I love that people recognize how close Arcanism is to Creation Magic, but I feel like there's more of a link than the simple coalescence of aether into various forms. Arcanism is all about the shapes and geometries of aether into spells, right? From the spells that many ancients (and other) characters have cast, there are often nonstandard markers with recognizable shapes for similarly recognizable effects. I just gotta point that out, that the basics of Arcanism feel like they might be rooted a bit deeper into the essentials of magic than we think, and that Creation Magic could be Arcanism's greater form. Just imagine creating those various geometries. I dunno. Maybe I'm a bit high rn.
I think you might be onto something tbh. Especially with the concept of summoning carbuncles and egi's being literally the arcanist/summoner creating life forms out of aether based around the concept the caster has formed in their head, which is very similar to how creation magic were described as being entirely based around the caster having a solid understaniding and mental image of their creation at the time.
Red Mage my beloved. Back when I was first starting out in FFXIV, none of the starter jobs particularly interested me that much; and the one job that very much did, Dark Knight, was locked behind the gates of Ishgard. I had heard the stories of how good the class quests for DRK were, but I found myself struggling to become invested even as I made my way through ARR. There we enjoyable moments to be sure, but none of the jobs I had fumbled through had truly grabbed me. Monk, Dragoon, White Mage... I struggled to find anything that "clicked." Then, after reaching level 50, I noticed a few new jobs that had opened up to me. Whilst Samurai, a Melee DPS was certainly interesting... I had no idea what Red Mage was beforehand. And upon seeing X'rhun perform the job's *Melee combo* and what not, I was absolutely hooked. Red Mage encouraged me to thrive and experience the game through a brand new lens as I progressed through ARR's post patch content; and gave me the foundation I needed to continue towards Dark Knight. And as one who has now been through the journey, I am happy to say I still adore the job to this day. A guardian of Etheirys, Red and true.
Well I was a summoner and have always felt it was the go-to for A Realm Reborn. It tied itself very well to main storyline because to get your next power up you needed beat the next primal. Though I will admit when they stopped doing Job Quests and moved to Class Quest Summoner was one of the classes that suffered from it because the New Abilities granted in Shadowbringers was Phoenix which is a very Lore heavy.
You mean when they moved from Job Quests to Role Quests, right? Role Quests aren't exactly class bound just role bound (Tank, Melee DPS, Phys. Ranged DPS, Magical Ranged DPS, and Healer.) And you can still see the lore for Phoenix in the Bahamut raid series quests. It's just that most people skip them until they can solo them.

But I was more talking about how PC and the Twins weren't supposed to talk about Phoenix and summoning Phoenix is what you got in Shadowbringers so there's a story there and this continues into Endwalker as you can summon Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda so there another story not being told there.
I feel like if they just added more summonable primals for summoner (like Leviathan, His Majesty the King, Ramuh, Odin and Shiva for example...) It could improve the jobs complexity by forcing you to pick which primals you want to summon in a rotation window. Maybe give a buff for each primal that sticks around for a bit making the summon order an important consideration.
I just love how alliteration can be when used well. Also the fact you are a Red Mage proves you have both the martial and mental skill for magic and blades. Already a fearsome combo. To wit; brains and brawn.
It's always funny to me that while I imagine my WoL to be a warm and gentle character (Think Yuna from FFX), their chosen job is the Black Mage. Their personality befits a White Mage more, yet they chose the path of destruction. It's a contradiction I don't have the answer for yet. (And to make it even more confusing, they're always dressed in red like a Red Mage)
Maybe theyre a black mage who takes the lessons learned from Mach's failures VERY seriously lol. Maybe their gentle temperament makes them the perfect individual to trust with it's secret, since theyre the least likely to abuse it?After all, the players soul crystal IS Shatoto's. That is a powerful relic to entrust to someone, the memories and arts of the first and truest black mage. Edit: Maybe they could don the red as a way of signaling to other cqsters who may recognize their art for what it is that even though they dont carry a blade they still take balance seriously. As for the colour scheme, though it's not intentional on their part (They just like the colour red), it's a fitting bit of symbolism. I think the gentle personality coupled with studying the most destructive magic school is somewhat fitting. Sometimes the best way to protect those who need protecting is to absolutely destroy anything that might threaten them before they have a chance to hurt people. Plus, there is an old saying, "a wise person fears 3 things above all else. The ocean in a storm, a moonless night, and the anger of a kind man."
To be fair: Black mage start as a Thraumaturge. And there thing is, to simply attack the enemy with the aether from your own body. Its not differently to a sword or spear. Its neutral power. Only the people of the guild looks a little desillusionated, with there "the dark arts", "the abyss" and what ever darkness themed they talked about. And Black magic is the naturaly evolution, by adding the aether around you to your own power (even, when it is easier sayed, as to did it, when whe look to the 50-60er blm quest). Black mages did nothing differently, as any other fighter^^
Black mage here and I'm so glad you finally got to us. Though now that you have finished up I have a question. At the beggining of the game you are chatting with a merchant on the way to your starting city. He asks you why you became an adventerer. Between the answer you give him and the class you start out as, what does that say about your WoL? Not as they are now but who they were at the beginning of there journey?
If you'll remember, during one of the ARR Patch Quests, during an escort mission, you're asked that question once again, this time by a small boy. That's my favorite cutscene in the entire game, because it's in that one moment that you realize how far you have come. From just a simple sprout adventurer hailing the gates of your chosen starting city, to the Champion of Eorzea, and the many more adventures to come after that. Did your answer change? Because mine sure did :)

I've always liked the idea of a spellcasting hero that isn't just raw arcane might, but balances that with flexibility, quick wit and no aversion to getting in close if the situation needs for them to. The idea of the Red Mage being a fencer who can cast magic like the best of them fit the bill for that gameplay-wise
I main SMN when i play dps because it feels powerful and since the Ancients were so interesting, i'm proud to continue their legacy by using creation magic
A short summation of Blue mages: You took all the magic classes in the game, learned their trades, studied their philosophies... and then spat in their eyes, and declared that you'd do it yourself. Your path is of the laughing clown that mocks all else- everything's a performance, and everybody else, the fool. They think themselves so much more important than they truly are- and you make no mistake, you ARE a fool too! But you're one who KNOWS that you're a fool- and doesn't that difference make all the change in the world? Whatever they struggle with, whatever they strive against, you see them triumph through blood, sweat, and tears... and then, you turn around, and instantly kill whatever was causing them such trouble, burning it down in a hail of missiles or freezing it solid and shattering it with a smile. But beware your power, blue mage- because if you laugh everybody else off the stage... You will find that you are performing all alone.
As a Red Mage main,I absolutely love the lore of the Job and the "guardian" angle said lore gives it. An elegant protector that blinds friend and foe alike with their power! (And also their LB3)
My WOL began as a Black Mage. Following the near-destruction of his home after the Calamity, he discovered he has a naturally high aetheric reserve, and so went out adventuring to use his strength to help others; as well as proving those at home wrong that his weaker body COULD be an adventurer like his father. However, after defeating Nidhogg again, Ryuji felt that, despite his magicks being strong, he couldn't control it as well as he would've liked, so he picked up the way of the Dancer to liberate Ala Mhigo and Doma, and save the First so he could improve his ability to manipulate his enormous amounts of aether. And when the Telophoroi appears, he feels confident enough in his control over aether to pick up spellcasting again, and became a Summoner to counter the growing Lunar Primal threat with Primals of his own.
SMN has been my go-to main for Caster since Endwalker came out and this video just cements my reasoning why. For my own little headcanon, I was comparing Summoner with the Onmyouji of Japan, how their general schtick was exorcising, binding, and summoning various spirits, yokai... and even gods/kami. The fact the Onmyouji-themed enemies in FFXIV use books as their weapon like SMN (and SCH, I guess), have a penchant for summoning other monsters, and even have their own version of the Ruin spell (and a version of AST's Gravity spell), this just makes it fit so much more. I didn't really use SMN much before it became a pure Burst Damage Job, but the lore stuff here just cements why I chose SMN as my primary main Job.
Additional note with RDM, at some point, an Elezen (pretty sure from Ishgard) brought in the swordfighting techniques into the circle, which is why the melee attacks are French themed.
SMN in FFXIV is and has been always my favorite!!! Now that’ve played FFXVI, Clive made me feel like I was my SMN from 14, but dialed up to 100! I felt like I was going the route Yoshi-P wanted in Endwalker with our rework!
I think looking at the lore for RDM - it also explains why vercure is as potent as it is. (Even after they blind us 😂) But I’ll always be a SMN main cause carbuncles. They’re the cutest! Even in the lore I have for her, SMN is her job at heart.
I've always been interested in the history of Mhach and the Magi (which was why I found the Void Ark raid series fascinating from a lore standpoint, and just ate up all of the information), so I suppose it only makes sense that my main is a Red Mage. I never liked the flashy RDM stuff which was introduced (and quickly glam'd over the somewhat gaudy outfits), but definitely can see my WoL as someone who followed the first Red Words made from WHMs and BLMs who put aside their differences and resolved to try and aid the realm. My first class/job was CNJ/WHM, in fact, and I still keep a healer's mindset when I go into raids and dungeons. If a party/alliance member goes down and I'm not in the middle of my melee combo, I'll get them up. Even if I was just rezzed and had to wait a couple seconds to get the MP back, if I know a mechanic requiring more people is coming up or if a healer goes down then I'll gladly use what little MP I have (even if Lucid is on cd) to lift the strain from the healers. ...unless the boss is below 3% health. In that case, I prioritize dps. I'm perfectly fine with not being the "top deeps", and my WoL would be like that as well. First healing job was WHM, and first tanking job was PLD. My WoL would definitely fit a "guardian" role looking more for compromise and camaraderie over war and destruction...yet understands that sometimes, more than just words is needed to resolve a conflict.
There's one thing that you didn't mention about Red Mage and what it says about your WoL/Player. If you main RDM, you absolutely have made an informed decision to trade BIG NUMBER GO BRR for MAN I LOOK GOOD.
I love RDM so much, and my WoL is an avid follower of the Crimson Word, seeking to find balance in the world, but she also believes that she can become a good WHM due to knowing how to manage the aether around her and within her.

Glad to see this video finally get made! Was waiting to see the potential lore implications of the magic jobs, and I think your interpretations were all spot-on! This actually makes me wonder; what job do you think best fits the "casual" kind of player? I.e., the kind of player/WoL that is... relaxed, willing to go with the flow, and plays the game/adventures more for the fun of it rather than any sort of duty; which job do you think best fits that?
I know your question is posed to Scribe directly, but as a fellow lore nerd who enjoys these conversations i wanna chime in. I think Bard would suit a relaxed player and WoL both. Bards often play support from the back and handle things as they come to them, in the lore the songs they play can either envigorate or ease the living, and can lay the souls of the deceased to rest. That somber, wandering minstrel vibe i think suits a relaxed person perfectly.

The jobs of 14, and the lore from the series and 14's own, really just gets me thinking of; Like an Adventure Job Class, or just an animation of the WoL pulling out all stops Dances around Black Magic leylines, to dash in with Red Magic rapier, to then bring down Ifirt hell
I centered my MSQ experience around AST, SCH, and SMN, and in my heart the scions remember I spent a lot of the MSQ quests as a summoner. But then when Y'shtola in 6.0 started explaining how summoning magic worked to me... my poor heart.
BLM is my favorite Final Fantasy job. I have the OG sprite tattooed on my side... That said, I can't stand how it plays in FFXIV. I've tried so many times to get into it and it always just ends in frustration/annoyance for one reason or another. I do really like the *foundation* of the new SMN. Right now it's a bit too bare bones but there's definitely a lot more room to build upon it in the future compared to pre-EW. On the topic of lore, when I think about my WoL and what their default "canon" job would be, it's definitely SMN for a couple reasons. It fits so perfectly with our character's journey and being such a rare job it makes us feel more unique. One of the silly quirks with me when I'm doing MSQ is I don't like being the same job as the mainline Scions. Side Note: I'm still bummed that we've yet to see Meteor be any kind of caster. Outside of the original trailer where he's an ARC, he's always either a tank or melee DPS.
He is DEFINITELY not a mage. Not in any of all the trailers in any expansion has he been shown to even use magic or any kind. He’s has been shown as an archer (not a bard) in the 1.0 and 5.0 trailers, a WAR in 2.0, 3.0 and 5.0 trailers, a DRG in 3.0 and 5.0 trailers, a SAM in 4.0 and 5.0 trailers, a MNK in 4.0 and 5.0 trailers, a DRK in the 5.0 trailer (the single time he ever uses any kind of magic attack with his purple fire thingy), a PLD in the 6.0 trailer (where he limits himself to swinging his sword), and even now in the 7.0 teaser he’s the new melee DPS class and doesn’t do anything other than swing a sword. So, if we see that he has only ever used physical classes and even in those classes he has only ever casted a magic attack ONCE in all the trailers, it is very safe to assume he is certainly NOT a mage of ANY kind.
Black mage. The only logical choice as a magic user.^^ As a caster will you never be as good in close combat, as the knight classes. Not as much durable or fast or strong. You will even never be able to attack as fast, as a Bowmen or gunner. What caster has is power. And black magic is the best at raising your power and beat the enemy with as short attacks, as possible. With "luck", are whe even so powerfull, that whe will destroy the planet. Like, with the 6. calamity.^^ And, they have some fancy outfits to wear.^^
I like to think there isn't one WoL. I know this is headcanon and probably wrong but i feel like Heavensward and Endwalker are the same protagonist but storm blood is monk and shadow bringers is dark knight.
i like how rdm also aligns somewhat with paladin in its valor as a guardian and limited spellcasting and swordplay personally my third pick after my mains pld and sch
I've always found it fitting that my WoL is a red mage, because who better to restore balance to shards tipped in excess to one element than a warrior trained in the art of keeping and protecting balance and harmony? Preventing calamities may as well be their job.
I would consider myself a Reaper main, but lately I've been enjoying the casters a lot. Can't wait to the addition of the new one, with even more lore to learn about!
I make a point of asking RDM to take the LB3 in Porta when the time comes -- it doesn't matter which DPS does the LB3 (and in fact it's often not even necessary for any LB3 to drop, to thwart Ultima the Second), and Vermillion Scourge is one of the prettiest LB3 animations out there. Something about the black and white magic logos rotating into place over the caster, and then echoed on the target area, makes it superb to me. My main is RDM because it can save a party's bacon when the healers and tanks are down -- mainly because its low DPS gives a few extra seconds to cast those crucial Verraises/Vercures to wake up the folks necessary to continuing the duty run! Yes, I'm saying RDM's low DPS in comparison to melee DPS and other caster DPS is actually a boon if stuff goes way way sideways.
While I was happy overall with the changes to Smn, I truly wish that SE had kept Carby auto-attacking. It doesn’t have to do much damage. Just auto attack with the occasional little flourish spell that does slightly more damage every so often depending upon the variant. That’s all I want Yoshi P, that’s all I want-except for female Hrothgar of course. I used to main Smn for solo content and do Sch for group content but then I tried Whm, Ast and Rdm. And fell in love with Rdm which is now my main. For some reason the job just clicked with me. And being a DDer is giving me time to look and learn the boss mechanics rather than becoming fixated on the health bars. I’m hoping that eventually it’ll make me a better healer too. I’m working on Drg and Gbr to experience melee dps and tanking-a bit nervous about learning to tank as I’m a poor navigator. Then maybe Dnc, Nin or Brd to try out melee ranged.
My main is a Red Mage as a 'side job' to her primary Dark Knight, and since in the head cannon of my characters my main is the only one of the lot that is the WoL of the story. Kinda already doing 'Red Mage' things, both schools of though, before she ever got the stone. So for her the reason she picked up Red Mage is two fold, and neither has to do with Red Mage lore in FF14. First is it's general versatility. Secondly, everyone kinda knows 'the WoL is a Dark Knight Miqote', least those who know the WoL. So it lets her wander around and do Adventurer things 'incognito' so to speak. My Primary alt is a Black Mage. one highly gifted in the Arcane arts to. if she was in DnD, Sorcerer is what she'd be with out question, for context as to what you should be thinking with this character. Now her mentality towards studying magecraft aside (IE it comes so naturally its hard for her to stay interested in keeping up with her studies for the short of it) when she is out adventurering, she is 100% a Black Mage. Moves very little, and turns anything dumb enough to start anything with her or her group a smoking hole in the ground. Ironically, her talent, mixed with her personality naturally keeps her grounded, since one major character trait of hers is not being a fan of 'unearned power', and in her mind, her raw talent with magecraft qualifies as such

That's the point. They're NOT summoning the real primals. They're conjuring a brief representation of their power, and since they exist only for a moment it doesn't hurt anything except for the people being attacked. lol
@SynodicScribe oh and do elements have effects? In the game, when you throw fire, the enemies take it and don't turn to ash. It leaves me questioning if elements in the final fantasy world are like unaspected magic?
@@lushdontu4015 That's actually a limitation of the video game. Fire still burns, water soaks and wind buffets. The developers simply didn't give the elements in game any special distinctions so we never see that represented in game.
I've commented on my favorite jobs in previous videos, but my absolute main is Black Mage. I like how instead of a one-two-three combo like some other jobs, it has a library of spells that you can find synergy between. I feel like an arcane scholar when I sit down with my spellbook open (reading the tooltips in my actions menu) theorycrafting when to use what and mastering my rotation until I'm thinking about it in my sleep and suddenly sit upright in my bed saying "Holy crap, if I cast these spells in this order while carrying a Ether potion, I could cast Flare four times in a row! ...It would be too impractical for standard combat, but I could!" (Not to say there aren't other jobs that are also like this in some way.)
I do miss when Carbuncle could auto attack. As a former summoner main I still long for more carbies as glamour and egis. I dropped summoner as my main when Stormblood came out but it and Red Mage are jobs I love to play.
Fantastic content as always! Ive been looking forward tl this one. I feel so called out in the segment about carbuncle doing nothing lmao! Im definitely someone that has harassed you about this many times in the past. As far as Blue Mage goes, i just want to say i wish it could be used in pvp. Every other job has a special pvp only hotbar, i dont see why BLU cant do the same.
I feel like there was a missed opportunity to mention the summoner's relationship with primals, that being their initial purpose of being specifically primal hunters.
i enjoyed this, hope you continue for the other roles. I main Astro due to their visual and job gear. and that they may actually be the most powerful magic users :P

as i remember and understand the lore of Summoner, the only reason we cannot summon whatever primal-egi we wish, and thensome is an out of game explanation. Squeenix balancing team saying no. (why can we not get more egis for pet glam?)
No, there's a specific explanation. You are drawing out and sort of "stamping" part of your aether when you perform the egi-creation ritual and then defeat that egi. As a result, even the WoL's prodigious font of aether isn't enough to hold more than three "normal" egis. However, Dreadwyrm Trance and Demi-Bahamut (and, likewise, Firebird Trance and Demi-Phoenix) are a way to skirt around that restriction, a _temporary_ egi rather than a permanent one. The problem is, with the recent SMN rework...you never HAVE any permanent egis (or, I guess, you have no more than _one_ permanent, and completely superfluous, egi). So that explanation, while still completely canon (it's part of the cutscenes, and Square does as much as possible to NEVER change cutscenes...even when they're no longer correct), doesn't actually reflect how SMN works anymore. So....it is a reason canonically, and out of game the reason is they can't keep making a zillion egis, but _mechanically_ the reason is incorrect. This wouldn't be so jarring, except that FFXIV is known for an extremely high degree of gameplay and story integration. Limit Breaks, the Echo, glamours...all of this and more are explicitly part of the world and used for important plot points. So having something that _used to_ tie mechanical limitations into the lore...and now completely breaks that connection...is a real problem.
@@ZekeRaiden the confirmed egis that we cannot summon for one reason or another, Ramuh-Egi, Sephirot-Egi and Belias-Egi. and with obsidian/moonstone carbuncle from Alphinaud, and the diamond carbuncle from Ulan (Anima Relic series). so its just a strange case of, we know they exist; we choose not to use them because like why the Blue Mage isn't a normal job, the workload would ruin the lives of the devs to have a full elemental suite of egis.
I play what I refer to as the Purple Mage. Which is based off of my favorite job combination from FFV: Playing as a Red Mage but adding on the versatile spells of the Blue Mage for most encounters. Which if you're willing to put the work in for that, Blue magic has a lot of small, but potent, uses in that game. Even now I gave my own BLU a spiffy purple glam to reference that. That aside, while crisscrossing classes is not a part of XIV, I like to imagine that in my own WoL's case, he doesn't see the drawbacks of RDM as being a negative, he sees it as a necessity to hone his power *as* the WoL to a razor's edge, to cut so precisely yet so deeply that it's sharper than the rapier he wields. Game mechanics and *numbers go 'brrrr'* aside, I picture my WoL's status as a Red Mage to extend beyond the limits of a few Vercures and the occasional melee combo and Verexplosion and be more akin to the Red Mages of other FF games such as FFV, having free reign to use any spell, albeit in a lesser form, that any of the other jobs have access to. Again obviously this doesn't reflect in-game, which is fine tbh. But he isn't just winning by chance or even by the Scions, but by sheer, unbridled tenacity and ability to react to damn nearly any situation, weaving spells and rapier swings with insane precision and power alike, overcoming foes alone that whole groups could not; but also add in others and suddenly facing down the armies of Garlemald, the Flood of Light, or the End Times all seem to be just another day at the office at that point. Because at the end of the day, he wasn't seeking to be flashy, he was seeking to stop the bad guys from winning. If the price paid is that he isn't out there doing big, bombastic moves or having a huge presence on the battlefield, he's out there making sure that we win, not that everyone sees how amazing he is. The reason being that I always pictured my WoL being rather humble about his deeds, though not a total pushover; he *wants* his rewards for saving the world, and he'll make sure he gets em (and yes, a free island is a decent reward to him).
Me personally, I loathe the memes. What a callous and cynical way to reduce a job's role and utility to the lowest possible common denominator. Plus, people aren't half as funny as they think they are. 🙄
I absolutely still love Summoner for its lore, even if I find its current incarnation, as you say, horribly devoid of the charm it used to have. But the lore...it's still so good. The connections to Bahamut, to Allag, and to the Ancients and Creation magic can't be ignored. I agree with other commenters, that I think the connections seem to go even deeper than you explicitly went into here. I like to think that my WoL has become such a successful Summoner in part because it has brought him closer to who Azem was, long ago. Memories, or perhaps _intuitions_ and _reflexes,_ that no amount of time could completely erase.
_god_ square did summoner dirty with the rework. like that's just like. it. that's the only reason I moved to RDM and melee dps. I'd still be a SMN if it was still a complicated bigbrain job for people who like being overwhelmed and having no idea what the f#ck they're doing and doing a lot of different things.
I personally I am saddened by the summoner change. I miss have total control over my pets/summon. After the changes in SB for scholar, I fell in just being a summoner. Then with the last expansion. I stop play for months, probably did start playing again until they fix the mass server log in situation. I went through many mage jobs, till I land on red mage. I like complexity and utility. It why I started out as an arcanist. With the changes to summoner, I feel like it the squishes mage. Since your summons can no long take damage. Not as powerful as black, but lacks healing strength that is found in white and red mage.
I didn't say how big the boss's hp was. I said I cast [Fire 3] May I say that 90% of the reason I wound up modding in Viera hats was because I wanted my official Black mage appearance damnit?
Black mage is strong but you actually have to be good at the job, good at mechanics, and plan ahead for the fight to know where to optimally use leylines/instacasts. BLM has the highest skill ceiling. A bad BLM on the other other hand will contribute little damage And zero party utility. That’s why the Average dps for BLMs varies widely because the bad BLMs will greatly bring it down while the good ones output massive dps. The only other job somewhat like this is MNK. Yoshi P has dumbed down just about every other job to the point where the skill ceiling and the skill floor are touching eachother.
Summoner was so much better and final fantasy 11, you would actually summon just a single summon and it would fight with you. It had its own limit break and its own unique abilities and elemental damages.

@@raielle I know right? Even collecting the weather conditions for your Carbuncle felt like a weird kind of achievement. You don't see challenges like that in MMO's anymore with people wanting to be OP without putting in the effort. =/
@@SynodicScribe Indeed... As much as I like a lot of the QOL and visual improvements of 14, there's a lot i miss from 11, including the sense of achievement you got from most things. In some ways it went too far but for the most part i liked it. Then again I'm someone who mained DRG since CoP and eventually got Gungnir mid WoTG. Closest things we have to these are the ARR sightseeing logs, higher end trials, and Eureka. The irony being the same people who want to be OP without the effort will then say the game is boring due to lack of challenges.
