After defeating Roger Federer earlier in 2004 , Little Rafa didn't have the best season ,He suffered a stress fracture in his ankle during his Round of 16 victory over Richard Gasquet, causing him to miss the trio of clay Masters series tournaments, the French Open, and Wimbledon. But in the end of the season , Rafa played a match against Andy Roddick that made the entire Tennis world fall in love with him!

I was at that match!, normally Ferrero was going to play it but they decided to put Rafa instead, Ferrero had just been number 1 in the world and won Roland Garros the year before, Rafa was 52 in the world. It was the best tennis experience I’ve lived in my life!, I was fortunate enough to be really close to the court, the atmosphere was amazing, but above all, the match that young Rafa played was just amazing, who would guess back then that that kid would become one of the, or “The”, best players in the history of tennis. It started in Miami in 2004 when this 17 year old kid beat another kid, who just happened to be seeded No1. It feels as though I have been teleported to 2021 and am asking how the hell did it all happen so fast 🤔

The 17 year old Spaniard plays well on clay. If he tries hard, he might just win a Roland Garros trophy one day!

While they were never buddies like Rafa and Roger were, I always liked to think there was a very real likeable respect between these two after their first two matches here and at the US Open. They both seemed keenly aware of how dangerous the other could be, and as Rafa would progress I like to think he never forgot that with Andy.
