I'd love to see a format where players where allowed to get exactly one engine hint at any time of their choice, where the hint would only be the top move (no line, no eval). Like the "ask for help" in "Who wants to be a millionaire". And it should be public info that a player used their hint (so opponent immediately knows). Then it would become highly strategic at what point to use that hint, and whether to spend time trying to understand what the hell does the engine mean or just play the human move. Should be a very fun format!

One way to nerf it a bit is: the hint itself is public, so the opponent not only knows immediately when you use it, but they also know what the engine said and can begin calculating the line before you actually play the move. I can imagine it being a lot of fun OtB: "Magnus decides to cash in his Stockfish token!" Danya comes in dramatically holding up a big card "g5", everybody gasps 🙂

The recent historical content videos have been fun and exciting and a lot of people love Gotham ‘getting back to his roots,’ so this would be a fun addition. It's not cheating if both sides agree to use equal technology without advantage for one side. It prevents blunders under pressure for both sides, players are not forced to accept engine moves, so it allows creativity an prevents stupid mistakes that they would not make. Top players already use the engines before the games to "memorize" the lines or choose the moves based on the unconcius memory where they remembered their previous games (aka experience). If both of them know they used the engines 12h before the match and they not call this cheating, it's fair to agree that they will continue to use the engines with the same streangth during the match.

It is funny how back in the day, the engines were weak enough that players could actually assist them, and if both players used them, they would still be able to play a balanced, exciting game. Nowadays, engines are too strong, so a human is no longer able to assist an engine in making good moves, and optimal play will always end in a draw.
