Here are my memories of Johnny Crawford who starred as Mark McCain on the classic TV western, The Rifleman, along with Chuck Connors. I do my best to provide an overview - based on my memories - of Johnny's career as well as a current update on this wonderful actor.

As terrible as it is that Johnny is suffering from Alzheimers, it saddens me more to hear about your mom. My grandpap went through a similar situation before his passing. He was like a mental time traveler. One minute he'd ask about a person that passed away years ago, the next minute I'd have to remind him that my dad is an only child. Having a son like you is a plus for your mom , no matter the situation. Love and Blessings to you and your family Dave 🙏

Thanks my friend. Sadly, it's pretty advanced. Mom knows that I'm family...but she rarely recognizes me as her oldest son.

@Pipers Fun Oddly enough it was the hospital that kill my granny and not the disease as they let her get staph infections from just not taking care of her. No attorney would take the case (happens a lot for those with the most cash gets the most justice). My family feels she would have lived at least another four or five years and another ten if she didn't have that damn disease. My thing is my step dad has it now too as he can't remember anything and checks out from the docs. Could be anything masquerading as Alz though. Luckily Mom has not shown the signs of it (just normal old age) but I am starting to have issues I don't like. I am 54, mom is 75 and grandmother was 89 in 2001 when she passed Aug of that year I believe.

* "Westerns." (No apostrophe.) With exceptions so rare that they can be all but ignored, an apostrophe-s never makes a word plural, it makes it a singular possessive. Example: "There were several westerns airing at the time, but one western's writing stood out from the rest."

Johnny came to San Antonio for a rodeo appearance in 1963 or 1964. My father knew someone at the television station where he would. be interviewed and arranged a phone call to me from Johnny. The Rifleman was far ahead of its time, with such great scripts and storytelling, and Johnny's performances was greatly part of the fact. The episodes brought innumerable joy to my childhood, and continue to do so to this day. Like Johnny, I became a performer, pianist/singer, to this day at the age of 65, playing the same kind of music from The Great American Songbook. I had always hoped of looking Johnny up someday to compare musical notes. I often look at his Today Show performance of "One, Two, Button Your Shoes". He is in so many of our hearts.

Another great part of The Rifleman was the musical scoring of Herschel Burke Gilbert, writing one of the most iconic opening and closing themes, but especially, the melody that came to be known as "Mark's Song". I still include it in some medleys on the piano, when I'm warming up the audience before showtime, and some people still recognize it.

I knew about Chuck Conners but not about "The Rifleman"--until a late friend had it on the TV and asked me to sit down and watch. I thought some of the scripts were a bit corny and dated, but Johnny Crawford was very good. To be honest, after my friend passed (soon after we watched the show together), I put it out of my mind. Then your video popped up on my feed. Thank you! Having grown up in the 70's I am sure I've seen Johnny in dozens of shows, and it is so very sad to hear that he is not doing well. Alzheimer's is one of the most horrible things that can happen to anyone--especially someone who had lived a good and decent life. It breaks my heart to hear that your mother is suffering too. I know the weight of the world is on your shoulders, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you channeling it into making these great tributes to wonderful actors who gave so much but have fallen under the radar. Hey Dave, Blaise here, Thank You for this, I just got back from riding my Mule through rolling countryside and I was thinking about how much I’ve enjoyed The Rifleman and all the fine character actors that were recycled and played different parts , one thing I liked about Johnny AKA Mark McCain was his loyalty to his Father in the absence of his Mother, and his roping , and his darn good horsemanship, I always joke if they had had a fine Dog on the Ranch no bad guys could sneak up on them. Tell your Pop that one Dave. I would also like to encourage people who have someone in your family with Dimentia to spend time and visit tell stories, sing, tell them what an important person they have been, you never know how much they understand. Now that WETV is out and an actual western channel, my father still watches all the "oldies" and I have caught The Rifleman many times when he watches in his viewing room. I am not big on the old westerns, but they do bring memories, like how 6 shooters have unlimited bullets(must be Nintendo version), a small tree is an invincible shield but a log cabin means you will automatically be shot, if you see blood then a doctor will save your life, if no blood you instantly die...yes, good times that teach how the world really works. Maybe we need to bring these shows back and enforce viewership, what could it hurt? Thank-you for posting these memories the way you do.💖🎶✌️🙏😻💖

Like y our Father, my Mother grew up watching westerns and to this day she still loves watching The Rifleman and has even called me a time to two to tell me to turn it on so that I could listen to Johnny sing. My Mother doesn't have internet but when she calls me tomorrow I can tell her about this video and let he know that he had been in the Mickey Mouse Club. Very cool. :)

Johnny Crawford was perhaps the greatest child actor _ever_. He never looked or sounded like he was acting; in every moment of every show he made Mark McCane a real person.

I just discovered your channel and I am very impressed. The video about Johnny Crawford sure brought back memories. I loved The Rifleman and am still a fan. Every now and then I still catch an episode on TV, usually early on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I liked your video mostly because of the positive nature of your reporting; you aren’t trying to find faults where none exist. I have subscribed and will check out some of your old content. Lastly, I was sure sorry to learn about Mr. Crawford’s Alzheimer’s Disease and wish him and his family all the best. The same wishes go to your mom and you and your family during these difficult times.

Well Dave, my mom and I, we both enjoyed watching western TV shows and old western movies from the 40's and 50's starting in 1959 when I was 3 years old and The Rifleman was one of our favorites to watch. Glad to know that Johnny Crawford had a pretty good success after The Rifleman. Sad to find out that he is suffering from Alzheimer's. You forgot to mention that Johnny Crawford was in the 1965 movie Village Of The Giants with Ron Howard, Rance Howard (Ron Howard's dad), Tommy Kirk, Beau Bridges (Lloyd Bridges son), and Toni Basil. If you get a chance, watch the movie. My all time favorite TV western is Have Gun Will Travel, and when I took my mom to go see the 1993 movie Tombstone, she loved it! her favorite character was Doc Holliday (as well as mine) played by Val Kilmer. One of my all time favorite western films.

@@jdsundstrom It is a hooky teenage B movie, but entertaining to watch. Don't forget the popcorn, hot dogs, candy and soft drinks, and if you have kids, an enjoyable movie to watch on a Saturday afternoon. (And don't forget to watch a second feature movie. I do miss dbl. feature movies and cartoons at the the movie theaters. In 1959 and 1960, there was this one theater in my hometown that showed only movies from Mexico and showed Newsreels before the start of the movie(s), as well as cartoons. My mom and I used to go there back then. I don't go to movie theaters that much now days.)

Good times.
