I sure was! I thought she was onto something incorporating violin alongside grungy arrangements, something the band That Dog did around the same time. She could have been part of a whole other movement with similar musicians, but it's nice that she had that kind of success on her own merits.
my friend would play Mother Mother in the car. I wouldnt put it in the category of You Gotta Listen to This. It felt more like it was a rehash of what was already going on
Honestly, I was a fan of Mother Mother. But since I forgot about her and that song.... I'll hafta dig in, listen to some music, and maybe return with an answer. I am too literal and methodical. You asked a simple question which should've been answered with a simple answer (🤔).... But now I feel the need to give a well thought-out response. Da vuq is wrong with me!!
"Mother Mother" is one of the most awesomely underrated songs of the 90s. Ever since I watched the video on MTV and on here, I've always wondered what happened to Tracy. Thank you, Rock 'n' Roll, for uploading a "What happened to Tracy Bonham?" video. 😊
Tracy might be a one hit wonder technically, but her songs to me are pure hits! Do yourself a favor and listen to "Down Here"... the whole album is a masterpiece form start to finish.
Tracy Bonham is alive and well and continues to make music. I've been her fan since her first album. I am a subscriber to her mailing list and she periodically notifies me of her upcoming events. She recently released a new video of a song she re-worked and is touring this summer and will be performing in New York soon. She's not gone, just not as widely known. I think she's great!
I worked in atl-rock radio when this song came out and it was HUGE. Not Alanis Morrisette "You Oughtta Know" huge, but pretty close (in my market at least). She had a follow up single, but we literally played it for like a week, and then nothing else from her. The music business is really funny that way.
Wasn't her follow-up single called The One? That's actually the first song of hers I heard. I thought it was also quite catchy, but you're right. It is strange how her initial run panned out.
@@jaketheman091considering the time frame, it was probably due to record labels paying the station to play the songs they want them to play. It was a huge scandal.
I remember this track went to number one though, it was huge, but it didn’t stick around for long, even though the song is top tier and so original, alt rock women in the 90’s made such good music, back when women musicians were legit original and cool…
What an incredible talent. Know idea how anyone could compare her to Alanis or Liz Phair, she was the complete opposite having been classically trained. She’s a stellar example of how eclectic the mid-90s were for a short period of time.
Makes sense. 3 one hit wonders. However, Tracy wrote her own hit song unlike those other acts. I don't consider 'What's Going On' an original song when it borrows so heavily from Billy Joel's 'My Life'.
@@RIOTEARTH Now, I love Billy Joel, and "My Life" is one of my favorites from him. But how does "What's Up" borrow from "My Life"? Not trying to dispute your claim, but I don't see the connection.
@@joeymorvant161 Listed to the melody of My Life. "I don't care what you say anymore this is my life." Then compare it with the melody of "Heyyyyyyyy, heyyyyy." It's pretty much the same descending melody.
I loved this song, it was a huge hit in our alt rock station, but they also played her other two singles from the album all the time too, which were also great, so she wasn’t a one wonder to me
It's amazing how much she accomplished at a really young age and while managing to roll along with everything through the ups and downs which life gave her. I find her to be exceptionally intelligent.
I’m listening to old Howard Stern shows and he just discovered this song on 9/12/96. I hadn’t thought about this song since around then. The lyrics remind me of my sister at that time.
I remember winning a radio station call-in contest and won a copy of The Burdens of Being Upright along with tickets to a concert she was putting on. I still crank that album from time to time.
yes ! touche' !! thnx for pointing this out. she's so intelligent she saw all that would be coming for her - music is a VERY hard "business", that's for sure.
I remember the track from back in the day and liked it. Haven’t heard her name in forever. Thanks for the reminder. I remember liking her more than Meredith Brooks
Mother, Mother is a great tune. I guess she couldn't churn out another one that strong. I bet she has it in her though, seems like a strong minded chick.
True. When "Bitch"(I remember on AT40, Casey Kasem would never say the title, he'd refer to it as "The Song", lol!) was out, she seemed like she was going to be HUGE!
It must be crazy being a woman in that no matter what bad thing happens to you it's always because you're a woman. The good stuff though is always because you rock. 😅
