the memory trick is that I use. The particular memory trick that works for me is to associate my findings with an animal, like a penguin. I'll put all of the information I need "inside" a penguin. When I wake up I'll think of penguins and then remember all the stuff. I learned this from someone else, I think from some documentary or something like that.

What I like most about Ray (other than his genius intellect) is that he is incredibly calm and composed. He doesn't show any hint doubt when expressing his bold ideas. But I find it a bit odd that he has signed up for cryogenic freezing of his body if he dies (it's odd because he says he has entered "stage 2", and that he is already gaining years as he age).

*"What I like most about Ray (other than his genius intellect) is that he is incredibly calm and composed."* The drugs explain the last part of your sentence -- well, the word lethargic explains his demeanour better -- but 'his genius intellect' is nonexistent. Great episode. It's fascinating that even though he was describing the technological singularity in a positive light, it was so easy for my mind to deep dive into why those things might end up hurting the human race, like what form inequality would take if some people had access to this technology and others didn't, how this much intelligence might be abused, etc. Which really went back to an earlier point he made--we are badly equipped to see how good the world is right now. Negativity bias is a wild ride! Congrats on getting such an incredible voice on the show!

Also, I remember him quite clearly in a documentary experimenting with about 40 supplements a day he was taking at the time, maybe some 20 years ago or so. The results both on him and on some other volunteers were amazing! He was such a good influence on me! I started with that strategy back then because of him, and I'm happy I take supplements regularly ever since then. I look and feel a lot younger than my peers, so grateful! 😊😘

When the upgrades to the human brain come in the 2030's, and later, won't those who can't afford it be massively disadvantaged? I know some will say that the benefits will trickle down but I still tend to think this will create an even larger gap between wealthy and the general population.
@dr.zoidberg8666
@dr.zoidberg8666 6 лет назад
Nah, in all liklihood, it'll work the other way. But the most important metric is the floor of poverty, not the distance between the poor & the rich. For instance, I wouldn't really care if there were trillionaires running around if my worst-case scenario was being able to afford rent in a 2-bedroom apartment, fast internet, a decent car, & plenty of food. The internet has been an extremely powerful tool for raising the floor of poverty in countries that have full access to its benefits (an umbrella that is widening every year), both because it gives access to new employment opportunities, but also because it gives access to new educational opportunities, & it makes previously unheard voices easy to hear. I suspect that direct brain-computer interfaces & brain augmentation will be a *much* more powerful tool. For instance, it's a very powerful, compelling experience to be able to see what life is like for someone living through hardship on the other side of the world from their own perspective thanks to RU-vid, but I think it would be a much more compelling experience to be able to literally experience other people's memories & feel their emotions thanks to direct brain-computer interfaces... & I can hardly imagine the jobs that will be made possible. There's a great saying that rich folks get premium access to this technology when it's expensive & doesn't work. Everyone else gets access to it when it's cheap & works very well. So don't worry too much. The track record for improved technology has typically been an improved life for everyone, not just the rich.

I'm sorry, but I can't take seriously anyone who calls Kurzweil "a great futurist" with an "accuracy rate of 86%" in predictions. I'll take a little time to more thoroughly explain what I mean in a minute, but let me broadly outline where I'm going. First, Kurzweil is an inventor and entrepreneur, which is significantly different than being a futurist. Second, I have yet to see a methodology by which anyone has verified the claims about prediction accuracy. Third, the claim that AI will make us more different from one another is unsupported. Finally, the idea of a "synthetic neocortex connected to the cloud" is a wish that may be thwarted in many ways and, in any case, is likely to be contrary to human survival in the long term. On the first point, Kurzweil has a great many patents and has been instrumental in developing a number of technologies that have changed our world significantly. He has created a number of companies that have produced products or technologies that are instrumental in today's world. These qualities make him an inventor and entrepreneur, but not a futurist. Futurists help people understand the wide range of possibilities existing out in time so they can make informed (if not always intelligent) choices about the futures they want to create. Furthermore, futurists DO NOT make predictions: we make assertions about what the future CAN be, but leave it to clients to decide what to make of the future. Kurzweil is clearly in the business of inventing things and selling them -- and his ideas behind them -- to others. He doesn't do many of the most important things that futurists actually do: critiquing the futures he projects; offering alternative futures based on the same trends (much less discussing alternative futures based on different trends that are at least equally plausible); advising others on the potential hurdles that must be overcome for his "predicted" futures to come true . . . . While he does appear to use some rudimentary techniques futurists have developed over the last seven decades -- trend extrapolation and backcasting -- these are not exclusively futurists' techniques. As an entrepreneur, he appears to apply them only to reaching the future he desires. As a writer for The Futurist said back in the 1990s, "Any hausfrau with an internet connection" can make such extrapolations. What Kurzweil does not address in the future he promotes is the fragmented nature of both past and present. We know that the past has been fragmented by social, economic, political, and geographic disparities; that these disparities created what we in the present can clearly see as multiple pasts; and that the present is fragmented into many different presents, depending on where you live, what your social status is, what your economic means are, and the degree of political power you have access to. All the available evidence, past and present, leads to the conclusion that our futures will be at least equally fragmented, leading to multiple alternative futures. Kurzweil doesn't acknowledge this in anything I've seen or read about him. That makes him a lousy futurist. The most important elements of the future -- recognition of multiple, unequal futures between which we have choices -- are wholly ignored. We are left bereft of the most important capability about the futures ahead: the ability to make informed choices about which futures to adopt. Kurzweil projects a singular, monolithic future to which we all will conform. That's horrible futures work! The second point is that there are many claims about the futures we face -- particularly technological futures. One common claim is that the rate of change is increasing, and Kurzweil's "futures" work seems to appeal to this argument. In many ways, it appears to have some credibility, yet I have yet to see anyone making this claim substantiate it with a methodology by which they verified the claim. How do you measure the rate of change? This is a critical question, as you can't legitimately claim that it's increasing if you can't establish what the "rate of change" is. I need to see how this rate of change is calculated and what data it's based on before I'll take it as valid. That said, prediction accuracy about the future is, in my best estimation, impossible to establish. First, we have yet to define what constitutes a "prediction" and how to quantify it. If we can't define what a prediction is well enough to quantify it, we can't assess an accuracy. Second, we have to establish what constitutes "accuracy" in a prediction. Is a prediction "accurate" if something like the event described occurs within six months of the predicted time? Is it accurate if the "prediction" occurs on time, but isn't exactly as specified in the original description? How close must we come to count, and how do we factor in deviation from the original specifications in computing accuracy? Considering that "predictions" about "The Singularity" have changed over time (I remember Kurzweil predicting that the singularity would have occurred by 2020 when I took my first futures studies courses in 1998), do we count such varying dates as separate predictions, or do we count them as adjustments to existing predictions? If we're going to make claims that someone has accurately predicted the future, we need to have a standard way of assessing such claims that is methodologically sound and backed by empirical data -- otherwise, we might as well read tea leaves and reflect upon Nostradamus' writings. On the third point, all indications thus far are that AIs are more likely to force us all into the same mold instead of enabling us to be different people. First, AIs are built around the mutually constructed social realities of the coders building them. Many (if not most) of these people share similar beliefs about what the human social world is and how it works. That means that a lot of unconscious biases, unquestioned assumptions, and untested hypotheses are being built into AIs, and social research into how people are being marginalized by AI systems is already showing this to be the case. There is no good reason to suggest that this will change any time in the foreseeable future -- that is, within the next ten to 50 years. A reasonable assertion is that those unconscious, untested assumptions will continue to operate within the AI systems we create unless we make conscious efforts to identify and eliminate them. However, since existing systems seem to work well enough for companies to make more money, it doesn't seem likely -- or profitable -- for developers and the companies that use AI systems to make the effort. When AIs get direct access to our brains, it becomes increasingly likely that they will insist that what they (the AIs) "think" is social reality actually IS reality, and that any attempt to introduce an alternative social reality is an attempt to escape the AI's assumptions. It is highly likely that, given direct access to our brains, AIs will attempt to impose their interpretations of social reality upon us. The last point, about having "synthetic neocortex[es] connected directly to the cloud", is what makes it more likely that The Singularity will impose itself upon us, but that's hardly the only way things can go wrong. There's still a lot we don't understand about how the brain stores and processes information. There's a lot we don't know about how to communicate information to a brain. There's a lot we don't know about how the hardware and software of such systems might interact with other parts of the brain in unanticipated ways. We may find that there are people whose brains are incompatible with the implanted hardware/software. And there are almost certainly going to be failures of the technologies along the way. Can we guarantee that the first person to get "chipped up" won't experience the dreaded "Microsoft Blue Screen of Death"? If they do, can we guarantee that it won't result in literal death? If so, how hard will the tech company sponsoring the trial work to cover up the malfunction? And if the failure is the result of inherent incompatibility between the subject and the chipset, who would be legally liable for this? Kurzweil doesn't even mention the possibility of these kinds of outcomes in anything I've seen or read: I only see a wholly unwarranted optimism about the technology, and little or no discussion of the legal, social and economic aspects of these technologies. Assuming all else went well, we don't know whether we would be able to operate independently of The Singularity were it to be disrupted. One only need look to how many people panic if they don't have access to their mobile phones to see that a disruption of AI connectivity could result in major problems for a society in which being constantly connected was a part of the everyday, commonsense knowledge that is our socially constructed reality. Once it's become established that instantaneous connectivity with AI is thought of as "how it's always been", losing that connectivity will become an existential threat to those who experience it. There are way too many issues for me to accept that the future of "The Singularity" is an all-or-nothing, inevitable future. It flies in the face of everything that foresight and futures studies tell us about how we create our collective futures. It defies the realities of technological innovation -- particularly on the adoption side, where individuals must choose whether to adopt a new technology. But most importantly, this presentation shows the dangers of an almost slavish devotion to the ideas of technological determinism and technological optimism and willingness to surrender all credibility to a brilliant inventor and entrepreneur promoting his agenda.

That's why I can't stand watching Ray Kurzweil, Peter Daimandis, or Isaac Arthur. NONE of them are futurists: they're entrepreneurs promoting their preferred futures without regard to how those futures might affect others. What real futurists do is help people understand what possibilities exist out in time so those people can make informed decisions about what THEY want the future to be. Diamandis, Kurzweil and Arthur all promote particular futures THEY think are desirable. They give you one choice: accept or reject the futures we offer. Supplimenting vitamin B12 (and vitamin D if you don't live in the equatorial regions) is all you really need to know to live well for longer by joining the movement to help yourself and the environment by turning to a exclusive whole food plant based diet. And the well understood practice of fasting (which would have happened to us a lot in ancient times) is actually the one of our bodies best cleansing abilities as it will effectively use every unessential fuel source in the body which includes cancerous cells. But fasting does require calm and support so the time do it needs to be earned, other than fasting keeping active is the winner.

Interesting interview. I haven't deep dived on Ray but the idea that it all goes well to the singularity is overly simplistic. If you look at the use of resources, power, and ability in mankind it tends towards corruption, misuse, and foolishness. Technology tends to be used for profit not benefit. Also if everyone lived even 10 years longer, how would that impact our resources use and society. The ripple effect of that would be huge and not in all good ways. The refreshing of death can also bring hope. Imagine if all the Hitler's and other powerful but wicked people could live 50 years more or even one year more. Near future predictions are one thing, but getting out 20 years is simplistic thinking at best. Thought provoking though. Great job as usual Tom.

Fascinating interview! I do notice, however, there seems to be a huge blind spot in many of these conversations about ultra-longevity or living forever: Habitat. The current 6th mass extinction event which is already underway, coupled with climate change.. it seems to me that anyone who wants to live forever, or live in ultra long life, should be focusing heavily on saving Earth’s habitat which humans depend on for life. 🙏🌎
@vanessavenkov6668
@vanessavenkov6668 6 лет назад
People seem to think that colonizing planets is the only way we can make space useful, but space is massive and its resources plentiful, we can build massive clusters of O'niel cylinders orbiting the sun, colonize other planets and moons ofc, orbital rings, etc so many things we can do to solve the habitat problem. I would recommend a channel that looks into these things with some real depth but is simple enough to understand immediately (Isaac Arthur). And in terms of Earth, global warming will be stopped by humans eventually, there are so many people working on that problem and with batteries and solar panels becoming more efficient we'll see hydrocarbon dependency drop over the next few decades significantly. We already know how to remove carbon from at atmosphere, it's just very expensive right now, but if money is invested in such technology, we may see it become much cheaper in the future, and we can make hydrocarbon from the atmosphere to use for plastic, instead of gathering more from the ground.

The point is to "upgrade" and be able to adapt to any environment. That is also the only way we'll be able to explore space and colonize.

Brandon Porter I love your optimism, though I think it is a tad unrealistic given the severity and complexity of the problem we are facing.. while Climate Change is clearly a massive problem- probably the single biggest issue facing humanity- it is still only one piece of the equation leading toward collapse. Keep in mind, that even if Climate Change were somehow taken out of the equation completely, we are still facing a mass extinction and habitat collapse unlike any since the dawn of mankind. Habitat destruction, pollution, pesticides, plastic in the oceans, these are all major contributors to collapse. Resource extraction usually also means habitat destruction... How many of earth’s resources will it take to be able to get to the point where we are mining enough asteroids in space to be able to sustain 8+ billion people at our current levels of consumption? How much more habitat and species will be lost in the process? Will there be anything left for future generations? Will there still be fish in the ocean? I ask these questions very seriously. While of course I support innovation and creative problem solving to mitigate and reverse the damage being done, it also seems clear to me that we need a massive draw down in resource extraction and consumption. It also seems clear, that we need to preserve as much natural habitat as possible, to give as many species a chance to survive as possible. I say that in the interest of humans, because we depend on the web of life to survive and thrive- but also in defense of all the other species who have not played a role in creating this challnge. It seems to me that is our duty. Personally, I am not particularly interested in living on a terraformed Mars, under some sort of biosphere dome.. I’d much rather live on earth under open skies breathing real air and being part of the web of life 🙏🌎

This should be shown as an example of good interview questions. Ray, see you in 2045 :)

Great interview. Tom Bilyeu asks the questions then lets Ray speak. He's not egotistical, with no interruptions and frivolous interjections like most interviewers who wish to make it about themselves.

The first interview where Tom didn’t use tons of expletives. Wonder why? Enjoyed very much.

Ray's eyes look sleepy or dozed off. Interestingly his voice and body movements appear very vivid.
