My first real job was at the Humble Oil & Refining Co refinery in Baton Rouge. About a year later I got transferred to the Enjay Chemical Company which had a plant as part of the same facility. This was 1964 through 1968. After that I moved over to Shell in Deer Park, Ca.
Where I grew up it was Esso. We even had a small Esso station in our town. I was just a kid and really into maps. I knew the guy who ran the Esso station and would go to the station all the time to see if they got any new maps in. Yes, kiddies, at one time they gave away free road maps at just about every gas station.
My dad worked for Exxon for 25+ years, beginning at the old Humble building downtown Houston and remember going thru all those changes. I even worked at the Humble station in Westbury as my first job back in the early 60's. Great memories!

In Michigan, there was ENCO in the 1960's, but they were all closed or sold when EXXON replaced ENCO, ESSO and Humble on New Years Day, 1973. In 1972 an ENCO station here in Battle Creek, Michigan (my hometown) participated in a test to decide which EXXON logo sign would be officially used. But Exxon wouldn't see the light of day in Michigan until the 1999 Exxon-Mobil merger, and there are now several EXXON stations in Grand Rapids and metro Detroit.

In Stephen King’s novella, which he wrote as Richard Bachman, called Roadwork, which is takes place during the early 1970s, he wrote about the character Barton Dawes wondering why Esso, which had such a pleasant sound when you it, changed its name to Exxon, a scary sound that had a name of a dictator from an alien planet 👽.
It was used in the US. For quite a few years. The video opens with an Esso station in the US. Some regions had HUMBLE, some had ESSO, in our area, we had ENCO.
It was true of all Standard Oil spinoffs. Different brands for different regions. The only exception was Mobil which was a brand once licensed by three different oil companies, Socony Vacuum oil company (Standard of New York) on the East Coast, General Petroleum on the West Coast and Magnolia Petroleum in the South and Midwest. Standard of Ohio sold gas under the Sohio brand in Ohio only, Boron in surrounding states, Standard of Indiana sold gas under the Standard brand in the Midwest and prairie states, later merged with American Oil Company (AMOCO) and sold gas under the American brand in states not claimed by Standard of Indiana. Both Standard of Kentucky and Standard of California sold gas under the Chevron brand. Back then Humble Oil was a merger of several companies, Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso), Humble Oil of Texas and Carter, Pate and Oklahoma which were combined Signal Oil to create the Enco brand.
Justin Hill Yes, I was wondering would one name take over completely like bp/amoco is just BP now. I did notice that the Exxon logo when followed by Mobil has changed slightly. The ‘o’ and ‘n’ in smaller case letters to match the small case letters in Mobil.
Being in Michigan all my life where Exxon wasn’t in our area until around 1990 I found this interesting. Our family traveled to see relatives in Florida in April of 1972 and saw plenty of Enco stations. 2 in half years later they were all Exxon. I didn’t know when the change happened.
The brand in Texas was Enco. Chevron has the rights to the Standard brand in Texas, and there is a station in Fort Worth with that brand, in order to protect the rights.
It got really complicated when Esso/Enco/Humble tried to advertise on network television. For a time in the 70s they sponsored NBC Nightly News but had to split the feed to different markets during commercials. Once I remember seeing the video of an Enco commercial and hearing the sound of an Esso spot. Not to mention that the stations based in Esso states spilled over into Enco states, and vice versa.
I've livfed in West Virginia (Esso) all my life, and can remember Enco spots on network TV. BTW, Enco meant "Energy Company," but here's the really good part. Enco means "stalled car" in Japanese. Ironic, huh?
I once wrote a letter to EXXON when I was a kid. I told them I wanted to have an EXXON station when I grew up and if they could tell me how. I also asked them why they changed from ENCO to EXXON and how I really liked both signs. I was around 10. I got a hefty package in the mail from them. They told me basically the same story you outlined, which is pretty fantastic because they didn't treat me like some pest, but actually took my question seriously. They also sent me information about operating an EXXON station as well as EXXON, ENCO and tiger decals. I'm still blown away by their kindness.

At the beginning of the video they make the point that Esso, Enco and Humble all changed their name to Exxon so that the company would operate under one brand. But when Exxon merged with Mobil they now control Exxon, Mobil and Esso (which still exists Internationally) So Exxon basically went full circle by operating under 3 different banners
When I visited Toronto. I saw a lot of Esso stations. Esso is all over Canada 🇨🇦 from Vancouver Island to the Maritime provinces. They also have Esso in Europe as well. ExxonMobil owns the Esso name which stands for Standard Oil.
Yes, I’m still worried that EXXON name may take over completely, at least in the U.S.A., on google maps I’m now seeing the EXXON name indicating locations for Mobil as well as EXXON. Also sad that EXXON’s ‘tiger’ and MOBIL’s red horse ‘pentigas’ (?) is almost extinct.

I was born in the 90s so never got to know Esso/Enco/Humble. But I read, when I was a spry young filly, about how Esso changed its name to Exxon in 1972 (it didn’t say anything about Enco/Humble). At the time, I went to a school that was out in Georgia farm country. There was a farmhouse or something on our route, with an antique Esso pump. (Another one had an antique Gulf pump.) I thought it actually was a gas station and we were the only place that still had Esso. Ah, delusions of Esso grandeur in Who Cares, Georgia. (Not the town’s real name.)
Georgia was an Enco state. Standard belonged to Chevron (SO California) which bought out SO Kentucky in the early 1960s. SO New Jersey (Esso) felt jilted because they retailed through SO Kentucky in the Southeast and thought they had first refusal rights. So they tried to expand the Esso brand into places like Alabama, Georgia and Florida but were chased out through civil litigation... which led to gas stations in those states adopting the Enco brand. I remember seeing a barn in Alabama painted with "Esso"... perhaps a relic of that unsuccessful campaign. To this day, there is a Standard station in Miami's Little Havana... branded solely to defend the trademark against any encroachments by ExxonMobil.

Supposedly, Humble Oil almost decided to use "Enco" in all 50 states until someone pointed-out to some top executives of the company that "Enco" meant "stalled car" in Japanese! "Esso" is a phonetic spelling of "S.O.", as in Standard Oil, and thus couldn't be used in areas served by other Standard Oil companies (all of which were spun-off in a major anti-trust action during the early 1900's). Outside the United States, "Esso" is still widely used. If Exxon/Mobil were ever given the okay to use "Esso" in all 50 states, would they change "Exxon" back to "Esso"?

I wish they would! I'm 58 now, and remember fondly the Esso brand. I'm a lifelong West Virginian, one of the "Esso" states. Two of the states bordering me Ohio and Kentucky, were Humble and Enco territory, respectively. Part of the southwestern corner of my state borders Ohio and Kentucky, which in turn border one another. Back in the day, I'll bet one could've gotten Esso, Enco, and Humble without having to travel more than 5 miles.
Also, I read somewhere many years ago that Enco meant "ENergy COmpany." The capitalizations were for the purpose of pointing that out. An acronym of sorts.

I remember the advertising posters at Enco stations in FL, and Esso in MA. They showed the Tiger putting up the new Exxon sign, with the old Enco/Esso sign on the ground. I was only in 1st grade at the time, and thought it was so cool.
MrCzechers Yes in Michigan when Arco took over the Sinclair stations, they did similar but with the attendant first on a latter with the ARCO sign and then a month letter the attendant climbing down with the Sinclair sign. I thought that was clever also although I did miss the Sinclair sign and Dino.
Like all of you, I was an elementary school squirt when all this gas station name changing was going on. Didn't understand it back then and even today I don't see why Exxon can't go back to Esso. That's what it's called everywhere else in the world.

Still think this was a mistake.. You got rid of a very well known and loved brand..people were loyal to those brands.. When you kill the brand name, you kill the loyalty
Me, too. I've lived in West Virgina all my life (to be 59 years) next June, and how fondly I rember it. However, one of my dad's best friends owned a gas station that changed brands every few years; neither Esso nor Exxon was among them. West Virginia was an Esso state.
The "EXXON" name SUCKS! they should have rebranded all of their gas stations across the U.S to "HUMBLE" and renamed the oil company "HUMBLE OIL CORPORATION"
