When Cinema Reflects the Times: Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang (1993)

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
From the 1980s to the 1990s, New Taiwanese Cinema gained international attention for adopting a completely different approach to that of the commercial films which had preceded it. This piece contrasts Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang, two rivals who were the driving force behind New Taiwanese Cinema. The closing of a cinema invites us to reflect on society and the passage of history.

I don’t know how you did it, but I am enter ally grateful for you finding this video and getting subtitles on it. There’s so little on the Taiwanese New wave for us English speakers. This is such a treat. I cannot stop thanking all the people involved. Been looking for this doc for over half a decade. Thank you. It’s sad to see that Yang didn’t get his chance at a thriller or action film. Those would be crazy. So happy Hou got a multiple chances to explore Chinese culture. The contrast and rivalry between the two has given us such diverse films from the country. Glad people can learn more a out Taiwan’s history through this video. Thank y’all again.

Hey man this was great. Anything with Edward Yang in it is such a thing to behold as there isn't much to dig into outside his films. I really appreciate what you do with this channel. Many thanks

There’s a translation of Hou’s words at the end where he describes making films to tell the story of the “Chinese nation” - I’d clarify that what he’s saying is more along the lines of “Chinese ethnic group” or “Chinese people”

Although the subject is about Taiwanese cinema and filmmakers, this was made for Japanese TV only by the director Kore-eda.

mannnnn, I feel old now, at age... 36. But given that these three were quite old, perhaps it's not too late to start making some films about my favorite country: Taiwan
