I’m 71 and have been in the trades since 1971.....50 years. I’ve been self employed as a g.c. For 41 years licensed/bonded/insured and still work full time as a carpenter. I do smaller jobs now....decks/ kitchen-bathroom remodeling. Sometimes it takes a little while for my body to warm up but it always does. I’ll work till I can’t walk. I think it keeps the mind engaged and it keeps me socially engaged. Physically I amaze myself sometimes at my productively. And....if I’m feeling tired sometimes I’ll work 6 hours instead os 8. That’s one of the benefits of being my own boss. Those short days are rare, however. Anyway, self employment is not for the weak. Dave Heitman in Omaha

Awesome Dave! It’s also pretty important for working men to get in the gym and train themselves for the labor load. I’m still young but after a gym session it tends to workout any soreness you might get on the job.

Dave, I'm 66 and still going strong. My only complaint is that I'm way too busy! I'm also developing some issues in my hands (stiff and sore) but nothing that a few pain killers won't help. Keep the faith brother!

Hey Northern Lights Renovations, I know what you mean about being busy! I’m booked up for about two months and getting leads every few days. It’s been like this for years. . It amazes me how much demand there is out there. In Omaha, and I assume everywhere, there is a shortage of legit carpenters. It is a rarity for prospects to attempt negotiation of the bid. I’ll submit bids by email on a Saturday night and get a “sold” reply at 8 on Sunday. I assume that,like me, you have a strong client base and you are “ their guy”. I’m also a member of the BBB and that’s where new customers find me. I can’t respond to every inquiry but to those to whom I do I always immediately apprise them of my packed schedule and if they are willing to wait awhile I’ll bid immediately. I’ve met wonderful people over the years as I’m sure you have. Back in the old days I was superintending construction of new homes in a new development. The developer would hand me a set of plans and say “build this one on lot 24” .......words to that effect.....and eVErything from there was my problem/challenge/responsibility. I weeded through subs until I found reliable honest subs......grownups......and those relationships/. friendships stand today. It’s an adventure and a pain in the ass, a blessing and a curse....but I can’t imagine working for someone. I don’t play well with bosses. I had a killer productive day today and came home tired but happy. I’d say 50% of my days are like that. The rest are not as smooth but I’m doing what I was born to do, I think. I married at 30 and we had a baby on the way and a couple days into the marriage I told my wife, Eileen, “ I can’t work with assholes anymore. I want to start my own business.” She didn’t bat an eye or hesitate. She said do it. I put the word out with commercial sales people at big box stores and lumber yards and they sent leads and it hit the fan. It’s never stopped or slowed down. Enough bullshit. Keep your eyes open and be careful. Semper Fidelis Dave Heitman in Omaha dba Dave the Carpenter

@@eileenheitman4351 Dave, those are words to live by...... in my lifetime I've found that 'bosses' are too far away from the actual work to really know what needs to be done. Being your own boss and being hands on are the ideal way to go. Unlike you I took a detour and became a commercial pilot for a number of years, then shifted gears again and became an electrical engineer. All with bosses of course, and never happy with the outcomes. Now my bosses change every few days (my customers) and I find that they are usually pretty great to deal with. Not always mind you, but within a few days or weeks I have a new boss, so it's generally pretty bearable. The one thing I really enjoy about this, which you hinted at, is the variety of things that I need to troubleshoot or figure out. It engages my brain, and makes the outcomes more satisfying when I can stand back and say to myself "job well done"! My one fear is that my body is going to give out on me. Every morning the pain seems to get worse, but I soldier on with the hope that it never gets so bad that I have to quit. Time will tell. It was great hearing your story. You sound like one of the good guys and it's been an honor to hear your story.

@zone4garlicfarm

I'm 61 and still painting full time with almost no age related aches and pains while most of my colleagues have needed shoulder surgery and/or make frequent trips to the chiropractor. I employ 3 simple practices to keep myself able to set up and climb ladders and scaffold on a daily basis. 1) I try to avoid reaching overhead if there's a way. Climbing one rung higher instead of reaching up takes a lot of stress off the shoulder joint. 2) I've had a daily stretching routine since my mid 20's. 3) 2-3 times a week I go to the gym for a full body weight workout. On the job we all tend to use our dominant hand more than the other hand. This makes one side of the body stronger than the other side which can pull the spine out of alignment causing back pain. Lifting in a controlled environment helps keep both sides equal. One thing that has happened in recent years is I've lost some of my nerve about climbing. I used to get a kick out of doing the jobs that nobody else dared to do. Things like church steeples, third floor dormers, setting ladders on steep ground, standing in shoulder deep water to set a ladder against a house that's 3 feet from a lake. Now I leave those jobs for someone younger than me. That house on the lake was framed and sided in the winter when the lake was frozen. The carpenters drove a boom lift onto the ice and worked from there.

I am starting welding school next week, at 48. Retired military, and an office job doesn’t appeal to me. I’ve always loved building and repairing things. I still have a lot of good years and hard work in me. Bad joints and all. Hard work depends on the individual and the amount of abuse you can take. Work smarter, not harder.. Edit: Grew up, and was raised by many skilled trade-workers, from various trades. They always told me, most employers want a person who works steady, and no matter how long you’ve been doing that trade, you must be willing to learn. The issue I’ve always seen with those with loads of “experience” is that they aren’t willing to listen and learn. They have it “all figured out”. That mindset will hold you back much more than age.. Companies don’t like know-it-alls or “experts”. They like people who work safe, and are productive. Speed at which you complete a job is t always the measuring stick of a worker!!!

I've been in the trades my whole life and are now almost 60. Yes, I notice it gets a bit tougher at times so am trying to create another income that might carry me thru my golden years. Our home is off a state hwy that leads to a local state park, but is also a part of a small community where grocery stores are few and most drive to the city for food. We are going to build an aquaponic farm that will hopefully become a market garden for those nearby as well as passerbys. It might not make me rich but at least I'll always eat.

Love the channel. I always simplify everything that I can, and I've found it helps me in business, and in life. My variables are hours, and how much of a P.I.T.A it is gonna be. I know what I want to make every day I work, so hours are a derivative of that, and I charge full price for material runs. P.I.T.A is an increase on my normal rate, and includes things like heavy lifting, having to bring an extension ladder, clients who waste my time, and work I am good at but don't want to do.

I’ve been in the trades for 40 plus years, trained as a carpenter but I’ve done what people need once I became self employed 28 years ago. I have slowed down my work load to where now I only mow lawns and plow driveways. At 63 I care for 56 lawns, I work alone. I get a kick out of watching 4 young men tackle 1 lawn, of course they are probably mowing 125 lawns per week, but I do enjoy being the old man that can still work. I have always viewed the trades as a sport. I am competitive and pushing myself has always been what I do. I have never gone to a gym, I go to work. I wont lie, I’m pretty beat up and don’t move well after dinner, but if the good Lord gives me another day, I will rise to it’s challenges. My only regret is that I wasted 4 years in college drinking and chasing women, it was fun but costly, oh well I don’t do either anymore.

When it came time to install the shower door, the top of the opening was good, but the bottom, near the edge of the tub, was too narrow. Had to return the opened shower door box to Big Box, and install a shower rod. Mr. Previous had done a bunch of head scratchers. He put the walls in before the new exhaust fan and switches were installed. I couldn't add seperate switches for the fan and light. Also, he jobbed-out the tile work to someone who had little tile setting experience. Boy, did it show. Warpy, saggy, uneven like drugs were involved. I just accepted what will be my last job before I retire. I'll be restoring/remodeling a 7,500 square foot log building that was built in 1895. It was the lodge for a complex of sporting camps and I'll be the general contractor making it into a private residence. Work will include lifting the building 10 feet so an excavator can get under it to dig for a new foundation, replacing the bottom courses of logs that have rotted from sitting on the ground, stripping all the old interior and exterior finishes and refinishing, new heating, plumbing, electrical, kitchen and bathrooms and a whole lot more that will be uncovered as work commences. It will be a 2 year project. Work begins this weekend selecting trees to cut for the needed logs.

@@carcasscruncher9354 Yeah, we are looking to meet basic goals with work daily. Basically hit a single or an occasional double instead of beating ourselves up and hitting home runs every day. Already did the hard labor over the past 20 years. House flipping is just a part time, already have a full time job. Now I have put myself into position to make $80-100hr. Do the expensive stuff ourselves and farm out the hard labor like hanging/finishing 40 sheets of drywall. The 8 sheets was a very small job in which its hard to find somebody to come in and do it. I can tape/finish it while working on other items. A 40 sheet job is $2000-2500 in my area with materials to hang and finish. I would rather spend that time on other things like electrical, plumbing, trim, windows, exc.

My niche is soundproofing and acoustics. Eventually I put on some muscle, grew a beard, and was able to instill more confidence into people but the first few years were rough and I hope to never go thru something like that again. If I could go back in time I would just work for someone else for a few years until I was in my late 20's. I had zero experience dealing with humans and business too. That was the worst part. I didn't go to college but I definitely paid for it.

Spent the last 40 years doing physical labor, 30 of that as a housepainter with lots of handyman work thrown in. I've done alot but always a painter first and foremost. Packed my share of shingles, set rafters, poured foundations, took down a few log cabins and put several up, hung and finished way too much drywall, etc etc etc. Been extremely lucky never hurt or had any neck, back, hands, wrists, shoulder or knee probs. Then came a heart attack and diagnosed stage 4 chronic kidney disease at age 51 just a couple of months ago. I have three doctors now, two of which tell me I'm done with physical labor, put in for disability. I don't feel disabled nor do I want to sit around and do nothing, not worried about my heart but hopefully can increase kidney function thru diet and exercise. Actual labor is 7 hours a day the rest is spent doing estimates or picking up materials. I absolutely love my job, my customers and I'm killing it. You give great advice. When I finish my RV park next year I probably will stop doing absolutely everything and maybe just stick to exterior painting and bathroom remodeling. I did get a website that was against your advice because I wanted control over all my 5 star reviews so my site collects all the reviews from every social media site as they are posted so I can keep and control them in one place and share with new customers. never too old for a skilled trade but there will come a time when certain task require more physical effort, which you may not be up to. At 68 I just retired from 25 years as a generator technician, mostly because I was getting tired of working in bad / cold weather. I was still doing it every day and whipping the pants off guys who were 30 years younger, work volume wise. I was also making serious money because I knew my shit and didn't make mistakes... and I was on a commission. IOW, I got the work done without spinning my wheels at the coffee shop or the parts counter. I could have moved into management, sales, or teaching in my field. In a perfect world I would work another 20 years but why bust my hump when I can do other things while I am still young enough to do it?
