The only reason that the number two character is ever loved is because you write the number one character like a goofball, which is hard for most people to stand behind. Every number two character that is loved is the friend of the number one that’s a complete idiot and just a good fighter.

You can really tell Togashi was really struggling with his health during the climax of Chapter Black and at this point was done with Yusuke as a protagonist Which is why he should've killed him off and allowed Kuwabara to succeed Yusuke as the next Spirit Detective

This is a very interesting video. I tend to think that genre (in regards to writing conventions) and genre knowledge is lacking here. (Genre knowledge meaning the rhetorical exigences that framework a story). In story arcs and rules of convention, I think you're assessment of Toguro's ghost is incomplete. To clarify, while you did state the Lie's that toguro believes 1) aging is bad due to losing power and 2) friends/allies are bad for sustaining power are there, they are not how you described 100%. These two correlate to 2 opposing characters 1-genkai and 2-yusuke. The ghost for lie #2 is him rejecting friends due to his INTERNAL GUILT of his past. The characterization of toguro is himself reinforcing his belief in the lie because as a character, he's (metaphorically speaking) running away from his fear of weakness. Thinking of friends FORCES him to think of his dead friends. Even his team in the dark tourney is treated diff (abused to extrapolate power like Bui). There's flawed pride because he us trying (and failing) to justify "lie #2" A major catalyst for why toguro does what he does in his arc is due to fear of loss. He equates these loses to lacking strength. The "lie #2" is diff in meaning to "lie #1". Lie #1 is his escape from his fear of weakness while "lie #2" is his rejection of his revelation [he knows friends are valuable, he is just too far gone to forgive himself]. Lie #2 isn't something that needs to be proven with a "truth" because toguro has already developed it. The purpose of the last battle is to guide yusuke towards similar [metaphorical] questions that toguro came to once he defeated the demon that killed his friends. The truth for lie #2 (in regards to yusuke) means being able to deal with the weight of fear (weakness). I think friends give these characters hope and a common Shonen trope is to be given hope by the ones around you. Toguro LOST HOPE but realized the truth (independent from yusuke in the external battle). The external battles purpose is for the audience to see what yusuke reply is to that (which incidentally, I think gets muddled once kuwabara pulls a fake out. TBH, I think toguro is a full villain and complete, but I don't think the protagonist has an affect on him that much. I think the protagonist gains clarity on who he wants to be and how stern his convictions need to become to maintain that (even if I fail, don't end up like toguro). In storytelling, external conflicts don't always DIAMETRICALLY need the protagonist and antagonist vie for what the truth and the lie is. Furthermore, toguro wants to see if yusuke (who he identified with) IF PLACED IN HIS SHOES WILL validate his "lie #2" or counter it "truth". Sometimes the truth and the lie can be seen in what path the protagonist takes, seeing what went wrong (independent in how they combat it) and pivoting. I think the truth is REINFORCED rather than challenged (I personally don't have an issue with that, but others want the lie to at least challenge the protagonist). I'm circling back to genre knowledge because tragic antagonist plots are as old as time. And i VERY COMMON thing in theme is a defeatist mindset. Toguro has CONSISTENTLY been stubborn to a fault. His way of acknowledging is shortcomings is communicated in a desire for someone strong (perferably human) to kill him. I think you are heavily leaning to genre conventions to OUTLINE "this is good and if it don't do what's good then it's not" the story. Story telling is above everything a creative medium and I think it's important to allow deviation in established formulas (but we can challenge those deviations if we think it's bad [which I feel like you have done with this video lol]). I'M NOT TRYNA ARGUE I'm just musing bro. GREAT VIDEO. 👍🏿

Thanks for the comment. I think there's a misunderstanding here. The rules I'm using here are based on KM Weiland's flat character arc which is in her book, Creating Character Arcs. I briefly go over the rules in my first Talk no Jutsu video. A flat character arc requires the hero to create a positive character arc in someone else (convert them from the lie to the truth). My issue here is that Toguro has 2 separate lies, 1 lie 2 doesn't have a proper ghost, lie 1 never gets debated over, and Toguro doesn't reach the truth for either of the lies. Technically, Toguro doesn't have to be the character that is brought to the truth, but since he's the only one that believes the lie, his conversion is the only thing that could complete Yusuke's flat character arc. You say Toguro rejected his friends, but from what I read, there's no evidence for that. He's still with his brother and he formed new allies. You also said his ghost for this lie was his guilt. I didn't see any evidence for that. His guilt was the ghost for believing he deserved punishment and death.

A while back (Like a year or more I would say) I Rewatched Yu Yu Hakusho with my best friend and my cousin. We watched all the Episodes together, with my cousin watching them for the first time. I had a blast because (for the most part) YYH was just as sick as I remembered. After my best friend and I had watched The Chapter Black Arc though, he and I had a nagging suspicion so discussed it separate from my cousin because we had the context of watching the show previously. We had deduced that the reason the Toguro fight and the Sensui fight were so weak in comparison to the buildups and the rest of the fights in the arc is that the ideological battles were sound and had at least good foundations, but the battles were far too long and extended when they didn't need to be. I still believe this to be the case, but I think what you said in your video here may have highlighted a problem I had, but couldn't put my finger on. It feels like when the Theme changes in a story, you might not be able to recognise it right away, but you *CAN* feel it, even if you didn't notice it actively. You explaining what happens in the Toguro fight makes a lot of sense because while I think the Sensui fight is probably more shakily composed the Toguro fight felt a little worse to watch for me. I think it boils down to the fact that the Theme changing made the fight feel a lot longer because we changed course during the battle and don't necessarily pay it off with the same Themes that got us to the battle in the first place so could feel more unsatisfying to watch as a result. One last thing. 5:17 (I'm posting this because you're literally the ONLY RU-vidr I've seen criticise Monster) I think the reason Monster fails to ultimately make a satisfying conclusion is for similar reasons. People think Monster is deep because the villain is suicidal and is looking for a way to pass without having to do it himself. Yu Yu Hakusho's Sensui and Monster's Johan have similar weaknesses in that, on the surface the story is fine, but the length the story takes up to get to those moments makes the conclusions feel unsatisfying and like we could have wrapped it up sooner.

As someone that's been on RU-vid for around 13 years, this was one of the WORST video essays I've seen in that time. I lost track of the amount of times you either ignorantly forgot information covered in the manga or just outright LIED. I have no way of knowing which it was, but you were factually wrong about a ton of points you levied against Blue Lock. Really doesn't help you provide ZERO citations, sources, etc to back up any of your points while complaining about Ego not providing examples either. Hypocritical much? EDIT: Apologies for missing the pinned comment. Thanks for providing at least a few citations, however there were plenty other points that could use a source backing them. I highly suggest putting your emotions aside next time you analyze a piece of media, because I got the feeling this video was emotionally charged instead of an objective analysis.

2:58 Something you omitted is that Isom is a traditional American comic book and not a Western manga. Also you omitted the reason for its huge success with fans: Eric July is an anti-sjw, anti-race bending, anti-gender bending youtube commentator, that's the reason his fans supported him. If he didn't have those views, he wouldn't have gotten so many sales and fans. Anti-sjw sentiment is the most popular type of sentiment among game/movie/animation fans of the past 10 years.

If you were spending less time trying to make it look like I was omitting details, you might have caught that.

What made the Nagato situation so effective is that the situation forced Naruto to really confront it himself. Naruto didn't have the answers and was put in a position where the strength of his character got to shine. It's simple but idk how many mangaka can/have pulled that off.

He at least feels like more of a side character most of the time. I dont think hes bad at all. Just less than he is hyped to be or should be. One thing that I would have liked to see is more of him being an actual state alchemist, but I guess the story was pretty short so most of that was seen early on. We have to talk cause in a podcast or something cause you are definitely spitting in this video. I think a big problem with how many people outside of japan (mostly in places like America or Europe) view female in shonen or in most media in general has to do with 2 factors; one historical and one sociable. On the historical level feminist movement started to arise around the tale ebd of the 19th century entering 20th primarily becase women (mostly white women) were tires of being property to their spouse with no say or representation whatsoever, so they strike out and make movements for womens right which changed wit time and was reflected in various forms of media throughout the 20th century. Why do I mention this, its because its when women in the west where no longer being attached to the male, they where able to practice and partake in politics with a voice and a say on matter that pertain onto them and men, and to many it meant women where bo longer being modest, meek, gentle, nurturing, erc many things you would associate with women more than men, women where capable of doing more in society whther people see flthat as a positive or not. Now on the sociable level, this is mostly universal but still primarily a western thing. To many we make comparison to one another and tend to look at the cream of the crop or the top people without understanding the dynamics of how they got there ir why because its an unspoken desire or imposed sociable standards on individuals. This is important because it make the idea that if im not as good or contribute as this person I'm no good. Gender is and isnt removed from the whole equation too, which brings me ro the point that in stories like these if the female arent contributing in terms of numbers and feats they are dismissed since they dont being anything to the table in terms of battles, screw characters and their respective journeys and development or how they wffect others or themselves. Its a measuring contest basically. I may bot have been able to fully communicate my points or articulate the way I wanted but thats why I say we have to chat. Totally up to you of course

One slight correction. The overarching theme is not forgiveness, it's empathy. Naruto doesn't forgive every enemy in this series for their actions, but he tries to guide them to a better path. He still believes that they need to be punished or at least make up for their actions. What Obito did was unforgivable, and that's what Naruto also believes, but he still wanted to wake up the same Obito who wanted to be a hokage and bring world peace

Typically, when you shade you’re supposed to darken the base color and add saturation, and when adding light you take the base color, make it lighter, and then desaturate it. My theory for why colors seem flat in modern anime is that rather than color picking the base color and adding the lights and shadows where it’s needed, for shadows, they paint it black and use the “darken” blend mode, and for lights, they take white and use the “lighten” blend mode probably to cut on time. They just have to make a base color palette, and simply use black and white for shadows and lights.
