The reason some non-European countries (like Israel, and at one point even Morocco) can participate, is that these countries' broadcasters are full members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which, despite its name, is indeed open to memberships from non-European countries. The EBU also has so-called 'associate members' all over the world (including CBC in Canada), but associate membership does not grant one automatic access to or participation in EBU productions like the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the EBU may invite such associate members to join in, which is what happened to Australia. The reason for Australia's inclusion in the contest despite it 'only' being an associate member, is the fact that the contest had been broadcast and had been very popular in Australia for many years, with fans gathering in the early morning to watch the show live from the other side of the globe. Whether a similar invite will ever be extended to Canada remains to be seen, but one of the prerequisites for participation is that the Contest must be broadcast in its entirety - live, unabridged and uncensored - in the country in question. Hope this clears things up a bit? Source: Wim Lammens
I get it but still...Why Eurovision? It could have another name... It's very politicized...Back in the day, it was a real contest today it's like the Michelin guide, as fake as politics...
That's because if you read at their website - is not a contest for the countries of Europe but an event to promote broadcasting cooperation between the countries of Europe and their area neighbors
@@ard8785 That was Scott Fitzgerald. He had a few hits prior to ESC, but at the time of his appearance he was working in a meat market in Glasgow. His song was written by the daughter of Bruce Forsyth
She would have never succeeded without her manager Rene Angelil whom she met at 12 yrs old and became officially a couple when she was 19. & later married. I never liked him but he knew his work.
Still obsessed with this in 2023. The fact that she was fully crying and then just casually gave that awesome performance...that's hard to do!! But she pulled it off perfectly!
And Måns Zelmerlöw's overwhelmed little giggle in the start of his winning performance with Heroes. Gotta love it when the artists emotionally break the 4th wall, proving to europe and the rest of the world we're all just humans. Beautiful.
And Switzerland won by 1 point?! After Yugoslavia has voted?! That's history! I was watching that and don't remember that my country voted last and bring victory to Celine!!!
@@mjrussell414 What's wrong with what I said? Don't blame me for telling facts and the truth. Don't make yourself what you thought I was. Please do not!
@@georgemacpherson1992 It happened in 1999 when they got rid of the Orchestra's. After that the shouting and not singing started. Worst thing ever to have happened. Now the singers have ear peices in so they can "hear" the backing tracks. Poor Poor Poor.
When Celine Dion won ESC in 1988 she was unknown and she performed in french, but later she began to sing in english and boom! The rest is history. Mari
I actually can't believe that Celine Dion was on the Eurovision Song Contest!! It must have been after this that she became SO FAMOUS!! Well done Celine! xx
Celine took one year off after she won the contest came to the US went to school to learn English changed her look and recorded her next big hit where does my heart beat now.
Hello! she was a STAR in Québec long times before eurovision! she become international artist when she sing Beauty and the best and Titanic movies songs! she was discovery by U.S.A when she sing at the tv show of Jay Leno, Johnny Carson and Oprah Windfrey!
Celine still talks about Eurovison to this day and what it means to her. Especially when she performs in Ireland. She spoke on stage here many times that it was a magical night and Dublin was her lucky charm 🍀 Eurovision was the start of her international career as an artist, and also the night her and Renee became "close" for the first time romantically. She says she will always hold ireland close to her heart ❤
Celine has always seemed very humble to me. I love that the woman presenter realized Celine was struggling to dry her face off, probably worried about ruining her make up, and the woman helped Celine dry her face off. That was so sweet!
Not anymore, she is now also promoting evil agendas of Hellywood like Trans (Lucifer can be male, female or BOTH), NWO etc. Thats what sadly Hellywood does to all stars, either they sellout or they can go. Alot of singers and actors have spoken out about the evil ov the industry like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and many others and then they suddenly "died". Hellywood is very occult, always sad to see how these people change for the worse over time in that industry. They use actors and singers to manipulate the masses. You like your idols/false idols and then immitate and believe them. Thats how it also started that women started to wear pants (mens clothing), having short hair (masculine), being dominant etc. etc. Trying to blur the line between male and female.
@@crusher1980 wow your rant escalated quickly. As a woman, I will continue wearing pants. You’re crazy if you think in 2022 women should still only be allowed to wear skirts. Go back to the hole you crawled out of. You’re probably a man. You sound awfully self righteous.
I can’t believe how time has gone by so fast…Celine was spectacular that night and won for Switzerland 🇨🇭. The lady who wears to blue sequins dress, was Nella Martinetti, a well known singer at that time in Switzerland! She sadly passed away in 2011…grazie Nella per aver partecipato nel successo di Celine Dion, un abbraccio enorme, ♥️🇨🇭♥️🌹🇨🇭♥️
Condivido pienamente! Grandiosa Céline e Nella Martinetti anch'essa grande artista con estrema sensibilità.... La ricordo insegnante all'asilo infantile a San Pietro di Stabio.. ❤❤❤❤ Best wishes and regards to everybody from Italy 🇮🇹 ❤❤❤
I still remember how me and my family sat in front of the TV in Sweden and were so happy when Switzerland won. Ne partez pas sans moi was our favourite. It was the first time that I saw the entire Eurovision show and didn’t fall asleep during the voting. I was 10 back then.
@@nathancoleman8413 No, l come from Sweden but I remember that Sweden was quite low on the scoreboard that year and had no chance of winning so we kept our fingers crossed for Switzerland and Céline because we loved the song. I actually also remember that my mom said ”that’s the winner this year” when the countries’ songs were previewed on Swedish TV the week before the Eurovision final. We recorded an audio tape from the radio broadcast of the Eurovision but not a video tape. I listened to the audio one over and over again and and remembered that wonderful singer dressed in white. Ne partez pas sans moi and Céline actually meant a lot to me. Thanks to them I chose to learn French at school and it also made me very interested in Switzerland where I later also lived for a couple of years. They also made me a huge Eurovision fan. But even after almost 35 years, Céline’s song is my all time favourite.
These host are unbelievable. The lady repeating nonstop ’pRoints’ in her so called French. And the man just giving Celine a new surname. Congrats Miss Delon! 👏🏿
I remember watching Céline in an interview around the time that she did Beauty and the Beast. She was so in awe of meeting all the big celebrities of the day and was so humble. Today, three decades later, she is still humble and professional. From her French Canadian heritage, she is very hospitable and supportive of singers that sing with her. That is the key to her popularity.
Then she was groomed by her manager, her parents weren't too concerned because they knew she would be a millionaire. Celine herself became conditioned to the trauma and stayed in the marriage, the music industry and media were complicit in this coercion with a minor and made it all appear normal to the citizens who were too dumbed down to consider that grooming actually went on. She became a star, and all that glitter and glamour was all the people needed to blissfully ignore that children like Celine were fodder for the music industry... And if she were honest with herself today, she would admit she was groomed. Very sad indeed.
@@roseyk7677 I didn't know this story, but learning that she was 12 when they met (and he was obviously A LOT older) does feel... icky. But at that time I wouldn't be surprised if it happened all the time. I do hope we as a society won't accept that nowadays, and see the signs as early as possible.
People forget lara Fabian was in that contest that year. The only lady in 2023 with their history to dine at celines6table,... and it works both ways!!!@
Oh so grooming is actually not a bad thing. She has her amazing cereer, amazing life, and an amazing love life. And you who have never been groomed with your pathetic and bitter life
@@geeemoney1669 In theory, yes. In practice, no: the vast majority of participating countries have a healthy dose of pride in their cultural heritage and musical traditions, and will make a point of selecting an artist and song representative for their country and originating there, or with at least an obvious link to it (for instance: Turkey once sent a popular young Belgian singer with Turkish roots, and Greece recently went with a Dutch singer from a Dutch-Greek family - the idea being that such a move will in theory guarantee you a good score from one of the other participants 😉). And while the restriction of having to perform a song in your country’s official language has been lifted for the past 20-odd years (a rule which had existed for decades but which often appeared to work in favour of English or French-speaking countries), in recent years it has proved successful to ditch the obvious universal appeal of English, and to unapologetically sing in one’s mother tongue again, leading to non-English victories for Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine and Italy. Nowadays, when a country selects an artist with no direct link to them, it’s often because they are very small and have a fairly limited own music scene: San Marino, for instance, a microstate with a mere 34,000 inhabitants, has called upon Turkish singer Serhat to represent them twice so far, and in 2022 they even went as far as to fly in American rapper Flo Rida.
@@geeemoney1669 isn’t it just the song that has to be written by someone/people from the country the song represents? It’s a song contest and not a singers contest after all.
Celine Dion still sounds incredible whether she’s singing in English or French the way that she sings French in the way that she loves her fans is really amazing She is one of the best singers ever. what a powerful voice she has.
celine dion will always be my favorite female singer, she is in a different league to most other female singers! compared to now eurovision back then was so formal!
I was a teenager back then and watched the contest from our home.I loved the song and knew it would win❤It brings back so many wonderful memories...Thank you
Céline's song was so catchy, and her voice, stunning as always. Nice to see the great Lara Fabian as well at 6:43, another fabulous artist/voice, she had come 4th at this contest.
I remember watching the scoring live and how excited I was. I loved Celine Dion's performance, but I was particularly moved by Scott Fitzgerald's interpretation.
We love you Celine . I am from former Yugoslavia. I was 10 years old when i saw you here on Eurovision for the first time and many years latter when i moved to USA I attended many of your concerts . It was my dream to meet you and it came true. Love you always. Get better soon. We all miss you very much. You are a legend.
I wish Celine Dion good health. I read she had to cancel all her performances due to her illnesses. Get better soon Celine! We love you and your Eurovision win was the start of it all!
Sad! but Céline probabely gonna never touring because of her illness! my sister got this disease ! 4 years ago! you can't cure this! she gonna die from it! sorry!
Whitney Houston and Celine Dion will always be my top 2 favorite singers. I learned how to sing at 3 years old with Whitney Houston's songs then later Celine's as well.
If I were in the same competition as Celine Dion and Lara Fabian I would vote for a repeat of the competition to hear their voices again... Especially Celine with her beautiful, powerful and unmistakable voice!
again Queen Celine conquered not only 1988 Eurovision but the entire planets and every particles in between...love Celine since I first heard her music, I even had her french albums ❤️ she’s a definition of greatness with a humble heart ❤️ LOVE ALL THE WAY FROM THE PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
I share your admiration for Celine and her French recordings are actually my favorites over the years. She has very possibly the greatest voice we shall ever know.❤
Not only was this year made iconic by the legendary Céline Dion winning the ESC, but we also had another music legend of modern times - Lara Fabian - participating that year in the name of Luxemburg @ 06:43.
@@nemanagaurmyrn8758 I’ve been to a Celine concert with fabulous seats. Now I need to see about a Lara concert. I can't believe how kind the hosts are, they're absolutely lovely. And I'm so happy to see they made jokes back then too with the "Agatha Christie wrote the script tonight" line
Very different indeed. Men wearing tux, formal dresses for the ladies, the orchestra right next to the stage - very elegant. I love to see the hosts being polite and dignified, not shouting like idiots ("helloooooooo Eurooooooooope!")
I remember this, was 10 yrs old watching from Ireland, who hosted it that year, absolutely loved this song even though I hadn't a clue what she was singing about lol Eurovision was a big thing in our house back then, of course we wete all holding our breaths wanting Switzerland to win (or anyone for that matter, over the UK lol) big shock when Yugoslavia gave Switzerland 6 points, we all thought that's it Uk will get the 12 points and win but big shocker at the end!!!!!! Always knew she would go on to good things ❤
I remember watching the show and that's when began a fan not just because she in the eurovision 88 but when she started singing in English I was already leaving in America when she became more famous in America. Love her voice then, and I still love her voice now.❤
I absolutely LOVE LOVE this track .......huge Euro fan but I am always amazed how Celine completely detached herself from this stunning win and never ever performs it ,or acknowledges it I'd love to see her blast it out again well done Celine xx
I knew the man who designed the trophy that year (presented at the end to the songwriters). His name was Keith Leadbetter, a very talented artist and sculptor. He passed away a few years ago.
And I don’t understand why Cèline didn’t want to talk or remember anything about ESC, I mean, it’s a huge Event and very popular not only in Europe, all around the world, if I have the opportunity to be in that stage will be a memory for life 🎉 Cèline have one of the best voices in history ❤
Where did she say that? It's possible nobody in Canada or the US has ever asked her about it, barely anybody there heard of Eurovision til the last few years (and it's still niche).
Un solo punto in più che ha dato il via alla grande carriera della più incredibile cantante della storia della musica, una delle più brave cantanti di sempre. 🥰🤩❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
