this is why we absolutely need to regain a sense of community. it's not normal to hide ourselves away inside as soon as we get home, privacy is one thing but it's insane that we don't even want to see the person delivering our food anymore, they just drop it at the door and text us a photo of it so we know it's there. i admit i was also extremely private (and extremely lonely) until one day my unit flooded and the elderly neighbor upstairs barged her way into my unit, had her daughter watch and feed my kids while her and i spent the next 30 minutes scooping up as much of the water as we could with dustpans until maintenance showed up. it was really nice to have a sense of someone looking out for you, and we've become friends since. i help her when she needs it, we both bring eachother food, she gifts my kids things. ect ect. things like this case though kind of confuse me, as apparently the community knew this kind of behavior was happening and still it wasnt stopped or prevented.

I distinctly remember having conversations with my now wife/then girlfriend about whether we should or not, and never did because we were also afraid of retaliation from them. I still think about that couple regularly and hope they're both in a better place now and the situation didn't get worse.

I have also watched that documentary and others about Vera on RU-vid, and the case is so disturbing. I can't even stand to look at that monster, that Cheri's face. It makes me sick. She is hideous! This story left out that they had a pig in the house, in a closet, where they made poor Vera sleep. The horrible torture that this whole family, and their twisted friends, inflicted on this poor girl is indescribable. They all should have been sentenced to prison and the three that took her to the tracks and actually killed her, premeditatedly killed her, should have got the death penalty! How Nicole got off with such a light sentence is beyond me. She turned states evidence and ratted out the rest of them, but she still should have served at least life w/o parole. Poor Vera never had a chance from the day she was born. Sexually abused by her step dad, and multiple others, then to land in the hands of this family. There is a special place in hell for people that hurt children, and Vera was a child. Vera may have been an adult in age, but she had the mind of a child. This beautiful tortured soul has wings now. Vera's pain is over.

But how could she keep having children? They were taken because the mother sexually abused them, but she was allowed to keep new children? This is a scandal for the police and social services in that town This is on them.

A police dispatcher was interviewed, and she mentioned how the Brooks family, especially Cheri the mother, was not only violent but mentally tortured her, including her children that lived with her. Cheri made the comment that she is against men who abuse women, but if the women wants to be above men and step out of place they deserve to be physically disciplined. Another disturbing reality of the Brooks family is they had power over her and Cheri would not let Vera be a mom, she wasn't allowed to do anything with her daughter, it was Cheri's baby....she wanted a baby girl and she took control of her. Sadly, Vera lived in a closet with a pig that fucking shit and pissed everywhere. The girlfriend to one of Cheri's boys beat her with a belt with a padlock and sexually assaulted her with her toothbrush and made her brush her teeth with a bloody toothbrush. Vera was assaulted again by one of the sons girlfriend because Vera "supposedly" dropped a heavy brick on Cheri's foot. Cheri was a bad Diabetic and always had to have her feet wrapped. Every night Cheri made Vera rub her feet. By this time, Vera's face was all bruised up. Vera, along with Brooke's children, crossed the street to go to the soup kitchen, and some of the volunteers were appalled by her injuries, but they also failed her too by not calling the police. Even though Vera 's mother lived in the same town, Cheri convinced Vera that she was dead and she would be her mother. What i thought was strange was Vera was on SSDI, the whole Brooks family was on SSDI, and someway Cheri was able to get Vera's SSDI deposited into her account leaving Vera with no money or I should say some money for her daughter. So many people let her down. Vera had no one to protect her. Cheri Brooks sons (the evil ones) got off beating and torturing her, Cheri would cheer them on as she took each punch and kick to her tiny body. She was controlled and manipulative by the whole Brooks family. Vera's daughter did end up in foster care with a safe and loving family. Someday she will know the truth and know that her mom loved her alot and is in heaven watching over her.
