My friends and I make a list of what herbs we want and we divide up the list so that we can share our herbs that way we get a great variety at a low cost. One gal has a dehydrator and she does the dehydrating and gets to keep a portion of everything she dries instead of her having to buy any plants. I love how easy it is to process dried beans and they taste so much better than store bought.

Beautiful canned vegetables! I come from a family of canners from generations ago. My mama and granny grew and canned our vegetables as long as I remember. I now grow and can for my family. Have done so for years. I am praying for you and your children to return to good health as soon as possible.

I have so much in my prepping pantry/office/woman's cave that when I started homesteading binder, I keep dates and contents of canned items. I've got so many ideas from you, Linda and Noreen on canning. I get so excited when I learn something new and haul out my canning equipment 😄👍🏻. My next canning session will be Noreen's pineapple jam. Thank you for sharing!! (And Linda's sweet onion jam is ahhhhmazing!)

Always lovely to see a well stocked pantry. Dehydrating is another great way to stock up and it takes up less room and lasts longer.The wild violet flowers (dark purple variety) is another one for a 'free' syrup. Thrifting is a great source for canning jars. A very handy tool, the food press, great for making apple sauce too and more.

That "cone thing" is a food mill for canning. It works wonderfully for apple sauce, or the plums you made jam from (remove pit) you just wash an halve apples etc. without coring or peeling and cook.....run them thru that. Same with tomatoes for juice or grapes for juice etc.....it works wonderfully and is a huge time saver!

New to your channel, please forgive the late comment. Your Handy Dandy Do-dad at 21:25 was called a China Hat by our grandma's and snooty foodies know it as a Chinois. I am lucky enough to have my grandma's along with the wooden pusher that fits inside. When I make almond milk I just line it with a muslin cloth reserved for the purpose and it works great. Thank you for the tour of your canning pantry!
@martaaberg3330
@martaaberg3330 7 лет назад
The Handy Dandy Do Dad is a China cap (maybe regionally known as a China hat?), but a chinois is actually a fine mesh sieve of similar shape to the China cap. Molly, you are so lucky to have your grandma's, and that it still had the pestle! I like to think 'experienced' equipment helps guide our hands.

This is quite impressive! I hope to have a storage system similar to yours. My space is limited so it may end up in my spare bedroom. Living in Florida, heat becomes quite an issue for storage. My hat goes off to you. Keep up the good work.

@DFGrill
@DFGrill 6 лет назад
just a note, that tool is called a food strainer, it is made so that you can squeeze all the juice out of a fruit that you have cooked down, if you line it with muslin or a couple of layers of cheesecloth you can strain any fruit or any item you need only juice, a food mill is best to make jams as it presses the pulp through the holes. For spices i would suggest using either a bladed coffee mill, or a mortar and pestil; both will make powdered spices quite well, but if you need the spices to be in bigger pieces i would suggest the mortar and pestil. wooden ones work but granite ones are really great especially if you get one big enough to use as a decoration. but they are heavy so you would not want to have to move it much

Hey, Mama! I love this video! I love to can also. We got most of our garden in (from seed-it worked this year-YAY!) We are growing green beans this year just so I can can them. I also grow my herbs. I prefer my dried to store-bought. This is where the dehydrator comes in handy. We make a beef vegetable soup and can it and it is to die for. Want to try meat when prices are low. Can't wait to see what you do when you have a new place.

+Wanda Keeter i didnt, i made it the same way I made the grape.. I didnt add cherries, from everything I could read and find through extensive research, adding cherries changes the PH balance and alters the safety of water bath canning it. So I chose not to do it. Hey Heather! I just wanted to jump in here and share some thoughts with you... I absolutely LOVE your channel and I began watching and learning from you a long while ago and you and I were pregnant at the same time, during the time you were pregnant with Mina. You and Matt are wonderful and my husband and I always carry on conversations about yall as if we are long time friends and have been chatting it up for years! lol....I love watching about the cloth diapers, the cooking from scratch, the homesteading adventures, the canning and baking breads, and just everything! ! I also fell in love with the Jujube super Be be prepared diaper bag in shadow waltz, and felt like yall were in my living room with us going through Christmas packages!!! One day, I'd love to be able to be blessed with one as well!!!!! Anyway...I just wanted to share my heart with you and Matt and to say this....everything yall are doing, is an encouragement to all of those of us that are watching, and learning....yall are also dear friends to alot of us that truly don't make time in our lives to slow down the pace of the world in which we live in this day and time and yall offer us a dream....a goal....a mindset so different from the others around us..to go for it...to transform into the people that we know deeply within us that we were essentially meant to be....the kind of people that can withstand the test of time and come out on the other side of this crazy world ...better, enriched, empowered, and envisioned.....carrying on the values of our ancestors. ...and striving not to lose the standards and gifts of knowledge that have long passed our understanding, yet if looked for and turned for long enough, will surface once again! I look forward to our future friendships and yet another episode of The Kneady Homesteader....watching, with cup of coffee in hand, and pencil and paper ready! thank you, you two.....for you both have awakened within me, those dreamy farm days of my youth as a young girl on my grandparents farm....when the humid and incredibly thick summer heat of the deep south, squeezed out every ounce of hydration in my being, yet pushed me to do more...dream more...and be more.....cheers to the future......God Bless!!! You have quite an arsenal of food and supplies. We should all learn how to can. Do you have your own garden?

Looks great! Can't wait to start canning this year. Lots of veggies in my garden this year. How do you keep your jams and jellies from turning brown? Also can you do a canning video of the beans in your pressure cooker xl? I no longer have the regular pressure cooker. Also I have a great family recipe for chow-chow, even though when I looked for it on line it wasn't the same as ours. It's green tomatoes, onions, sugar and vinegar, if you want it spicy you can add jalapeño. So good with beans and fried potatoes on anything. One more question can I use bacon in my beans when canning?

+Verna Holladay you know, i try to keep my jars in a dark, cool room. I dont have a basement or a cellar.....so keeping them now in my office, with darkening curtains and sitting next to the air conditioning vent is my best option. I haven't had any issues with food dis-colorization, and I have some jars over 2 years old. I can not can beans in my pressure cooker xl, because it has been advised by the National Center for Home Food Preservation not to. It is not safe. I questioned it myself, since thereis no gauge for me to go by......and so I turned to Noreen Kitchen and Lind's Pantry and they agreed, they too didn't feel comfortable. Now, the NCHFP has come out to address it. Here is there website regarding it: nchfp.uga.edu/publications/nchfp/factsheets/electric_cookers.html and a really great article I found about it: www.hippressurecooking.com/consumer-alert-no-pressure-canning-in-un-tested-multi-cookers/ And absolutely you can add bacon to home canned beans! They process at the same processing time. :D

+The Kneady Homesteader ok that explains why my jelly turns dark. I live along the central coast and most of us have no air conditioning. They are kept in a dark pantry but it gets warm since we get in the upper 80's to lower 90's, unless we have a heat wave. Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a new pressure cooker for my green beans since I really dislike frozen green beans.

I noticed you don't use rings on your jars , are they just not necessarily? I am very new to canning, love your stock pile of jars, amazing.

not to store them. once they cool, i remove the rings/bands, wash them good in hot soapy vinegar water, dry them, label them and store them in the pantry. rings over time can rust. also if your lid ever fails and pops open, having the band on can prevent it to reseal, causing a false seal, with rotting food inside.
