Matt Dye and Adam Keith of Land & Legacy are on the Proving Grounds in SW Missouri showcasing what your timber stands should NOT look like! Identifying the three layers of a timber stand, over story, mid story, and under story, and managing them appropriately will dramatically increase the usability and productivity of your timber stand for deer and other wildlife.

I have 10 acres in Southern Ohio & just cleared off a slightly western hillside of tall Red Cedars & tall poplars....nothing grew under it...I planted 5 fruit trees already & will plant 4 Chinese Chestnut trees this Oct...I'm already seeing deer walk across the hillside eating the new growth....& i've had a salt/mineral site over there for 17 years...

Central Missouri what is killing so many oaks most of the ash have been killed off , it’s unreal how much firewood we can cut in a 2-3 acre area

How can I tell if my forrest is supposed to be an oak forrest, or a maple/hickory forrest or beach dominated? I have specimens of each of all sizes from 1" up to very large. My canopy and understory look very similar to video. Ive started removing mid-story trees, leaving some of the mid- story red and white oaks, and also girdling/squirting larger hickory, maples and beaches. And selectively preserving large oaks. Is this the right thing to do if I am managing primarily for deer and turkey hunting, but also for a healthy natural habitat for native species?

Google USDA web soil survey and go through that. It will give you good ecological site info to base management decisions on.

Where are you at in the world? Sometimes you can consult with a local forester to learn or use websoil survey online to do a soil assessment and the drop down menu may give some good ideas of the historical habitat

@Landandlegacytube I'm in northern middle Tennessee, not far from LBL if you know where that is. I've been planning on having a forester out to do a timber harvest assessment soon. I will as him about this topic when he comes.

I've got 100 acres in NW Wisconsin that's mature hardwoods last logged in 1988 with 70% red oak, 15% white oak, 10% sugar maple, and the rest aspen/basswood/ash/birch. My plan includes reducing the basal area to 60 from 120-80 and clearing areas for food plots and several clear-cut areas. My forester is keeping some of the mature and mid-story maples. I asked him why and he said for diversity. Does this make sense??

Oaks are extremely hard to regenerate anymore due to high deer populations.
