Growers who plant winter wheat early can expect higher yields, but growing conditions and the environment can impact plant physiology and how the growing crop should be managed.
On this episode of the RealAgriculture Wheat School, we're joined by University of Guelph graduate student Emma Dieleman who shares what she's learning from her wheat planting date research. In the video, Dieleman and host Bernard Tobin start the conversation with a look at her findings on soybean desiccation and the impact on wheat planting date.
Dieleman's research focuses on three different soybean desiccant products and three application timings. Desiccants sprayed at the earliest application timing (R 6.5) delivered a five to 10 day accelerated soybean drydown. That's a significant advantage for growers who want to plant wheat as early as possible following soybean harvest, she notes.
When it comes to planting date, Dieleman's research indicates that planting early does deliver a yield advantage. After two years of trials comparing four different planting dates ranging from Sept. 18 to Nov. 15, the data indicates that the earliest planting dates consistently delivers higher yields, she says. As planting dates push later into October and November, yield reductions can range from 10 to 50 bu/ac.

Hi, can you send wheat seed in Pakistan?

Can you guys stop with the weird sprays. Farm natural or get out. Let the crops mature. Get out of commodity system as well.

For real, I had a bad feeling when I saw the Syngenta banner … I never heard about desiccants until now. Can’t unlearn that … 😒

Yes, farm like it was done in the Roman times

@@MirroredInMudHi. You should look into the dessicants they spray on mature wheat and oats. Sometimes round up. The farmers can then harvest it sooner and get it sold. Problem is that alot of counties dont want round up sprayed cereal grains. So we have to keep it local and grind it into cheerios for our children to eat. I guess it helps the farmers though.

It's not about yield its about quality. Modern yield conscious grain varieties are trash. Also gmo are totally unnecessary.

There are no gmo wheat varieties that I know of. What non-modern wheat varieties do you suggest growing?

@mylesfalconer9183 red fife, kamut khorason, spelt too name a few. I recently got a bunch of wheat varieties from around the world that I will try hopefully over the winter.

Do you have any information on desiccation with borax? Rate? Product? Can you use solubor and could you apply with pivot irrigation? Seems like a good option if you need boron for the next crop

Dessication means spraying with chemicals, which has EVIL effects on human health as the chemicals work their way through the food chain into our metabolism. I speak as one who has experienced adverse effects of agricultural chemicals. Eating as nearly organic as possible has helped my health a lot. Agriculture that ignores the health of the consumers is not a good thing.
