Yes we all know how challenging selling on that platform can be, especially for sellers of handmade. But as the video suggests, if not Etsy, WHERE? That's what we're talking about in today's Coffee & Craft podcast.

Lol. The ad RU-vid put in front of me before your vlog today was Etsy. 🤣🙄

All my online eggs are in the Folksy basket now, as my bid to open an Etsy shop to compare it to has officially failed! I couldn't get clear enough photos to satisfy their ID verification, and I don't know if it's because I took too long about it, but they closed my shop for somehow violating their terms! I hadn't even opened yet. The place seems run entirely by AI, so I didn't even challenge it. Folksy couldn't be more different. Their support is excellent, both from staff and on the forums. The community is very friendly, and the platform itself is easy to use. Sales have been slow (not absent), but I have zero audience, I started from scratch this year. I've got two Christmas craft fairs coming up, so I'm working hard towards that. Great video, thanks! 😊

My question with Shopify is I see huge costs other than the monthly. At least, with other RU-vidrs. Your shop looks clean and clear and minimalistic. Can you address what other costs you pay for.

My lead magnet was one of my books. Most people Downloaded it and never read one of my emails. So I changed it to a shorter pdf. Less people have downloaded it but they are people who are more interested.

This. I think folks are scared of smaller numbers, but the result is often a much more engaged list. 👍

@KimBliss yes. It does sound crazy but when you think about it, it doesn't take thousands of people who buy from you often to keep you in business.

Hi Kim, I design and make patchwork quilts and I have a RU-vid channel where I share the making process. I have recently moved my shop from Etsy to Folksy...it was a very smooth process. I was fed up with the saturation of cheap imported quilts on Etsy and I was having problems selling to USA and Canada (localisation) but have had no problems since the move...wished I had moved earlier😊👍

Oh really, that's great to know! Would you say that you're making more sales on Folksy than you did on Etsy? I might have to check them out again.

I agree with what you were saying about email lists. I do think a lead magnet can work IF it is strongly related to your brand/products.

Hello Kim! I'm doing more RU-vid videos and that has helped. I plan to do more. I hate doing videos but I need to bring traffic to my shop since Etsy seems to have dropped me. I used to get 5 to 7 sales a day and then since August, it's been so slow. Then October has been dead. Last week, I finally made a lot of sales. I'm also planning to do TikTok. I've been staying away but another seller said that her sales have jumped since doing TikTok. I hate social media, but its really something sellers need to do to bring traffic. I opened up an eBay shop in September but selling totally different products. I'm testing things out. I only have sold 4 items there but not working on it every day. I've been concentrating on Etsy. Thank you for your videos. You are fun to watch and provide great information!

Hi Kim, can't remember if i'm repeating myself :) but it's annoying me.. the amount of cash that Etsy tax by levying an advertising fee has shocked me.. it seems variable for the same product and not insignificant.. the reason i don't like it is because i haven't paid for Etsy ads.. but they can seemingly use them on my behalf then take a decent wedge.. where is the proof that their ad was successful or even real..
@zeldacheri
@zeldacheri 13 часов назад
If you make over $10000 in any one calendar year, you are locked into participating in Etsy's offsite ads (OSA) program, which levies a 12% fee (on top of everything else) for any sales that result from Etsy's ads on Google. However, Etsy automatically now enrolls all new members into this program, so if you haven't ever made $10K in a year and don't want to be part of OSA, you can opt out. Not sure exactly how to do this, but you should be able to find it in your dashboard, Etsy help or ask in the forums. And apparently, if you live in certain countries, you can also opt out of OSA even if you have made $10K in any year. I'm forced to participate in this program, but over a year's time, the OSA fees amount to about 2% of my gross sales. So I've added that 2% on to all my listings which effectively pays for the OSA fees. I do feel I probably get sales from OSA that I wouldn't otherwise get. So if you're forced to be part of OSA, it's good to find a way to make it work for you.
@KimBliss

This. 👆 Assuming you are referring to the offsite ads? Don't get me started on that. The fact that they automatically opt people into these *without telling them* pisses me off beyond measure. But yes, you can turn them off on desktop if you're below the threshold. 👍

Hi Kim, just wanted to share my agreement with Google merchant center. It's so completely confusing. Plus it's telling me that half of my listings are incomplete. I can't understand it and honestly haven't messed with it since I felt like I wasted a huge amount of time trying to fit the "listing rules" even though it sounds like an amazing way to sell. It's just laid out in the worst way.

Theres also the British Craft House. Its still in its early growth phase, but unlike some other new ("nu") handmade platforms, they have sound ethics to grow the platform and raise its profile to bring in more shoppers. The lady who runs it works darn hard. Cant fault her enthusiasm and drive.. I was on it, it didnt work so well for me as i was not willing to drive shoppers to the platform and my etsy shop was waaaaay outperforming it. Plus, youre limited on how many listings you can have. But i want platforms who bring new audience to me, and its a bit early in its development for that... but it would work well for someone who doesnt yet have a website, has a smaller product range and can drive their traffic there. I did get some sales though and sellers there are positive about the site. Its one to watch.

Someone else mentioned this too. Thanks so much for adding it as a suggestion! 💚

@ the big advantage of the British Craft House over others is that it’s a curated site… sellers have to be approved to sell there… so there is NO mass produced junk whatsoever, (I don’t recall seeing any POD on there at all, it’s more artisan) and the offering on it is very professional looking. If your photos are lazy and badly lit & look like an eBay junk clear out, you do not get on there… which is unfortunately something Folksy suffers from. Folksy put me off as a shopper because there are a lot of ‘oh dear’ looking listings on there last time I checked… yellow lighting, photographed on someone’s bed… doesn’t motivate shoppers to stick around. I wouldn’t hesitate to try BCH again once they’ve grown a little… the cap on number of listings was the biggest issue for me on BCH… they don’t have a big server so have to put limits & that was giving me headaches to switch my listings seasonally. The other advantage is that it’s not saturated. I think I was only one of two or three needle felters on there, so if someone is searching for a niche thing you will get found
@chronicfish
@chronicfish День назад
Great video Kim. I can see how the handmade market on Etsy has become saturated. I was wondering, however, if you felt Etsy was a good platform for one to sell very niche, rare vintage products? I read somewhere that Etsy would be better than ebay, for that purpose. What are your thoughts?
@KimBliss
@KimBliss День назад
I would absolutely try it for sure. Especially if your products are niche as regardless of the saturation, if there aren't many others selling similar things then you could have a lot of success there. So yes I'd definitely recommend giving it a go as it's really the only way to know for sure if it would be a good platform for you or not. 👍

I've been asked before, but the trouble is I really don't understand it enough to make a video about it. It causes me a *lot* of swearing whenever I have to deal with it. I just wanted to add it to show that it can be done, even if like me, you're not really sure what you're doing. 😁

Yeah that was my experience too, but to be fair, I wasn't trying to drive my own traffic to it at the time so I can't say for sure if it wouldn't work now. But you'd definitely need to promote it I think.
