From Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy to Interstellar and Tenet, Christopher Nolan has directed some of the most spectacular and thought-provoking films out there. But today, I want to take a step back to examine his smallest and cheapest studio film: The Prestige (2006). Specifically, I'll take you through some of the simple, yet highly effective, ways Nolan and his cinematographer, Wally Pfister, shot and lit The Prestige in less time and with a smaller budget.

Exactly, nolan’s films demands the audience to think and imagine at greater scales than ever before, tenet is a great example of it, he wanted us to imagine a friendship in reverse, a world ending event as the beginning to the journey towards another world ending event, time loop thrillers re invented, probably why it had such a disconnect from audience.

that was in a time that Hollywood still knew how to make a movie with an inspiring story. Now it's just flat infantile superhero movies, absolutely zero gore coz God forbid we see 1 drop of blood and the CGI is cringe worthily bad. As is the woke neo-marxist message that's teeth grindingly cringe at centre stage. It's destroying Hollywood. They are bleeding money out of their eye sockets. So much so that the entire industry has collapsed. Studio's are taken over to avoid bankruptcies, even woke zealot Disney is now bloodletting their employees.

I highly and fully - can't stress that enough - feel that _The Prestige_ is, almost hands down the best, most perfect film I've ever seen. And that's saying a whole HELL of alot. It is the epitome, and truly, truly, an absolute masterpiece of story, cinematography, direction, production, acting, character study, drama, emotion, human relationship/dynamics, avarice, driven idealism/perfectionism, vengeance, destruction, multiple shapes of tragedy, lust, greed, pride, anguish, intelligence, genius - and the craft (not to mention the ontology itself) of both film _and_ magic. I've watched it many times, and always discover more about its plot detail and its extremely exquisite near-perfection. its interesting how the film was shot, good stuff to think about. but the film itself was poorly written, makes little sense. just one example, at the height of the film Bale is watching that Angiers guy drown in a glass tank...to get to the tank he passed a guy in a chair, who was only about 20 feet away from the tank. Also Borden was banging on the glass, yelling, in a panic trying to help, Michael Caine's character comes running because of this noise. The glass was cracked and so forth....so....we have a situation here where even the crappiest detective investigating the crime is going to ask, "who cracked the glass trying to save him?" "if this guy was trying to kill Angiers then how did he manage to set up a glass tank weighing a ton or two in that spot without anyopne seeing?" Also, they would have talked to the guy in the chair and Micheal Caine's character who both would have said a bunch of stuff exonerating Bordon...borden...however it is spelled. But the whole film is a mess from the diary to the overly dramatic "how is he doing that?!" moments, to the deal where they never explain if Bordon is twin from birth or made in Tesla's machine...and all the questions either of those create... its the same problem with Memento, both films are shot out of order. both films have some pretty decent plot holes, but because its out of order and its Nolan people seem to either miss the issues or are like to in awe or to scared to say something. Nolan can make a good looking film and has some skill for sure, but his story telling and writing aren't actually that good...Inception has issues as well, Dark Knight was pretty predictable and spent most its time talking about darkness but not actually showing any...even though the moment was supposedly super intense as a viewer you know neither of the ferries are going to blow up...like the prisoner stepping forward and disposing of the detonator was seen a mile away. It wasn't a bad film, but it certainly isn't as good as it's hype. Which i guess is Nolan as a whole...Dunkirk was a bad film...what was the McConaughey one with the space travel? had alot of the same narration issues as Inception.

When someone asks me to give my top 10 best movies , i always reply with: I can give you 50 movies that i love but it's really hard to do a top10. However The prestige will always be present in those 50 movies

I think low budget films is how a filmaker gets the most Creative freedom because no studio is going to trust you with 200 million dollars on a passion project that's original or something different for some reason

Fantastic movie. I wish we had more films like this and less supermodels in tights.

On other aspect of the cinematography master work in this movie is the placement of Nikola Tesla in the movie and place it during his Colorado years which brings a significant level of legitimacy and mystery to the movie in one bold stroke of brilliance. Without Tesla the final illusion would fall squarely into the realm of fantasy instead of reality. Tesla is the cement that makes this story work.

Ehm, it's based on a novel which is much more clever than the film. I love the film but had to be simplified to be portrayed
