Man The way the last words of a shooting star just says “please be safe” Is the most gentle thing to me I always listen to that song when I feel empty and hopeless so if someone also loves that song know that you are not alone You are loved and you are worthy Stay safe and love the little things in life
I don’t agree with a lot of these interpretations. A Pearl is about trauma making you hard to deal with in a relationship, not about an ex (“I felt in love with a war, and nobody told me it ended”)

For yone who's jam is A Pearl and feels a little unseen: A Pearl is literally about PTSD. Pearls are formed when foreign objects make their way into oysters, the oyster protects itself by covering the thing in thin layers of a mucus like substance, and continues to cover it until its smooth and no longer a threat. The substance hardens, and that's what a pearl is. "You're growing tired of me/you love me so hard and I still can't sleep" : no amount of any external force or pressure will make you ready to open up about hard things, it's something you have to grow into. It's never going to be easy, but getting help is always worth it. Sometimes even the people you love most aren't easy to talk to. You can't love or be loved out of depression or trauma. "You're growing tired of me/and all the things i don't talk about" : it's easy to be frustrated with someone when you don't know why they do the "weird" things they do, like checking doors and locks, or asking for validation often. "Sorry I don't want your touch/it's not that I don't want you" : this feels pretty self explanatory? Being aware of your triggers or possible triggers and respecting the boundaries you create is a huge step towards recovery. As is being clear with why it's a boundary, so you aren't hurting others in the process. "Sorry I can't take your touch" : in this line, it's not "I don't want it" it's "I can't *handle* it". In this case, whatever form of touch is being referenced here isn't a possible trigger. It *is* one, and it's upsetting being in the middle ground between wanting human interaction and intimacy while also being afraid of or affected by contact. Being sex repulsed or not liking being touched in general while being touch starved is hell "I fell in love with a war" : getting used to a bad situation, romanticizing your suffering or believing it's as attached to you as a person as your arms and legs are to your body "And nobody told me it ended" : there's a saying that if you sit in shit long enough you stop smelling it. When you're "used to" suffering, or that suffering becomes "normal" for you, the world continues on almost without you. Psychologically it's possible to almost be stuck in the age you were when the bad thing happened, or started. This is part of why people age regress when triggered or trying to cope. "It left a pearl in my head" : remember the foreign object? The thing that's not supposed to be there, the threat to the oyster "And I roll it around every night just to watch it grow" : the way oysters shift the soon to be pearl around and coat it as a way of protecting itself is mirrored here. It's not unusual that trauma rears its head at night, since everything is generally more still and quiet. Less distraction means you have more time alone with these uncomfortable thoughts. "Every night baby that's where I go" : trauma isn't something you can just turn off. Even if you pretend it didn't happen, that doesn't undo the reality of it. Ignoring the problem won't make it go away. "There's a hole that you fill/you fill/you fill-" : the idea of another person being your "other half", or filling in a missing piece "But it's just that I fell in love with a war/and nobody told me it ended/and it left a pearl in my head/and I roll it around every night/just to watch it grow/every night, baby that's where I go"
thanks for making me cry 😀👍 i'm dealing with ptsd but i'm so scared to get help so i haven't told anybody the full truth, only giving bits and pieces, like saying that i have trouble sleeping but not telling them how bad it is, or why. i use distraction to cope and i know it's unhealthy but i hate being a burden, bc i know therapy and medication is expensive. i repeatedly gaslight myself into believing i'm fine but reading this reminded me that i'm so far from being fine
i don't know if i'm sad or relieved that my favourite mitski song wasn't on here- i probably wasn't ready for whatever callout 'goodbye my danish sweetheart' had to offer
"I Will" is my favorite! I like to imagine myself comforting myself instead of having someone else do it. It let's me feel a lot stronger and vulnerable at the same time.
to me, if your favorite song is "A Pearl" you probably have a LOT of trauma, be it recent or from your childhood that you're struggling to recover from. It'll be okay Friend :')
personally, to me, nobody wasn't about not having any friends. to me, it feels like that painful and heartbreaking feeling of being alone. not physically, but in your brain, you are alone, and even if you have people around you who love and support you, to you, you're just always going to be alone, no matter what you do
does anyone else not relate to mitski’s music and still love it? i guess i relate to washing machine heart but i don’t know, i just love the sound she creates and i like making characters that are similar to the meaning of her songs
@@emilymarley4505 i’m so glad so many people agree ^^ i was worried this would be taken the wrong way… i think mitski is a wonderful lyricist and for people to relate so heavily is lovely, but on the opposing side, i feel just amazed with her music and lyrics rather than that relatability!
i mean the song *is* up to interpretation (meaning seeing it as romantic isn’t entirely inaccurate since there’s no confirmed meaning) however… it’s hard to get past the sigh in the beginning and still view it as a love song
i cannot even describe how much i relate to nobody. one day my mum asked me “do u have any friends?” and i was just so stunned at how lonely i truly am. growing up, i had always have troubles with finding the right person without changing my whole appearance. i have been big and small and no one still wanted to talk to me
I WAS EXPECTING MORE IN THE FRANCIS FOREVER ONE :”) personally it’s my favorite because of all the things I can associated it with. i give the lyrics lots of interpretations but the first time i hear it, it made me cry because it reminded me of someone I lost and hurt me so badly. Also because I’ve been trying to get of my valid needing in therapy, and some kind of its lyrics reminded me of how it affected my relationships.
SAMEE like i was expecting way more than just that. the song is deeper than just liking marceline & bubblegum. i love francis forever bc it reminds me sm of someone that was the ultimate best thing in the world to me yet she slipped from my fingers bc of my own dumb decisions…now all i want for her is to see me in a better light than i’ve shown her. this song reminds me of her so much 😩
I have lost a couple friends to $uicide. Both passed in their teens. Growing up i bottled up all my feelings surrounding the incident. My parents never notised anything. Then when i was about 17 i started smoking, drinking and shit. I cut my hair and got stick n pokes. This mixed with self harm and ed. This song remind me so much of my mental state at that time. The sadness at the loss of my friends and that i don't care any more if people see how it's effected me. "I don't need the world to see, that I've been the best I can be, but I don't think I could stand to be where you don't see me"

Okay so the reason why I love Last Words of A Shooting Star is mainly because when I was little I used to have lots of nightmares which eventually warped my sense of death. So I usually connect that song to that experience.
I think First Love/Late Spring isn’t fully about ‘us’ that need to accept that it is an unrequited love, but a song made for Aromantic, or Demiromantic people in the modern day. Well, I don’t know about the relatability of my interpretation, but it definitely suits me a lot more and is what makes me relate to the song. When the world is so face paced and rushing the concept of love, it stresses my Demi-Aro heart LOL
This was such a good video!! I swear all of Mitski's songs hit so different - my ultimate favourites are probably "My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars" and "Geyser", but I could scream along to any of her songs any day
Mine is First Love/Late Spring, but the thing is, I’m finally in a relationship that makes me feel valued and safe, so I’m very happy to say that it’s not true. It’s my favorite song and I had my first kiss to it, so I’ve made a sad song bring joy to me.
Ohh that's a good way to interpret it. I love how versatile mitski songs are. Francis forever is my fav song. I interpret it as a person singing about not reaching their potential in life. They're unsatisfied with their position and frustrated with their reality.
class of 2013 is one of my favorite ones and i have a great relationship with my mother to the point of being afraid to grow up i don't want to lose her :(

“i will” is one of my fav songs from mitski and it’s perfection..describes how i am in a relationship and it’s painful how my partner doesn’t give me the amount of love,and a warmth i give them.
ohhhh myyy godddd these are pretty accurate ANYONE WHO LISTENS TO LAST WORDS OF A SHOOTING STAR, remember to take care of yourself please! There are people that enjoy your company no matter what and you are totally worth it! (lol my source is myself when i listened to it on repeat for a week straight while having the worst time of my entire life)
I listened to it non-stop at the lowest point of my life when I was so lost. Just a few months later, and I'm doing sooo much better, and my relationship with my family, SO, and friends got better when I opened up to them which made me realize that I only had to reach out and stop tunnel-visioning in life. It's such a beautiful song, but it's also concerning when you are able to relate to it. I hope everyone who relates to it will find themselves in a much healthier place soon.

If you relate to A Pearl, I just want you to know you are loved. Consistency, commitment, or trauma is hard to adjust to or deal with and that is completely okay. Learn how to recognize self destructive behavior, but never forget to be patient with yourself. ❤️

my favorite is first love but liquid smooth too, she sounds so good. I also love "Door" so underrated and is like poem. I love all the lush and btc albums in summary lol
i love mitski in general but my favorite is definitely a burning hill. the way i see it, its as a song about learning to live both with trauma and guilt - the harm that was done to you and that youve done to others -, and accepting that none of those things define who you are.

To me, “first love/late spring” isn’t about feelings for someone but being treated bad by someone you care about and can’t stand to leave. But at the same time not wanting to hear how much they care about you because you know it’s a lie.
I probably listen to I bet on losing dogs just bareeely the most out of all of these,, (specifically one live performance she has of it) and uh. Yeah honestly, your comment on that song really suits me as a person, which was interesting. i actually dont remember how i discovered nobody but whenever i realized im lonely and not being loved i would listen to it and cry my eyeballs out
love the video editing ngl, but also because every mitski song is my fav but first love/late spring hits different. since it feels like when you can't bring yourself to reciprocate someone else's attraction cause you struggle with intimacy lol
My favorite Mitski songs are Last words of a shooting star and I will. I really appreciate the "please stay safe". I am trying to. And I will is about giving your everything to a relationship and trying to seem a lot more confident than you really are to not lose the interest of another person. I tend to always do that. Though i don’t have friends irl anymore. Haha, the video was nice though.
I really like A Pearl, even though I don't listen to it that much. The interpretation you gave is... Accurate. However, I read a comment talk about how it's about being hard to deal with in a relationship because of your trauma, and I relate to that. My most recent ex literally broke up with me because my depression kept worsening. They left me when I needed them the most. They weren't happy with me.. Did I make them sad just by being with them?.. I'm not upset we broke up. We weren't right for each other. I'm upset that I missed all the red flags I swore I'd see this time.
francis forever has its own special meaning to me. i've felt as if i have showed a certain side of myself to those i love for too long and now i can't ever show the other sides because they might not like the change. i know i shouldn't stay with people who won't accept me for who i truly am but they are too precious for me to leave. hope i find others that relate to this as well;;
