I remember when the David Kats thing happened. The most awkward and funny thing about the whole thing was when Fox News had a debate panel. One of the people on the panel was passionately arguing how video games cause violence and wanted simulated gun violence out of real life tournaments. Then when she learned that Madden was a football game, she was left speechless.
The "What did he shoot me with" line is chilling. The victim probably hoped it was a prank or he was using BBs or rubber bullets and held on to that hope.

DoubleLift's story is heartbreaking. I can't imagine what he felt when he first received the news, then still went on to compete in the finals a week later and win. Just overwhelming emotions. Glad to see he's doing well today.
The heartbreaking part of it is, is that his parents were not very supportive or caring parents. Of coarse, That doesn't excuse murder. For those who also don't know how the justice system works here in Brazil: there is no life-sentence here, the maximum time you can get in jail, no matter the crime, is 40 years. Also no matter the gravity of the crime, there is a chance of you never complete your sentence, ex: Elize Matsunaga, a woman who killed her husband in several pieces, stuffed it inside of a luggage and then tried to burried it, got 19 years and 11 months but was release after completing only 10 years and now works as an Uber, another example is a goalkeeper from an huge team here in Brazil (Flamengo) called Bruno Fernandes das Dores de Souza (aka. Goleiro Bruno) who was arrested on the charges of homicide, concealment of corpse (via making his two dogs eating the corpse), kidnapping and false imprisonment of his own ex-lover Eliza Samudio, which was alleged pregnant of his own child, he got 23 years and 1 month but only completed 10 years and now keeps playing as goalkeeper in a small soccer team and lives like nothing has happened. That's Brazil for ya, the only crimes that's guarantee of death is whatever is related to child and since even the officers knows about how useless these sentences are, they usually announce to everyone what kind of crime you committed before put you in a cell.
If you look up details of the Dota story, the state of Joshua's body was so gruesome. That year he died, many other teenagers were killed by police. Forensics recently revealed foul play. Appreciate wavy adding sociopolitical context. Many poor kids here play games as an escape.

Man the last story was such a tragedy and an embarrasment to my countrys authorities. I lived in the same town as him for 21 years before migrating to canada. Police will kill "alleged" drug suspects just to meet their quota so they can get promoted. This is rather true because the Police can't do s*** unless you gave them money and/or your popular like celeb/politics. That's the time they will take actions. Looks like their Quote "To serve and Protect" is no longer apply to them. The officials says that they want things in proper yet they are covering up the truth just to keep their image clean.
God I wasnt expecting to see Doublelift's story here since he wasnt the perpetrator but given the nature of some of the other coverings that are on the video I suppose its to be expected. Yeah penguinzo just dropped a video about a guy who was asked to not vape around a child, and he went on to stab the man who asked, in front of his child and he died. Something as simple as asking someone to chill on the vaping.
Just a quick note: In the Call of Duty case, it was stated that Guilherme only avoided life in prison due to his mental health situation. In Brazil, we do not have life sentences. No one can be in prison for more than 30 years at a time.
I'm not Brazilian, but I've read that there are ways of judges to make exceptions to that rule in very extreme cases, is that right? This is probably not considered an extreme enough case, but a gang leader for example.
That last story is truly chilling… knowing what kind of power any police force has to fabricate lies to lean the story into their favor is one of my biggest fears of this world. An addendum about the Jax Landing: The Landing wasn't demolished because of the mass shooting. The Landing had long been neglected and experienced declining revenue and tenet turnover. There were also safety concerns and inadequate security. Highlighting the Jax Landing's neglect, GLHF Game Bar wasn't a legal establishment. It was a small backroom in Chicago Pizza at the Landing with minimal egress, with PCs lined against the window and numerous booths with consoles. Organizers had to ask people to leave during the tournament because there wasn't enough space for everyone. @@poisonouslead85 Yeah, but I don't think it would apply to his case (in brazil at least). The state can also hold indefinitely criminals who are considered a permanent threat to society, but its mostly used only in high-profile cases, such as serial killers or leaders of criminal organizations.
I’m glad both are serving time, but it’s NUTS to me how the teenage girl who pulled out a gun and killed someone without hesitation got just 40 years, and the man who actually didn’t kill anyone got LIFE in prison. Wild.
Plea deal. Basically, she admitted to everything without further fuss in favor of a reduced sentence. Further, she was underage at the time despite being tried as an adult, and courts tend to be more lenient in such cases. It says something that despite the plea, she got *40* years. That is very likely going to be more than half her entire life. If that was the plea deal, the *reduced sentence,* she may very well have been facing life herself...or possibly even the death sentence.
plea deals can seem fucked up but they do serve a practical purpose in the court system. it encourages people to admit to their crimes which helps lower the cost of processing a criminal if you don't have to fight a lengthy court battle to prove they're guilty. it also turns criminals against each other by appealing to their selfishness. you can help yourself by ratting out your accomplices. it's not a perfect system by any means and plenty of people get off on light sentences that they shouldn't because of bad plea deals, or plea deals made without all the evidence. but in particular with this case, her plea deal is really bringing out the misogynists who don't know what a plea deal is or how American court systems work. many people are claiming she got a lighter sentence just for being a woman. it's not hard to prove they're wrong but it's nearly impossible to convince people they hold bigoted beliefs and to change them.

I always like the way you finish each story, not just randomly after telling the outcome but kind of finishing the way you opened the story... if anyone knows what I mean. Makes it feel complete.
That last one is so infuriating I really cant even stomach the thought that the police, people who're supposed to protect you can be so cold hearted so easily
tbh where im from, i catch myself being more worried about a police cruiser sitting on a corner than some random vehicle with tinted windows and weed smoke coming out of it.
i feel deeply for ingrid, though all of these stories are ofc very sad. being a "gamer girl" i am sure she faced misogyny daily, so for her to meet up irl with a guy she met from a game, he must have really made her think he cared for her, when really he was planning to take her life all along. her last moments must have been filled with horror, regret, betrayal and fear, not to mention the physical pain... may she and the other victims rest in peace.
So, you sort of told a half story with the first one. Elijah, the first guy he shot, had been constantly bullying David for a pretty extended period of time. That was a pretty big contributing factor as to what lead up to the shooting.
Not that I think he deservered to die and it was a huge tragedy but I noticed that Wavy and GFM both left this out while Coffeehouse Crime went into more details.
As a person from jacksonville, i remember this event. "The landing" the name of the shopping center it was held in, was already a sketchy place and slowly declining as stores closed. This event was basicly the end of the place and now its been bulldozed and a new park put in.
A lot of people who become completely obsessed with gaming are usually looking to escape reality. Whether it be to escape violence, loneliness, abuse, or mental problems, it becomes a way to obtain control in a real-world life that doesn’t seem to have any. When they lose a game, get bullied by other gamers, or have their games taken away by family/parents/guardian, the loss of control infiltrates the only place they considered safe and they can’t handle it. They lash out.
you make a really great point and i would just like to add to it. gamers that get pissed about pronouns and trans people don't realize that games are also escapes for trans people too. if you play a game and it has a gay/trans person or the ability to be gay/trans in it, and your immediate reaction is to rage and cry and kill people over it, it's just demonstrative of the fact that games are only allowed to be escapes from reality for Some people. otherwise it's putting "politics" in games, disregarding the fact that games like metal gear solid, call of duty, or one especially on the nose like spec ops the line are all political games. it's only not okay when it's politics they don't like, when it's the lives of people they would rather not think about.
I was actually watching the madden tourney on stream and was one of the most terrifying things to witness and hear I've ever been through, I still hope everyone who was impacted there have found peace
@@LoominousShroominous I couldn't even begin to imagine what it was like the horror knowing that you could be so close to not seeing the next day. I really do hope every single person that was there has been able to find some sort of closure
There was a really crazy murder in my town in Florida known as "The Xbox Murders" where this no good dude brought a crew over to the house he was squatting at to get his xbox back (he would hide his coke inside) and when they arrived to find a group of highschool friends in the house, they massacred all of them. It was such a crazy ordeal.
I remember seeing pictures of the victims of the Madden shooter and it was super traumatizing how one of the victims was still in his chair when he bled out and died. All that over a damn madden tournament. That's just insane bruh
My brother was supposed to be at that Madden Tournament but he decided not to go. Taylor only lived an hour away from me. It still gives me chills thinking out that. Rest in Paradise.
Lol, the fucking COD Killer: "I had been meticulously planning this murder for 2 weeks" The Plan: 1. Bring girl to house 2. Kill with sword Can't believe it only took him 2 weeks to come up with that.
Here's a couple details you left out for David Katz. Whilst I do not condone his actions. 1. His mother failed him miserably 2. David actually sent a letter to a judge as a cry for help 3. One of the dead, Elijah actively taunted David prior to the situation So no, the shooting was not over a game. David's mental anguish was blatantly ignored by everyone in his life.
The issue between Catz and Clayton wasn't some rivalry over a game that got out of hand. It's best described as years of bullying with Clayton going out of his way to mess with Catz just because he was socially awkward. Examples include Clayton buying a copy of a book that Catz had published and putting it online for free download. Inviting Catz to share a taxi with him after beating Catz at a tournament only to slam the door in Catz's face and drive off. I am in no way condoning what David Catz did but I feel it is important for that fact to be known for context.
While most of theese kind of videos disclaims that theese monsters are rare exceptions in the gaming community. I feel like it's important to say that this also goes for people with schizofrenia as it's is even more stigmatized than gamers. Schizophrenia can couse extreme and delusional paranoia but far from everyone responds to fear with severe violence. You also need to be an agressive person to respond this way.
100%. And especially anyone with a mental illness. Those who have a mental illness are overwhelmingly more likely to be a victim of a mass shooting or shooting in general than to be a shooter. I am extremely glad that mental health in general is becoming more accepted and accessible than it has been previously. But I feel it can be a double edged sword at the same time. I am thankful that you said this. And no one should ever feel shame about getting help as well. Just because you might or do have a mental illness doesn't mean you are a criminal, cruel, or hateful. It means you are a person who has an illness. Just like the cold or the flu and you need help. So please never feel shame in reaching out.
@@Fifjfnfnfjfhdjdjdjf People with schizophrenia is the better term. People with disabilities, not disabled people. "Schizophrenic" can be perceived as a slur.
@bdarecords_ I'm aware. I'm schizophrenic myself and use that term because I'm sick of the fact that having this illness is perceived as something you have to distance yourself from by putting a "have" or "with" in before the illness (I'm schizophrenic vs I have schizophrenia). "Schizo" might be perceived as a slur, but the schizophrenic/person with schizophrenia thing is in my experience more about some people wanting to separate themselves from their illness (which is perfectly valid by the way, it's just that I'm not one of them) in a they "have" and illness, they aren't their illness kind of way. I've also heard plenty of people with disabilities refer to themselves as disabled. In the end it just depends on the individual and what they're comfortable with. Sorry this got a bit long, I just wanted to explain myself.
Agree. Is stupid how she, the one that scalated everything to that point is allowed to have a reduced sentence compared to the pdrson who planned a robbery, not a murder. But those are the bias of the legal system.
It’s a messy case. She was definitely groomed by her “boyfriend” at as early as age 15, so he honestly might have convinced her to be willing to do that.
She took a plea deal. You realize those are usually more lenient in the punishment because you’re saving the time money involved with the actual trial, and most likely she was also helping the case against her BF who took it to court.
doublelift's story is so heartbreaking, during the tournament they were doing the Netflix documentary "7 days out" at around 12:30 ish in the documentary, you actually see him checking his phone and finding out what happened and trying to make a phonecall. It's fucking sad.
God, the David Kats situation, this was my city. It's really eerie when Facebook gives you the option to mark yourself as 'safe' when it's not hurricane related. The Landing (where this happened) has been town down a few years ago.
