There was an episode of a US cartoon series called 'The Racoons' when the Mr Burns-like boss Zero Sneer lost out on a business deal because he didn't have the required sum of gold by 6:00PM. When he angrily insisting that he did have the gold, and that it was only 5:55PM, his son reminds him that he had all the clocks set to run slow to get an extra hour of work out of his employees, at that the time was actually 6:55PM, missing the deadline.

At 2:33, France's borders look off but are accurate due to its loss of Alsace-Lorraine from the Franco-Prussian War that had occurred almost a decade prior to the conference. Fun fact: As shown in the maps at 0:03 and 2:40, the entirety of China is on one time zone, Beijing time. This is because of the Communist government's desire for complete unified control. This one time zone is also despite the fact that China is almost as wide (east-west) as the continental United States. So in the western parts of China, work technically starts at 9:00am despite the fact that the sun has barely risen because right across the border in Afghanistan, it's 5:30am

Love your videos, you’re always great at explaining everything that you produce. I’m interested in your methodology in creating videos, but I assume it’s just what your patrons vote on or what you want to do. I’m curious if you’d ever do a video on any of the Sudanese Civil Wars, Apartheid in South Africa or how Finland fought of Russia in WW2.

Actually, since the International Date Line didn't exist and Magellan died in the Philippines, timezones didn't affect him. It was Juan Sebastian Elcano who led the Armada back to Spain. Elcano and the other survivors had lost a day in their journey, but that really didn't affect anything until they got back to people who used the same calendar.

@History matters: there is one thing you need to add: the influence on europe time zones during nazi reign. The nazi regime standardized the time zone even further nu declaring berlin time (GMT +1) the standard time for all countries they took over. For a great part of countries this remained after WW2. For example: dutch time is GMT +1 but GMT would actually make more sense to use since geographically, the Netherlands is located GMT +20 minutes.
@nathanwaterser8218
@nathanwaterser8218 2 года назад
There are also Spain and France which use GMT +1 instead of GMT 0 Spain was because Franco wanted to be closer to Germany France I have no idea, I guess they keep their rivalry with Britain and doesn't want to share the Timezone
@tinus1971
@tinus1971 2 года назад
@@nathanwaterser8218 I suppose France was also part of the Nazi Germany time zone and kept it in convenience after the war. I do now that France used their own time zone during the 1st WW. But on your remark on freeing from British rule, I know that former British colonies use timezones different from their neighbouring countries. One example that comes to mind would be Afghanistan. Because they did not want to adhere to a British timezone system they use GMT +4,5 hours. There are more countries that use the same logic.
