"If your favorite is the helmet, you either have brain damage because you were shot in the head and survived, or you were born that way. No shame in either."
The worst thing is that I'm pretty sure they didn't even keep the color schemes of those who genuinely had to EARN their berets exclusive to their respective types of troops. Imagine busting your balls to earn that thing and then some private who doesn't even know how to was one properly walks by you like "man fuck this thing, it's itchy"
We used balaclavas at fort wainwright, folded into a beanie when it turned ECWCS season. We never ever got to wear the fleece cap, except maybe in the field sometimes. Even when doing pt it was balaclava.
Seen a CW-5 for 0.2 seconds while in a formation in AIT. His rank reflected off the sun and shined in my eye. Most amazing and rare thing to see in the army
Had a CW4 as an interim company commander once... even then he'd have the XO or one of the PL's hold the formation... but was probably one of the most chill CO's I've even had
even a marine knows the fleece beanie is goated. for those chilly 02-06 firewatch patrols. or perhaps pooping on top of a rocky desert mountain and writing to a journal how watching the sunrise, while the wind blew strong, and my twig and berries dangled in a hole in the ground, i found peace and glory. i’d do anything to go back
MikeBurnFire said it best “I fucking hated the black Berets. Some stupid army general was probably walking around the pentagon and saw some marines or special forces with berets and thought I want those too”
That's pretty much it, though. Shinseki straight up said that the reason for the adoption of the beret was that other militaries had them for general use, so why shouldn't we?
@@Nerdsammich I refer back to “MikeBurnFire” because they are “stupid, and hot” 😅😅 his rant is pretty solid as he describes everything from “shaving” your beret to forming it….which no one agreed upon and he had to have two depending on who was at formation.
@@williambigbills-9665 Yeah, they're the worst. I was just confirming the quoted supposition with the stated reasoning given by Gen Shinseki at the time.
same, and if I need more than the fleece cap, I have an Air Force aviator shell cap I got from my dad that fits perfectly over the fleece. It's like a woobie for my head
This is a prime example of how Americans tend to overdo regulations. You need permission to wear a damn cap? Oh my godddd🙄 Let me guess, it's suppose to instill discipline and uniformity right? Of course.... Except the only problem with that is there's plenty of other ways to instill those same things without being ridiculous about it
I wasn't enlisted during beret time but my first unit (11 ACR) was allowed to wear them for a few years during Vietnam. I'm not sure of the story behind that. The only time we could wear the wool cap outside of PT was in the motor pool. You always kept one really good patrol cap for guard duty and it was starched/sized and blocked. The ones for the regular duty day I washed 3-4 times without wearing, rolled them up and let them dry. The only other headgear we were authorized to wear was your Cavalry Stetson if you earned your spurs as we didn't have a regimental event for the dress cap unless you were an officer.
As an old soldier I always loved the Overseas (i.e., Cunt Cap) especially since I was Airborne! The Overseas Cap with 'Glider Patch' was ALWAYS my favorite!
A piece of headgear forgotten by most was the winter pile cap with earflaps. Cold weather helmet liner was correct nomenclature. Looked like a Russian but who cares when your ears are toasty in W Germany.
How about the old bdu boonie caps? Those were badass and if you got the chance to "acquire" one when leaving you will wear it outside of service as well. Whether its the old green bdu boonie or the desert bdu boonie
I had an OD Green boonie cap for Cadet FTX abroad. Lost it sometime in junior year and couldn’t figure how I lost it. During senior year FTX I found it…in my company commander’s possession. Never did get it back.
Bro I got something to tell you, obviously we blame the Mrs that our old military kit has shrunk, but 👀 guess what bro, its not the uniform that's shrunk 👀 erm......... Yea.
@@kujokage4611 how the fuck did that happen bro. Since I left I put weight on looking at food 😭😂 I'd still fit into it but I'd look like them kids on them stolen valour videos who's kit is a bit too tight 🤣😭
OK, another Cadet from a long distant past. I was a cadet in the late 1970's and was in CAP until I went active duty. In those days we wore the old OD's with the OD baseball cap. Until I went to the Blue Beret encampment.
I actually enjoyed it. Its where all the orose of uniform went for me, especially with ACU when i served. You always knew who took the time to make them fit well
@@sassythesasquatch8036 you can still have all the traditions of being Cav. Which is exactly why I turned down every spur ride and never wore my Stetson.
@@sassythesasquatch8036 you can still wear a stetson. Anyone in a Cav Squadron can wear one. The Cav Squadron that was my 1st unit was probably the most welcoming unit I've ever been in. Being able to wear a stetson and spurs even if you weren't a 19d/19a made for a very tight knit unit. Unless you were a turd of a soldier.
I was stationed up in Alaska. Fleece cap was definitely my head gear of choice, when it was allowed. Neck gators and baklava was the main thing we wore in winters. Now that's the cold weather goat.
I think the U.S. Army should make the tan fleece cap the primary winter headgear and worn between the dates of 1 October to 1 April. They should have the rank Velcro on the front and have the name tape sewn in the back, similar to the patrol cap. The same rule applies to the black PT fleece cap
Oh yeah. We just want to keep dishonoring our Ranger Regiments. 🖕 They were forced to endure one theft of a unit symbol of pride and tradition, and you think it's a good idea to force them to give up that new beret to all the douche bags who haven't earned that level. Civilians just clearly do not understand their military any longer.
Everything this man says is indisputable and also incredibly astute. The only thing he failed to address is the non-rangers “ranger rolling” their PCs. Oh and something about how if you wear your ACH everywhere then just… 🤦♂️ … is all there is to say
Army Captain from CO “Excuse me airman you can only wear your fleece can during cold weather periods” 5th year SrA “Sir it 62 degrees and I’m from Alabama. This is cold weather.”
I am an 8 year Army veteran. My favorite headgear was the patrol cap. 41 years after ETS, I still have mine. It's a bit ragged, but still wears fine. That beret was the worst uniform idea EVER. Except for the Space Force dress uniform.
Ngl I’m not even in the force and he called me out for wanting to wear the Service cap. I went to a School with a Navy JROTC so whe the Top brass dressed out and had on their full Navy Uniforms with the Service Cap? That shit was clean. Now I see the error in my ways
Beanies are best, berets looked pretty damn cool when worn properly and they fold so easily into any pocket. Pc was best for getting smoked. Caught all the brow sweat
Fun fact, The Patrol Cap is the lowest of the low in the British Army. It was previously worn by recruits in basic training and called a crap hat or crow cap as you had to earn your Regimental headdress.
I only ever wore the O.D.Green ball cap and the pile cap in the Winter ...Never even wore My Class 1 uniforms ....Cav wasn't exactly by the book Army ....
He forgot the cowboys in the 1st Calvary Division, they NEVER left 1860. Join us in 2023 someday. The Arctic Angels should be allowed to wear a black wool beanie with spit-shinned jumpers to symbolize ''we patrol the darn cold area in Santa Claus' North Pole'', LOL (Seriously the Marines have branded themselves to Christmas with the Toys for Tots and Christmas Parades. The Army should step up with the 11th Airborne Division Angels.)
Spc Todd Treadwell December 1992...... Showed up for a class A inspection with the service cap while everyone else had on the regular garrison cap What a tool
Why the fuck yall got so many hats? The navy has like 4. A command ball cap A garrison cover A combination cover (E7+) And the ever iconic dixie cup (E1-E6)
