If you’re criticizing the Sasuke retrieval arc for not having a clear distinction beteeen acts 2 and 3 and thus feeling too long(?) then your criticism is a bit shallow. Three act structures are guidelines, not laws. And to compare screenwriting to a manga with a long expanding narrative is weird to me. Manga arcs typically build upon each other. Sasuke vs Naruto isn’t just the climax of the arc. It’s the climax of the narrative to that point. It’s most like the 20th act of a very long story
Thanks for the comment. You made me realize that I didn't word everything perfectly. The length isn't even my main problem. My problem is that the arcs felt like their plot was too repetitive and lacking in variety due to the lack of an Act 3. I don't think the Act 3 division is absolutely necessary, but I think its a good seasoning for the plot that would always be a positive if executed decently. For example, not every story arc needs a character arc, but if it has a decently well written character arc, that's usually better than not having one. For plot, having an Act 3 isn't a necessity, but including a decently well written on is usually better than not having one. For me at least.
After reading Apple Black, I can confirm this is indeed true. No hate to Apple Black or Whyt Manga. Good video btw I haven’t watched all of it but you’re the one uploading it so it’s gonna be good.
First of all, great video and i generally love your content. I especially liked your point about the Sasuke retrieval arc. However, I disagree on your point about the "Battle of Fairy Tail" arc. You say it's "a manga arc with 2 acts that has the length of 3" It's only about 10 episodes long, one of the shortest shonen arcs I've ever watched. I don't think you can use length as an argument for it needing the 3 act structure.
Thanks for the comment. I agree that I need to refine my "runtime/long" argument and specify what is short vs long, but 10 episodes x 20 minutes = 200 minutes. Pixar has 100 minute movies with 3 acts. For now, good examples of "short arc" would be the early mini arcs in Naruto, MHA, and Black Clover that lasted 1-3 chapters.
@@YumesukeSutashika thanks for the reply and keep up the good work man. I still disagree with the overall point as the structure felt narratively satisfying for me to read. The main reason I feel this way is because Fairy Tail has much longer action scenes than any pixar movie. Therefore it naturally requires much more time to move through a plot that's of a similar complexity or even smaller. If you disagree that's cool and I'm glad you shared your opinion through this video. Have a great day!
Is it me, or most shonen arcs are kinda trash? Every shonen has that one banger arc, but they usually struggle to keep that momentum all the way until the end. Jojo parts have some awesome arcs (bites the dust, egypt arc), but the first half of the parts is pretty tame in comparison. Some argue DiU's first half is boring, and I understand the complaint. Another example is HxH, where the main highlight is the chimera ant arc (which spans half the run time), but it takes almost 70 episodes to get to that peak anime arc. Or how about shibuya and hidden inventory? I wouldn't blame you for dropping jjk after season 2, given how the writing becomes kinda dogshit after that banger season with 2 amazing arcs back to back (also, too many fights and not character moments). So i think this is a big problem as a whole that needs to be fixed by a change in the industry intself, because this problem seems to be showing up in any shonen ever.
@@encouraginglyauthentic43 I see what you're saying, but that only goes so far. If you do a bell curve for every anime you've ever seen, it's gonna be centered. But if you do a bell curve for your top 10, it's gonna be skewed right, not center. Imo, the battle genre is not only the best genre in anime, but most people only know the top 15 battle manga. So if I made a bell curve for the quality of the top stories in the top genre, it'd be skewed. But that's not even what the 1st guy said. He said most battle arcs are trash, which would mean his bell curve is skewed left instead of at the center, which is insanity.
