Can you please make a more in depth video about how much nail techs get paid vs. how much they spend throughout their career? Can you talk about the pros and cons about making money as a nail tech?

Thank you so much!! I'm 7 months in after getting my license and some days I feel like I'll never make any money doing this. Right now I make enough to pay my desk rent and replenish supplies but I wouldn't be able to do it if I was a single mom or if we didn't have my husbands income to pay our bills.

Thanks for making this video. I want to start nail school in September. I work from home now in customer service so I don't think it will be an issue for me to do both in the beginning as I buy the equiptment and build my clientele. I have invested my money in other small businesses as well in the past like (balloon business and event decor) but I always stopped because the money is so slow. And I also have a toddler which takes a Iot of my time. I want to know is it better working from home as a nail tech or working in a salon? Do you make more money at home or in a salon? I'm really wanting to start off working at home as a nail tech because of daycare fees that are so expensive and I do have a teenager in my home as well as my children father that will watch the baby while I work. Did you get clientele based on flyers and business cards or word of mouth? I was thinking of having people model my work by doing some people nails for free in the beginning.

Sorry, a lot of questions but I was wondering do you use gel nail polish or acrylic or fake nails often as a nail tech for your own nails? Do you ever wear normal nail polish when you're working as a nail tech? And whether you do wear normal nail polish or not, how do you remove nail polish that has gotten onto customers' skin when you're painting(and what u use to remove)? Like when u still can't paint well so it gets onto their skin around the nails. Because in the salon that I go to learn as a trainee, the employees use their own nails to dip(or something like that) into acetone and then remove the normal nail polish that's on the customers' skin. It's ok for them cuz they often use gel and sometimes fake nails when they do their own nails. But it's a problem for me cuz I think gel is expensive, I also heard some people say their nails are damaged after removing gel(also acrylic). So I always only use normal nail polish and when I try to remove nail polish that's on the customers' skin, my nail polish will also be removed. I asked my boss aka my teacher if I can use something else to remove like a stick or something, she said they use their nails. I also tried wearing their gloves, it doesn't work. I saw people on RU-vid using a wooden stick or some type of stick to remove nail polish on their skin so I don't get why she doesn't let me. Yeah, so it's kinda frustrating for me. That's why I decided to not paint nail polish on one nail so I'll just use that nail to remove. But I still wish I can use a stick. -_- Or maybe I should just find another job, lol. It's kinda sad and weird that people who are not nail techs can have longer lasting nail polish, they just use normal polish and my nail polish is ruined cuz of the acetone..and I'm a trainee at a nail salon.

J Holo - i always use a clean up brush, dipped in acetone for regular polish or alcohol for gel. My tried and true is from Alpha Brushes and it's called a french brush. I have 2 at my nail desk and one in my pedicure cart you just dip it in the acetone, dab off the excess so it doesn't run into the cuticle and damage the polish you've just put on, and then wipe away. If it's gel that's always been cured you'll have to file it off. The stick you're thinking of is an orange wood stick and honestly, just buy something and bring it in yourself. The owner sounds like she's cheap and cutting corners. I always always ALWAYS try to avoid using my fingernail because it looks tacky. I always have a hand done in acrylic and a hand in hard gel, one shaped into a ballerina and one into an oval so I can show people who ask what I can do. Neither gel nor acrylic will ruin your nails on their own, its the removal that destroys it. When you soak it off and scrape the product off you out fissures into the nail that allow the acetone and gel/acrylic sludge into the nail bed and bloodstream (info courtesy of the head chemist/owner at Light Elegance). Try to get a certification in e-file or use a hand file for removal and your clients will be happy. If you don't know what you're doing with an e-file stick to soak off and then buff the product off with a hand file instead of scraping. You can do a LOT of damage if you don't use the e file properly. Good luck!

Joshua Stephens I’m 24, and work part time at a restaurant, granted i don’t really have a back up plan, but i know i don’t want to be in food service forever. I want to do something I’m really passionate about. (I don’t want to do something and then dislike it, and be stuck in for it forever) but i love doing nails. People have told me since i love doing it so much, i should think about it. I’ve honestly thought about being a nail technician, maybe owning my own shop one day? (But I’m scared of failure.) i know i don’t want anybody above me in the end, but I’m willing to put the time and dedication in it for things to work out. I say do it. You should go for it ❤️

Doing nails is hard on your body and unless you make sure and get the correct chair sit at the right height it can do a lot of damage. So research everything before you start and talk to long time techs they are the most knowledgeable in the industry. People in it for a few years can’t know the things we longtime techs know. Good luck

What about the long term effects of being exposed to nail polish/acetone/other chemicals. You can wear the surgeons masks (if that's what they're called) but they don't completely protect you, do you know how someone was exposed for years or decades to it state's of health was after that time?

So nail techs don't get paid an hourly wage? You talked about buying your own supplies. When I would go to the salon, they have the polish every tech can use. Can you explain how techs get paid? Thanks!
@christinamatzen4214
@christinamatzen4214 6 лет назад
Chicago Gyrl - it depends on the salon you're at. I'm an independent contractor so I buy and use all my own products and pay rent for my desk. The salon owner already had an established set of polishes and our clients all can choose from it but any new polishes we all share the cost on. We all take turns bringing in paper towels and such but I'm in charge of my own disinfectant and all other supplies. I set my prices and I decide what services I provide. You can work in a salon where you are an employee and you are given an hourly salary and it's in your contract if you keep your tips or pool them because someone else polishes after you do the fill or whatever. In California you can get your necessary hours either by going to an accredited school or by being an apprentice in a salon that has 4 or more employees. There's also a kind of hybrid where you are paid commission, like the owner brings in the clients and dishes them out to the techs and takes a percentage of the service. I hope this helps! Also. I'm in California so some states may have different rules with regards to commissions and such.
