I remember this really awful math professor in college really lashed out at another student for asking a question. He kept calling him stupid, asking him why he was in college if he wouldn't listen or if he was really that stupid he couldn't understand and told him to get out. That guy didn't come back next class, I dropped the class later as well, many others did too.
This is not the same thing. The teacher Is not saying the opposite of the other thing she/he said. He/she expects you to ask when you don't understand AND also to listen closely when something is being explained. The teacher is not upset that you are asking but upset that you did not listen closely the first time.
This is exactly my experience working under a Korean boss. He's very skilful and works hard which earns my respect but often it feels like he's unreasonable and just releases his stress on us.
yea I worked for a korean boss for a clothing company as a design consultant after the first left abruptly when I was just the receptionist I left a month after she did like yea he always bought me food or gave me shit he'd yell a lot like a lot and would fight with his ex wife that works there too whole Lotta screaming and threatening to kill fuck that place lol
@@newaeon4444 You don't have to like someone in order for you to respect them. Two enemies can have respect for one another but that doesn't mean they like each other.
Bro frrr like I wanna get a trampoline so I ask my parents and they say “buy it with your own money” and then when I say sure they just explode and start listing random reasons of why not😭
Somebody is finally telling the truth about the Korean work culture and not the rosy picture of Korean offices shown in K dramas where people go only to fall in love. LMAO. And that urges everyone to go and work in South Korea in hope of getting their Oppas. And yes it happens in my country too.
And shows where characters are in some cut throat business or big job like doctors, lawyers, CEOs and such where they’re shown as having so much free time and able to go out and have much more of a social AND romantic life then they actually have time for outside of work. When really people are working all day and late into the night even when their like shift ended and most days of the week. Where as on the days off they actually do have people just use them to sleep in, rest and relax at home or to do chores and errands they can’t do cause they’re at work all day and businesses close before they leave or too tired to do after, then hang out with friends. Not much time to do all the things like characters on shows do on their days off or after work where they have so much free time. American shows (all countries) do the same and other things where even like Sarah Jessica Parker said about her character on Sex and the city like don’t look up to my character or think that’s realistic and u can do the same, no person is able to afford those expensive name brand clothes and shoes AND that nice and big apartment in NEW YORK CITY from just the money she makes from her job for writing for that like Newspaper column!! Even for friends they wrote that like loophole for how the girls could afford their apartment with it being Monica’s grandmother’s so they got the price like grandfathered in so it was cheaper for them.
Same here in the US. They get frustrated when you ask questions and say ‘you should know this by now’ but when you try it on your own and make mistakes they say ‘why didn’t you ask?!?’ Pisses me off like nothing else
Yea it is the same in the US Some bosses do it in a way that just immediately gets you upset others know at least how approach it I guess is the best way to describe it
It is absolutely not the same in the US, hence why Japanese and Korean work culture are called out as being different. HR in the US is some of the most sensitive of anywhere. Why do American children comment this nonsense on every video about every subject?
@@Sogeking995 not a child by far. And I literally live and work in the US and have come across this in every job so yeah. I’d say it’s the same in the US. If your experience is different that’s fine but don’t act like you’re the only one with experience.
Yes, this is very common in the US work culture, especially with companies that have not modernized. I see this less often in more modernized companies, but it is not completely gone.
@@Sogeking995 just because there are differences in work culture does not mean there aren't also similarities. The companies in the US are also infamous for overworking and abusing employees to a pretty severe degree. My own experience as a US employee aligns with this video too. And trust me, HR isnt that amazing here. People complain about HR just as often as other management, and there are plenty of cases where HR is plain unethical and corrupt too. And considering the fact that the US has its own very toxic work culture, HR obviously isnt that good if it can't keep up. It's nice when you have a good experience, but a lot of us don't, and that can't be ignored.
Some managers even though may have earned it little bit, behaved like this, and it's extremely horrible. I mean it, and it's not funny. It tears a person down, if person is soft and doesn't yet know how to stand up for self.
@@useless0ful You're right and a lot of people are like that as well, taking kindness for weakness. I don't believe in our subscribe to that. I believe that everyone deserves respect regardless of how "strong" they are or how "weak" and mild mannered they are. But that's just me.
I’ve head similar experiences, only it’s more like “Hey, you shouldn’t just follow my directions to the letter. Be creative and correct errors I made” 10 seconds later “Hey, stop correcting me, and follow my directions like I told you to.”
Probably why Switzerland isn't known around the world as a commerce country powerhouse. What else do you guys produce but banking services and chocolates? People stay content and don't wanna work beyond the bare minimum.
@@ctashi7081 eh depends on the person sure country and race has impact but theres always a couple bad apples in a bunch besides white male bosses for me as a female are either perverts or the best bosses theb again im half white and look more white which also has an impact but… female bosses are💀💀💀so ill pass this onto the females who gotta prove somthing through strict pain and strict rules
@@ctashi7081 I'm Vietnamese and I also saw that before, don't go around spreading misinformation and making people think that we are some kind of fucking narcisstic bunch, it happens, every country has good people and shitty people, they are only telling their situation.
This is disgustingly true. My cousin almost came back home to South Africa after teaching in South Korea for only 2 weeks. She was mistreated so badly but luckily she found a new school to teach at and now she's doing okay.
This remind me, one of my friend got in trouble with his mom.. his mom was scolding him then he started arguing with her.. she told him that don't talk while she's talking.. after few minutes of scolding mom asked why aren't he answering, when he started talking again she again scolded him not to talk when she's talking..lol
Yeah… that’s painfully relatable. 🥲 But just my mom does that, my father doesn’t. It’s really hard when those things happen, but I know that at the end of the day she loves me more than any other human. We argue mainly because we’re so different… I understand that and am not proud of it, but it’s still hard 😪 anyway, yes, I know of quite some people who goes through the same situation. 😕 let’s try to not do the same to our kids.
As an American living in Japan, my part time job as a waitress was EXACTLY this. “If you don’t know something then ask,” and when I asked, “Why don’t you know this already?!” I couldn’t speak Japanese well, and had never been a waitress before so I was trying my best. My American friend working in the company gets this type of harassment all the time as well. And mind you it’s not everyone who gets it that bad. There are oftentimes targets who get the brunt of the bullying. It’s awful and should change. Edit: I’m not demanding Japan change, I simply think bullying others at work is something that should change considering this is known to be a problem here (the one I mentioned was not my only time seeing/experiencing this, just the worst). I’ve been here for over 8 years, and really love this country, but I also think it’s fair (with any country that a person has lived in) to be critical. No country is perfect and every country will have pluses and minuses. I was only making a comment based on the similarity to the video content and my and my friends experience.
Omg I worked for a short time in a bakery in Japan and my boss was so similar; after like my 6th day at work she compared me to a coworker and said "she's been working here only two days and she knows more than you" and made me cry. 😅 I understand she didn't mean anything by it and it was just her way of trying to get the best work out of everyone, but it had the opposite effect for me. 😂 Everybody else at that job was great though. And I got all the free bread I could ask for. 👌👌👌 ~:~
The flashback is real y’all.I feel like this happen to ALL of us, no matter where you are. The toxic part is the boss themselves experienced it once in their life before so they are projecting it to the newbies or people under them.
I did have this problem when I first came to Korea. I said "No one told me about it" a few times about different things, and my boss got onto me about not asking questions. Later I said I didn't know about something else, and she said the same thing, and I was like "...I didn't know that this was something I *should* know about, so how would I know to ask about it?" She didn't know what to say to that.
Omg 😂 I’m too hot tempered. When I lived in Korea have had many jobs it always ends up with me fighting with the manager and quitting. I know it’s bad habit, I promise I am working on it 😂
Same here, my manager told me if you don't know something just ask and when I asked he said we can't teach you everything you have to learn by yourself 😅
Exactly...I start working in an institute 2weeks ago. And I asked them about everything...but I was scolded by boss for things she herself didn't tell me...so I told her it hasn't my responsibility that you forgot to tell me...
Its relatable 😭 I used to work at a cafe in daejong. I dont remember what I did but my boss got mad at me and said to stop guessing stuff and ask questions if I dont know. And like days pass by and I asked her something "you should stop asking questions!"
😹 my senior worked with an oil company for 2 years lmao she told me to keep tabs/record during meetings cuz the koreans always change thing last minute
I work at a Korean store in America (my boss is Korean) and this is so painfully accurate. I've had the exact same experience with him several times. He tends to be on the "figure it out by yourself" side more often but some parts of this conversation were literally soo similar to the kind of pep talks he gives me, it's scary. 😂😂 ~:~
I once worked on a Korean fashion shoot, which they were trying to do on the cheap, copying from a European campaign that cost hundreds of thousands. The Korean director made the mistake of being rude to me so I told him I'd throw him off the roof if he opened his mouth again. He was extremely polite after that.
Boss: Everyone needs to have less hours on this project. Pick up the pace Also boss: Why are you guys making so many mistakes? You guys are professionals and need to slow down and check it before you send it
my boss fired me without letting me know and i ended up showing up to work, only for him to be like “oh yeah btw, we let you go” needless to say i got my revenge 😇
This happened to me in elementary school: Teacher while scolding me : look at me when I'm talking to you *proceeds to lift my head to look at her* Teacher : how dare you look at me, when I talk you look down
I really really really REALLY hope Korea has a strong workplace revolution like the West is having. People are DONE and it’s changing rapidly since covid. It’s really beautiful to see the entire culture change and people are getting paid double with more benefits and get to stay at home and I hope Korean youtubers catch on and spread the research and articles because I KNOW Korean news, won’t 🤧😣
This Korean work culture, as toxic as it is, is what drove Korean economy out of poverty. Now that Korea is one of the developed nations, it definitely needs to go through workplace revolution.
@@choo1030 Yeah, the culture that once helped South Korea from poor to rich is now need to erase for future's benefits. This toxic culture is also in military too, which lead into bullying cases in military.
@@veeforvan3262 South Korea took this culture very seriously. Also the Bbarli Bbarli culture too. Every thing must be faster and faster, more and more perfect too.
Teacher : "ask me 1000 doubts and i will answer all of em" Student proceeds to clarify doubt** Teacher : "if you had paid attention in the last class u weren't be asking now !!"
When our teacher walks in and we instantly go silent he would say "why the silence? Do I look like Lucifer?" But when he walks in and we don't go silent he would say "You guys are so noisy it's like you don't see a teacher behind you" It's the confusion for me 🤧
It's so true, I worked as a developer in my initial years with koreans and Singaporeans , god they made my life hell on Earth😑😑😑, I will never ever work with them.
What the Korean boss wants the foreigner or any of his workers to understand is that when encountering problems, find a solution to the problem before going to him, so that he can present the solution to the upper management 😉
Yes I'm in Florida and have experienced this many times as a nurse. I rather ask questions and get berated than take the chance and harm a patient 🤷🏽♀️
