** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Yesterday we mentioned that it was blackjackfitz' birthday and today we try his puzzle: Rellik Loop - which is flying high at a 99% approval rating. It has a medium difficulty rating and is just wonderful throughout - a stunning debut, including one really amazing idea mid-solve.
Have a go at the puzzle here:
sudokupad.app/ka3olc7kq1
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a given killer cage must sum to the total in the top left hand corner. Digits separated by a black dot are in a 1 to 2 ratio. Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive. Draw a single, closed, 1-cell-wide loop that moves orthogonally through the centres of cells, and does not branch, overlap, or touch itself (not even diagonally). All of the purple diamond 'relliks' are on the loop. The loop creates a set of “rellik cages” where every discrete set of orthogonally connected loop cells within a single box is considered a rellik cage. In a rellik cage, any combination of one or more digits CANNOT sum to the rellik cage value. A rellik cage value is equal to the number of cells in the rellik cage. If the loop passes through a box multiple times, each individual segment is its own rellik cage. e.g. A 6 cell rellik cage may not contain (1,2,3), (1,5), (2,4) or a 6.

I used to watch the videos without considering to do the puzzle myself because i thought they would be too hard. However, it‘s so much more fun to watch them after doing the puzzle yourself. Even if you do make a mistake in the process, you always have the video to check where you went wrong and with the newfound knowledge you might get it. I highly encourage everyone to try it themselves, you‘ll find yourself achieving things you wouldn’t have imagined yourselves to be able to!

Also, for regular visitors of the channel it‘s a great way to see what you have learned over the years. Plus, it makes the videos far more entertaining because a) you see different ways of thinking the same you thought minutes ago and b) you see simon struggling to find something you already know which - no matter if it was obvious to you or took you some time - is a great joy :b

As soon as I saw the 48 pair on the kropki, I pencil-marked row 5. So, once I got the snake into box 5, I could immediately see it couldn't join up, as this would have forced a 3 into a 3-cell rellik. It's one of those times when a little extra MARKup can help. :)

If Simon remembered his snake cannot touch itself, even diagonally, solving the loop would have been much easier 😂

Yeah, at so many points he could have colored in a bunch of squares. I stopped expecting him to see them at some point. That’s Simon’s deal though: he finds less obvious paths more easily and can describe the logic so clearly that newbies can understand and maybe spot them in the future.

I think the easier way to see that box 5 logic, which doesn't reveal as much as what you discovered but is still enough to get you to the end of the puzzle, is to notice that r5c5 cannot be on the loop (creates that bad pattern), and r4c6 must either go left, and it creates a 3 cell run there, or it goes down and creates a 3 cell run there (because the only alternative if it goes down would be a 7 cell U-turn, which we know isn't possible). From that you get that r4c6 is not 3. Now you know that you either have two vertical 3 strips or two horizontal 3 strips, and you can see that the horizontal option will always have a 3 on it. It's kind of the same logic, but being able to narrow down in advance that either vertical or horizontal 3-long strips are mandatory means you actually know that you have to be looking for where the 3 can be, so it guides you to the correct deduction.

Simon I never solved a crossword yet but I had a solve you helped me to find that I loved. I think it was something like “Turncoat Yankee hiding poles for a short while” or something like that. I was a bit surprised I came up with traitor for turncoat (at first I thought it might be the definition) but got traitor + y, the international radio code for Yankee, hiding NS to give Transitory. I never would’ve got it without help lol

As soon as box 1 is worked out, R5C1 _must_ be on the snake. There's no way to join the two diamonds below that allow it not to be. This moves things into box 7 which must be a 4-cell rellik. Then, in order to leave room for two problematic digits, the 2 must be _on_ the snake. And now boxes 4 and 7 are largely figured out. You can do this before you even look at boxes 2, 3 and 5.

The rules are wrogn in the puzzle link. It says the loop 'moves orthogonally through the centers of the cells', which I interpreted as a line, since there is no mention of the 1-cell width, so I was assuming the line could use adjacent cells to itself...

I thought the name of this video referred to Row 2. Long before finding the 8 in box 3, I had a 123458 sextuple in row 3 that eliminated an 8 from R2C3. Simon had a much more interesting way of eliminating that 8. I also did the logic in box 5, but was no longer considering the video title.

43:59 finish. I made a false assumption in box 6 (1-2 on the path with 3 off), which eventually led to the puzzle breaking. Fortunately when I spotted it, the only logic I had used it for was still good (except for a few numbers removed from unused pencil marks). A very fun puzzle!

Regarding Box 5: after having the two cells r4c8 and r5c8 on the loop, because of the 6-cage, the loop-segment must be at least 4 long (you have 3 on the loop OR 1+2). You can't have 5 because of the touching-rule. Therefore the end of the segment must be in r6c7 or r6c9. But it can not be in r6c7. Else the loop would have to go to r6c6 (if you pass by, you can not go there afterwards, because of touching). After that you can not go in AND out of box 9 (with r6c7 on the loop you must come form r8 or r9 of box 8). Leaving us with r6c9 as endpoint and r5c9 can not be on the loop (again the cage, now with 1+2+3). Regarding box 7 (after ruling out the 3 cells in c1, and having a 2 on c9c2): As pointed out in the video, the loop there has a value of 4, so 4 cells on the loop and 2 not on the loop. The 4 can not be on the loop, and either 1 or 3 is not on the loop. If the 2 would NOT be on the loop, you would need 3 digits to be not on it, but only two spots availible, so the 2 must be part of it, solving it.

In every rellik cell there is always 2 orthogonally connected rellik cells (in/out) For example in R6C1 the in and out rellik cells for that cell cannot be both R6C2 and R7C1 due to the rellik cell in R7C2, it will form 2x2 rellik cell therefore the one in/out of R6C1 must be R5C1 and Simon mentioned you cannot put a 3 cells rellik cage due to 1,2 pair therefore the other one will be R6C2

Finished in 39:57. I got to a place where I thought I had messed up because I couldn't see where 3 could be in box 9. So, I backtracked a decent amount and re-solved the puzzle and still came to the same situation. But then I realized that the loop didn't have to be in the non-cage part and then I was able to go straight through to the solution. Fun puzzle!

I had a similar moment except with the 2 in box 9, as I knew 3 was on the bottom row so I *thought* 2 had to be in the cage, which I had ruled out!

I made a simple mistake in the 22 cage, writing it as 689, instead of 679, and it went good, for the very end, when I finished the puzzle, but software said to me it's incorrect. That has less to do with cages but rather your inability to do math correctly. That being said if you actually have trouble with that, under Settings → Advanced on the puzzle website you can activate "Killer Calculator" which shows you the possible combinations for cages when clicking a cell in them, as well as allowing you to cross out combinations you know are incorrect.

@@1973HenkYThe purple diamonds are called "relliks" simply because they determine the path of the "rellik loop". It's called a "rellik loop" because the loop sections within boxes define the "rellik cages". They're called "rellik cages" because they're the opposite of killer cages and "rellik" is "killer" spelt backwards.

Not all cages contain 'relliks', which makes it confusing. The diamonds should therefore not be called after the cages.@@Qazqi

I'm sure it's brilliant, but if the rules look like a novel it loses me

If you’ve never done these rulesets before, agreed a bit daunting. But a lot of it is standard rules for killer, kropki, loop, and “rellik”(though admittedly I’ve only seen the latter once before).

Yes, I also have ADHD and tend to skim read. I’d like to see rules in dot points or a checklist style. The new rellik rule took me a few reads to understand, but the puzzle itself flowed nicely :)
