Whatever Happened To Airbnb?
Airbnb, which revolutionized the short term rental industry, has been plagued with increased prices and fees as of late. The company's financials are looking better than ever post pandemic, however customers are generally unhappy due to the heightened prices and fees, as well as the increased duties that hosts are forcing. Airbnb had a rough time during the pandemic, losing $4.5 billion in 2020, however they have bounced back extremely well. The increased fees and prices of Airbnb have customers wondering if hotels are a better choice. Since Airbnb's goal was to disrupt the hotel industry, this can be seen as worrisome to Airbnb executives, as it seems the mindset of customers is changing. Airbnb stock has also recovered quite well since the pandemic, up roughly 70% as of April 2024 from its low in 2022.
