I showed this to my dad who was born in the 50s in Detroit. When it ended he asked me "Why did you stop the music video?". I told him that it was the end of the video. He said "I know this song and I know it goes on longer". Turns out, he thought y'all danced so well that he believed that this was the actual music video. My dad, who grew up going to Jackson 5 and Aretha Franklin concerts in hus teens, was convinced that y'all are the real deal. Please keep doing what you're doing. Even though I was born long after this music went out of style, and even though I was born far away from where it was hot, it still holds a place in my of our heart.

I’m 67 and was playing saxophone in the clubs through this era. As sometimes the only white guy in the band, and in the south, sometimes the only white guy in the club, I had some hilarious moments. I remember one time walking into a neighborhood roadhouse in Witchita, Kansas, and literally stopping all conversation and all eyes in the club turning toward me. A frozen moment in time. I feel so sad for young people - they will NEVER experience anything like *THE 70s!* ...
@burleybater
@burleybater 2 года назад
The 70s were the one free decade we were ever granted. There was so much going on that decade. People could breathe. People could relax. When you look at the world how it is now - it's like comparing a dark ages to utopia. And the best part was that we didn't plan it, or try to contrive it. It just happened. It's like what people were capable of when they were just left alone, to follow natural instincts. It was ok. A little bit of respect. A little bit of style. A little bit of compassion. A little bit of love. A whole lot of human nature. And we didn't have an internet, we had 8-track. We didn't have smart/dumb phones, we had boom boxes. We didn't have social media, we had ten thousand clubs and every one was its own scene. We didn't have identity politics, we identified with real people who inspired us to be our best. We didn't have a 'gender spectrum' , we had unisex. We didn't have systemic racism, we had mixed race relationships, marriages, babies, cross-blended culture. We didn't have techno-pop, we had R&B, Soul, Funk, Rock 'n' Roll, Rock, Blues, Fusion, Reggae, and a thousand other mixes and matches that defined or defied categorization. We didn't have cancel culture, we had the courage of free and unfettered expression. I will always feel proud to have lived through and been shaped by this decade, that took me from my late teens to my late twenties. The music, the art, the literature, the film, the total output was like the blossoming of a renaissance. Modernity takes one quick glance at it and thinks it's just real weird clothes and bad hair. They don't know at all what moved up from down below. We had to survive the 50s, get through and then the hell out of the 60s, and have one decade of sweet respite before the ugly 80s showed up. Funny - I can't think of one defining moment in that decade. The whole decade defined itself for ten years. I think for a lot of us, half the decade moved through and was gone before we realized what we had. Like this glorious freeform performance art. Like it was okay to laugh out loud at all the stuck up people who just couldn't handle that kind of gift. Like it didn't matter how you moved. That wasn't really the point. The point was that you didn't have to ask permission to move. It was understood.

@@AC-mp7cx Black people created blues. Black people created jazz. Black people created R&B (the distinction from traditional blues is worth categorizing.) A black woman created rock and roll (and was the writer of Hound Dog stolen and popularized by Elvis.) Another Black woman crated grunge. Black people created Funk. Black people created Soul. While Black people maybe can't claim the creation of "pop" music in its infancy no one in thier right mind can pretend it wasn't definitively shaped by Black people (or white people riding the coattails of Black culture.) Black people of course also created rap and hip hop which is currently being gentrified by way of only promoting Black artists/an image of Black people that is a marketable stereotype while only allowing the air time for deeper more thought provoking and emotional lyrics to white rappers. There's even certain schools of thought that country music was created by Black Mexican and Indigenous field workers who were the actual cow"boys" but I haven't seen a whole lot on that front. So basically Black people created American music. Or at least all the fun ones. We know most of these things because the first accounts we have of anyone doing it were of Black people. And because Black people were ostracized naturally anything that was brought into the forefront of polite (see: white) society would be looked at with a level of distain. White people Did Not want to touch anything Black people did (both metaphorically and literally) so that's why you generally wouldn't have white people claiming to have created something everyone knew was Black. (Up until someone did and then white people proceeded to push Black people out of spaces that they created. But everyone still remembers who did it first and did it best.) Have a good day.
