We explore the differences between an expensive and our most popular electric fireplace the Dimplex Ignite xl, vs. old technology and an off the shelf type product. The question is, are the more expensive electric fireplaces worth the money? The only way that I can seem to tell is going to be by opening them up and taking them apart and seeing which one is better?
Well we took them apart. And lets just say there is a big difference.
Two main things stood out to me. One the quality of the the raw materials was far superior on the dimplex.
But more importantly, the DESIGN itself was much better, better designed blower systems, better flame, etc. See its not just about having better materials, its that an actual team of individuals spend time designing the product to create a superior consumer experience.
Don’t forget if your in the Denver Colorado Area visit our showroom today.

I was able to fix the motor on my old technology fireplace by myself with a $10 motor bought on Amazon. I have no experience doing thus stuff, but I was happy the simplicity of the old technology made it possible for me to repair it on my kitchen table in 30 minutes. 😂

Thank you for showing the inside of the device (the magic). Looks like the technology is identical, just better parts like the fans and flame visual effect. At the end it's heating coil with a fan (the $20 heater without the visual effect of the fireplace). I was expecting an LCD or LED in the new model, because I was thinking about using a TV and integrating a heating element from a $20 heater. That way the TV can be used at a TV and/or fireplace. The design is so simplistic that just about any copycat can replicate it.

Hey Trevor - Thanks for doing this videos! Super helpful. Quick question, is the Dimplex IgniteXL still a solid option in 2023? I’d love to get the Bold but that’s out of my budget. I’m really debating between a 50” IgniteXL or the 50” Multi-Fire Slim. Is the slim quite a step down from the IgniteXL? Any Modern Flames in these two price ranges you like better? Thanks again!

Great review...Now I do understand the differences between basic and upscale models. While I think the built quality is higher for the more expensive models than the basic one, I am wondering if those differences warrant twice or thrice the price differences. Plate glass vs plastic sheet? stamped steel sheet vs nothing? blower fans vs computer type fans? reflector differences? The materials costs are not much between the two though. I guess it is a personal choice which one he likes and willing to pay for it...After all, these are all fake fireplaces....

@southbridgeforestHOA

but the profit margin on one is much MUCH better. it's not rocket science, it's called salesmanship. Making minior differences sound so much better when in fact all electric fire places are expensive to heat with and are for looks only.

@@denjhill I agree. It's all about marketing. The look between the "old technology " and new technology , I have to be honest, is not that much different.. actually it looks just as good. Most people don't buy these as a major heating appliance. To me the cheaper ones have more realistic and variable flame patterns not restricted by a cutout. The heater also works. Not worth the price difference to me. Both are simple designs because that is all that is required. If you need a 220 volt heater to blast out hot air, an electric fireplace probably isn't what you need.

@@mightymousebq Thank you. I just have 2 more questions on this model. My contractor installed and while my unit is about 47 inches to center off the floor to see over a couch, I easily see when crouching or sitting on the sofa a metal strip with screws holding in the back reflective panel and it is slightly lower on the left than right (not straight across). 1. Should I see this piece of metal at all even if looking up at the fireplace, or if so, can it be painted black with fire retardant black paint? It looks very unfinished this way. 2. On the outside glass there were two black one inch clips with protruding zip-tie-like (well, more like the things you tie around your bread bag if that) that I think are to cover the metal clips that the outer glass fits into to screw down. Are they for that, and won't they melt? I don't know how they would stay securely on anyway, unless you're supposed to wrap the plastic protruding pieces around it? I never could get the front glass to sit into the left side of the screw down bracket piece (it kept hitting on the top right and when finally jiggered it into place it never fell back all the way into the left bracket so only have it secured with the one screw on the right). I noticed a smudge on the inside so need to take it off anyway, maybe I can get it to sit correctly on third try. Ugh.
