About The Guest:
Alex Honnold is on the podcast! Who? The guy that free handed Yellowstone? Close enough.
Seriously though, this was such a great interview. We talked about his two most epic solos that nobody heard about, near misses, lessons from other climbing legends like Tommy Caldwell, Jonathan Siegrist, and Peter Croft, pooping while free soloing stories, how the film Free Solo exceeded his hopes and dreams, the commitment to excellence, and much more!

I’m a full blooded aboriginal from north Canada. And when I went exploring through big rapids and small rapids with my boat and motor I saw an eagle at almost every rapid there was over 10 rapids I had to go. I was exploring and travelling to another reservation community by water. In our culture, birds sometimes give off warnings or a spiritual guide for us. Basically that’s our guardian angels watching over us or our ancestors as we like to call them. I almost tipped over at one big rapids but luckily I had enough horsepower in my motor. That is why we respect all birds and animals. They give food, comfort, and guidance.

I had a small manzanita bush save me after I fell on the death slabs under the Regular route on Half Dome - I slipped on some sand on the granite slabs & my haul bag was so slippery I just started accelerating towards a 200' cliff. The bush was about 50' from the cliff and it stopped me, but I kept breaking branches and ended up just hanging from a green branch until my friend lowered a rope and I was able to get back on safe ground. Adventure!

Great content; anything you survive injury free is a great adventure. That is old school climber mentality. Totally accepting that death is part of the deal was normal. Into the 1970s: one in ten climbers who went to the " Greater Ranges"; died. And most climbers aspired to go there. And climbing mags had a regular obituary section that had deaths of usually notable climbers on a monthly basis.

I think that's the image he cultivates. He also seems averse to the idea that he has no fear response. He even has a Ted Talk about overcoming fear through preparation, even though there's neurological evidence that he likely doesn't have a fear response. I get the feeling that he doesn't like the idea that he's neurodivergent. Maybe he thinks people would see it as taking away from his accomplishments or something? Regardless, I agree there's a gap between the perception of him and reality.
