In this video, I tell you when they can go outside, and what to do if they are driving you crazy but they aren't ready to go outside yet. Hope you love it! #chickenlandia #welcometochickenlandia #backyardchickens

Thanks for the great tips! My hubby has been badgering me about when the chicks get to go outside. I keep telling him when they're fully feathered. So, while watching the video I said, "There you go. You heard it from the President herself."

Mine are 2 weeks old and today i decided to move them into the coop. They’ve been going outside the last few days and love it. I put an upside down plastic tote with a small entrance hole cut in the side and covered with a blanket and with a heated brooder plate hanging inside it inside the coop so they have a special *room* inside the coop to sleep in. They’re are all tucked in nicely in the tote and seem to be ok. I live in south Louisiana and it will be in the mid 60’s tonite so we’ll see how it goes. There’s 13 of them so them bundling up together in their will also help with their body heat. I’ll check them throughout the nite and see how they’re doing :-)

We had 12 baby australorps in the master bath (shower was the "brooder" and rest of bath floor was the "run") for about 8 or 9 weeks. No smell whatsoever (Hemp bedding + zeolite) and no noise .. in fact, I had to put my ear to the door to hear their "inside voice" constant communication. Evening feedinig was showtime! Best show was the first match between the two rooster chicks (the ones with no tails). Best of all, they were trained to get up at 8:30 am. Was cute at the time. Has been a blessing every since.

Been busy getting the homestead up and going. Gardening/chickening/canning and such. My Rhode Island Reds should be here next week. I know it’s late to get them going in CO, but I’m hoping they will be ok and be happily in the coop by winter. Laying this winter would be a bonus. Yes! Dust! It is amazing, that is why mind go to the garage. But I have kind of an all purpose room there that I can add light and heat easily, 1 sheet of plywood will make a decent size brooder box. I ran into the unfortunate loss of a mamma hen when the chicks were about 4-6 weeks. They already had become established in the pecking order, and could forage.

So much good information here. we raised our chicks in our 400 sq. ft. cabin/home. As the chicks got bigger, I felt like We lived in a brooder. Had to really keep up on changing the wood chips to avoid the dust. Next batch of chicks (someday) we'll try hemp bedding to keep the dust down a bit. Have a good day!

So is it the bedding, chicks or food that makes all the dust? Thanks!!!

Living in Alabama, last week we were in the 70s & dropped down to the high 20s at night. I had 40! FORTY! baby chicks inside for a whole week. They were in bird cages, totes, baskets, you name it. I knew that the last frost wasn't our last frost like they tried to say... But I wasn't prepared for the "bouquet of chickens" my husband surprised me with from the feed store just a week before. Lol.

Southern Alabama here, and I have six chicks at four weeks old, in my office with me. They like to chat amongst themselves....a LOT. Dust isn't a problem, and the smell hasn't been an issue (I clean the box out every other day), it's the *noise.* I was hoping for that lovely chicken muttering, a sound I find very soothing. These babies sound like a flock of finches, peeping and cheeping and chirping non-stop. And my gosh, they do get big SO FAST. Fall just started, and it's still pretty mild at night, so I am hoping to move them outside in the next two weeks or so.

Zeolite or coop refresher really, really helps keep the bedding or litter from smelling, but more importantly it absorbs ammonia, trapping it and improving the eventual nitrogen content when composted. Try it along with plenty of shavings or hemp. Make kabobs with red chard and strawberries, hang them on the sides, they love it. You can use upside down Command Hooks, they’ll stick on anything, and plain garden netting on the top.

I too think of them as baby raptors. In NZ you can get possum dog roll. I have always fed mine cat/dog food. Finely chopped Possyum is chook crack. I also make a veggie “tree”, a kitchen roll cardboard centre, punch holes and stick the leftover bits of broccoli stems & cauliflower etc in. Hang it in the coop. Fun for all day. I keep my 7 baby frizzles in a big plastic bin. They will graduate to a bigger bin by 4 weeks then to their coop at 6-7. I am a chicken fan. Love them. Xxxx

What are your thoughts on moving them outside in a coop with heat so they have more room at 3 weeks? Our chicks are just over two weeks now. Basically want to use the coop as the brooder. The coop will be done any day now. We were thinking they would be happier with more room out there as long as we lined it with cardboard as insulation from drafts and a heat source. First time with chickens for us. They currently have an oversized moving box with 2 roosts that they love and a sand bowl. seem happy now but it's going to get crowded within the week Im sure as they get bigger.

Ok so I have a question. I am first time mama to baby chicks. They are now two weeks old. I live in the south and you may know how bad the heat is down here but if you don’t then I’m here to tell you that it gets hot, it gets hot! It has been getting around 90° The heat index gets to 97° here lately. My question is, with my flock being the first do you think that by four weeks they would be able to go out to their new home? Where we have their coop and the run is in the shade pretty much all day. We do a window that we can raise up during the night and daytime and also vents in front of the coop to keep air flow going. I am so glad that you have these videos. They have help me so much in understanding a lot that I didn’t know. Like I tried a little lettuce with them. They went nuts over it. And the idea of putting something in the brooder like a stick for them to perch on. I had not even thought of that. I guess that shows how green I am huh…😂😂😂

We'll be keeping our chicks in the garage at first, but it's our kids' old kiddie pool. It's not big enough to last more than a few weeks. The sides are low, too. We'll wrap it with some poultry netting, but even then, I'm expecting that they'll quickly fly out. So my idea was to move them to the empty chicken coop I'm building after a few weeks, setup the heat source out there for them, and keep them locked up in the coop until they're closer to 6 weeks old. The coop doesn't have a floor -- it's open to the grass, so I thought I'd cover it in pine shavings so they're not directly on the damp ground. Does it sound like I'm on the right track?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 4 года назад
I'm sure you can make it work! You might be able to take them off heat a tad sooner since there are a lot of them, depending on the temps where you are. You can certainly add a heat source to the coop, but, heat lamps present a fire hazard so it would probably be better to go with a radiant panel heater.

Mine aren't even 2 weeks old and they are like little pterodactyls. We have them in a closed off section of the bathroom - it's a small space - and they are in a 50 gallon tub. Should we open the window (that is screened of course) so there is a lot more fresh air? Is it ok that they are in such a small room? or should I move them? and our heat source (ambient brooder like yours but the small size) - do I need to get a second one? TIA!

I agree with Alorah Rose and I would also say Rode Island Reds because they are very calm and gentle and great in all weather conditions! They also lay big brown eggs! They are also super pretty! All chickens don't need too much space! If you are stuck mabey you should ask me or Dalia\ chickenlandia chicken lady for questions! I am sure you will be fine though!

I have no smell issues with my chicks. But I definitely have a room issue. I have 7 buff orphingtons in a Rubbermaid tote in my bathroom. So I'm thinking of putting them in their coop. I've been using the deep litter method and have no smell. But I really want them to have more room to move. In the heat of the day I put them in my rabbit cage on my back. They love being outside but it gets too cold late in the afternoon so I bring them in my bathroom. They aren't fully feathered out so I don't leave them out. I'm finishing up the flooring and front wall of their coop but I'm thinking when it's done putting their heat light in their coop and loading them in it. It's great during the day but nights are still too cool for them, especially with no head feathers. Their bodies are fully feathered but still fuzzy heads

I have three 7 week old, fully feathered chicks in a. 3x6’ dog kennel but with it being February we keep getting snow so I’m not sure if I can move them outside yet. Temps go from 25-50F and I’m scared to take them outside. I also have three 3 week olds in a 2x6’ brooder but had to put chicken wire over the top as one of them flew out the other day. I have 10 more chicks coming early April that will need the brooder. The three 7 week olds are all wrestling with one another in the kennel and have zero interest in roosting perches or pecking at veggie scraps. I’m not sure what to do as it could be MONTHS before we get temps in the 60s. Even in the peak of summer, we get down to 30’s or 40’s at night.

I’m right there with ya! What do It do with the temps not warm enough in time?
@MrsV18
@MrsV18 Год назад
@@Legatt_shanty I looked at our weather and put the chicks which are about 11-12 weeks old now outside. At first only one had the common sense to go up into the coop at night so I picked the other two up and put them in around 1am. We just got 4” of snow today which wasn’t supposed to happen…having to watch their water as it’s freezing but other than that they are now functioning well, going up into the coop at night on their own, etc. The younger ones are about 7-8 weeks and fully feathered but I’m going to wait until they are 11 weeks old as well to begin introducing them to their counterparts outside and transitioning them to the coop after that is done with so they can all roost together.

I bought 2 new chickens.. a buff sussex bantam to replace the one that sadly passed away last week and the cutest little pekin bantam... the buff sussex has assimilated into the flock without a problem but the little pekin bantam is really struggling. I think maybe she's too small to join the rest.. the others a free ranging without a problem but she doesn't come out of the pen more than a couple of feet and just turns around and goes back in as soon as she sees the other hens.. its been 2 days, so I'm hoping she'll get used to the others in a few more days, she's definitely more confident today than yesterday and she comes charging to the pen door whenever she sees me.. I don't want to force her into mixing with others and hopefully she'll just naturally find her place in the pecking order and become a part of the flock.. there's been no violence or injuries of any kind, mainly because she turns and runs as soon as she sees any of the other hens coming towards her.. fingers crossed it all works out..🤞

Oscar's Back Garden Birds Oh yes I remember now! For it to thrive socially, it would be better to have another duckling with it. A single duckling is going to cry a lot without a brooder mate. It can be done, but it will be a lot of work. Could you maybe get it a friend to grow up with and if you don’t have room for two additional ducks, find a good home for it when they are ready be integrated with the flock?
