The late Dale Winton narrates a compilation of disastrous moments from TV game shows including the woman who broke her leg and still finished third on The Krypton Factor.
As since because this was recorded after 9pm, there is some strong language which could offend some viewers.

The woman who decided not to go on a date with Rodney Alcala (serial killer) because something about him seemed “off” even after she did initially choose him from a group of multiple blind date bachelors, is a flawless example of how following your instincts and intuition can save your life! 🙌

you guys have to understand the mind of a serial killer... which is extremely hard if not impossible sometimes. the sheer audacity that he went on TV knowing he's a serial killer... how can a game show in the 60s-70s do a "background check for serial killers?" seriously... the was back when the CIA was just starting its department of Behavioral Studies Unit. well shown in Mind Hunter (s)

No. Teatime isn't when we drink tea. It's when we eat dinner in the evening. Also known as supper. It's more often said in the Northern regions of England. However, drinking tea is having a cup of tea, having a cuppa. Afternoon tea is kind of drinking tea but eating biscuits, cake, or sandwiches at the same time. I'm still waiting to hear a different American word for Mother. Dearest, perhaps?

The poor girl who had no right answers was IMHO a classic example of one of the three classic categories of fear or trauma as a reaction to fear. Everyone is familiar with fight or flight. But there are actually three classic fear responses, fight, flight, or freeze. She appeared to be in some kind of fear response (my guess anyway) where she could not remember her French, her Italian, or really respond to the questions other than to stay frozen and say "pass". That is how it seemed to me, less of her being dumb, and more of a contestant being frozen in a classic fear response. Her brain was in what is commonly called the "deer in the headlights" response where the deer sees that danger coming but is frozen and cannot move. The part of her thinking that would allow her to respond was that deer. People think that everyones fear response should be the same that, if she was so scared she would have been shaking, eyes wide open, etc. But, some people go into a response in reaction to a traumatic situation as I think she did of going into her best "nice girl" presentation of herself thinking that if she kept smiling and doing her best to give polite but very short answers she could make it through. It seemed to be her way of coping with being frozen.

It is heartbreaking that these poor women were desperate for so little. Shameful that people who knew them had not helped them! The woman needing a gurney... Just tears out your hesrt - and worse, so long ago, there is nothing that could be done, now, to fix it. I knew a very old women who lived on a rural property in Western Australia, that had a drunken husband who used to beat her up, who thankfully, died when she was still relatively young, but with children to look after - no social security - and to my horror, she said the neighbouring farmers - not all, I hope, and tradesmen, would come around wanting s ex - and pretending to offer to help and stealing stuff from her. What an incredibly great collection of Game Show fails! Well done!! I had never heard about that Dating Game contestant that was a serial killer. Thank God that girl never went out with him - she clearly would have been another victim. How chilling! Other segments of this video I found fascinating were: Queen for a Day - I barely remembered that show growing up (I was very young) but it's shameful how they put those poor women on to tell everyone how sad their lives were and how desperate they were to win, then exploiting them by an applause meter to tell the show whose story was the saddest! Another good one: Concentration - I've never heard such a convoluted set of rules that that! Concentration went on to become a popular game you would buy in the stores, and a lot of fun to play. Loved the guy that would bring a "turkey" to the beach, and always loved how Steve Harvey handles family's stupid answers on Family Feud. Really great stuff! I thoroughly enjoyed it all - and will actually re-watch this a few times. Very entertaining! Thank you.

2:13:51 What's My Line was one of the first big game show hits on American television. The original weekly run lasted for seventeen years, most of it being on Sunday nights. The show actually coined the term "Is it bigger than a breadbox?", which was asked by presenter/comedian Steve Allen. One time, in an effort to stump him, they actually got someone who made breadboxes for a living. On a couple of occasions, they managed to get UK host Eamonn Andrews to sit on the panel. He even once had to fill in for regular host John Charles Daly.
@marcpower4167
@marcpower4167 9 месяцев назад
There was an incident that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned. Given what's my line aired live, it's surprising how rarely things went wrong. During a mystery guest segment with Melinda Mercouri, some random guy ran up on stage and interrupted proceedings, Host John Daly had to ask producer Gil Fates to get the "relieving unit" (as he called it) and called for the code to mute the microphones, Gil & announcer Johnny Olsen ran on and escorted the man off before turning him over to security. The man was trying to get in a free plug for his dating service. There was another "intruder" case where some guy ran on stage after Milton Berle's mystery guest segment, he shook Milton's hand giggled and said "I finally made it on mother's day" before taking off again. John looked confused, Milton joked that it was his agent. According to Gil Fates he was arrested outside the studio and spent the rest of his life in an insane asylum. As far as that mystery guest game went For the entire run the secret "emergency plan" if a guest didn't make it in or whatever was for John Daly himself to be the mystery guest. They never had to enact it. For fun on the final show John was the mystery guest. He revealed that he was the backup plan ever since the series began and although they never needed to do it they had several "close calls" including one guest who arrived 1 minute before they had to go on.

That's a typical case of idea fixation, she heard "won an award" and she thought of an Oscar, so the movie title came to her mind as the answer... I've seen that happen a lot with board games with my family: an idea gets stuck and they can"t process the right answer.
@Si74l0rd
@Si74l0rd 8 месяцев назад
@@shamsqasr6173 Yeah. Has to do with the way we parse text or instructions too. I saw a TikTok of a mom trying to hand a pan to her son, and she kept saying "the bottoms hot" so he repeatedly went to lift it from the bottom, rather than the side handles that weren't hot. If she'd have said use the handles, that's most likely what he would have done, but she made the bottom the focus and as he wasn't really paying attention, that's what he went for. Similarly with telling kids not to do something, they hear and process the something, rather than the not. So it's better to say "do something else", rather than "don't do that something", then there's no room for misinterpretation. I think some quiz shows word things in a certain way in order to promote focus or fixation on the initial part of the question, and hide the key part in the last few words. Regular quizzers get used to specifically paying attention to the wording and phrasing. Plus nerves and anxiety can empty your brain in seconds lol. I feel sorry for her, but the point of having two people is to act as a counterbalance in cases where one person's mind goes to the wrong place, and the boyfriend was just a lump of wood. Zero input. So I kinda blame him more, he doesn't even need to know anything about Justin Timberlake to help out, and prevent the catastrophe. But he just doesn't bother at all. That's the craziest bit to me. Trust and believe in your partner for sure, but verify with common sense!

Couple of years ago I came off my board at the bottom of a hill at about 35mph, broke six ribs and broke my right arm in a couple of places. Jumped up after sliding twenty feet, picked up my shopping and my board with my broken arm, and walked home, about 15 minutes away. I pulled a muscle in my leg and that was a niggling pain on the way home, but that was as much as I really felt at the time. Even if you don't break ribs, compression of the rib cage never feels good, but it didn't feel any worse than a normal smackdown on concrete. About 4 hours later the ribs really began to hurt, and I still couldn't use my right hand properly. I didn't have any grip strength, and it was still painful, so I figured I'd cracked something somewhere. The ribs were bad by the next morning so I went to the hospital. I'd landed with my clenched fist between my ribs and the tarmac, so my ribs had suffered a lot more deflection than they normally would, consequently causing a lot of damage. And a few days later it ended up being a flail section, a depressed piece of ribcage pushed into the lung, but before I could get back to hospital I sneezed and it reset it thankfully. Though the pain of that was not masked by adrenaline, and is definitely in my top ten for moments involving pain. Must have clipped a nerve when the section went back into place because it felt like someone had grabbed my nipple with hot pliers for a second lol. But yeah anyway, you can get up and function fine for a short time if it's not a break that causes immediate structural failure. But when the adrenaline wears off it'll probably hurt a lot more than if you'd immediately rested it or sought medical attention. I've broken my wrists so many times I don't usually bother going to the hospital for that, same if I've just got a minor fracture, but it does take a little longer to heal like that. For me it's just practicality, I walk with a cane, so I can't have a cast on and still use a cane, so I just try and reduce the weight it has to bear and live with it. I'm in my late forties now and I don't heal as fast as I used to. Adrenaline covers a massive amount of pain and trauma though, for a while at least. But in the end you have to pay the piper.

I knew every single answer to every single question BEFORE the answers were even revealed. My mom jumped up off the couch as they got farther along saying How do you know all this? And I wish I knew. It was just random trivia I knew that happened to all be on that list. The thing is that the person got all the way to 3 from the million and lost. I never know what those final 3 would be or if "I would have won" it. I only remember 1 question from that show and it was (paraphrasing because I don't know the exact wording) Who flew too close to the sun with wings of wax or What Greek character flew too close to the sun or something like that. I've wanted to go back and see if I still know all the other answers and will always wonder what the final 3 would have been.

I think when watching the show people don't always realise that the production company does profile their competitors so the farther away you go to the million you are more likely to get questions in fields you are not familiar with. So if you feel that the questions are easy and you could have won a million when watching the show those are not the questions that would probably be presented if you were on the show. The game show is quite tailored for every contestent.

That is not the case with the original UK version for sure. They have a set of questions that is set in advance. Two complete potential sets were loaded into a computer and then one of these two sets is sent to the host's screen (chosen at random) without the host knowing which are the correct answers, even the show runners can't know which questions will be asked of which contestant. This, I think, was a special security measure never before used on a UK quiz show, and it was because the prize was the largest ever prize so they were trying to be particularly careful to avoid any possibility of foul play. This extra level of scrutiny was in part how they caught the cheater Major Ingram and his accomplices. With a million quid on the line it would be a temptation for cheating and collusion. @@user-pz8sf8rb8i

Maybe the Mandela Effect should be renamed the Roy Walker Effect. Because, yes, I'm also sure I heard of his death on the news.

At 16:30 the guy says "there's a set of unwritten rules that the contestants are given". Actually, when I went on Countdown no rules were given at all - no instructions about the limits on number of vowels/consonants, nor on the numbers and whether the big/small ones are at the top/bottom. Definitely nothing about preventing rude words.

Unwritten means nobody told you them. It's just inferred by general understanding. Unwritten rules are in no way communicated and thus people do not always pick up on them.

@@Thatguyujustmet "Unwritten" means, as you say, they're commonly understood (but doesn't mean "nobody told you them"). The key part I was addressing is that he said "the contestants are given [the rules]", which didn't happen in my case (even for the 'standard' rules, which I suspect _are_ actually written down).

@@thetoddlanders1992 "unwritten rules" colloquially means a rule you are expected to follow despite never hearing it. the unwritten rule of walking past someone with a camera is to wait for them to take the photo. no one ever says that outlud but we all follow it. its literally a way of saying common sense. you would be told not to swear as thats said to every guest on every tv show. i assume you went on countdown post 1992 as your username would suggest you where probably born then. you woud have to be 18 to go on and by 2010 the rules on what is considered rude would have changed and theyd be able to digitally edit letters if it spelled something really rude. by that point they also had plans for the spin off which was massively intended for an adult audience. theyd also probably decided that no children would actually be sat down paying any attention to a letters and numbers game. a rule that was true at the time wouldnt nesacarily be true now,

I went on in 2007. No rules, unwritten or otherwise, were given - whether about the game or about what to say/not say on camera.@@ThePurpleCheesecakeZebra

18:00 Lingo got to be popular for a bit in the early to mid 2000s when brought to America. It aired on Game Show Network for a while, and the host was veteran presenter Chuck Woolery. There were some interesting misspellings from time to time on the show.
