So the answer is "can he hang a door" is dependent on if the van doors can be opened and be started/moved!

You don't need to cut the hardware screws, those aren't cut slots, those are scores so you can just snap the screws at those points using two sets of pliers.

Exactly correct! They are ideal in a situation where the thickness of doors vs drawer fronts varies when installing kitchen hardware.

@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 3 года назад
It depends. That used to reliably be the case but these days, so many of the included-screws that looked like the ones Scott had will just bend inconsistently. They don't have scored sections, they just have gaps in the thread. Even using side-cutters can be a mission on those ones.

Scott, little tip for those handle screws.... lock it into your power drill and then place a hacksaw against the Desired length and let the drill do the rest👍🏻
@tobybrownrigg2352
@tobybrownrigg2352 2 года назад
Scott and Paul, even more of a tip! You can get small bolt cutters that will easily and cleanly cut the screws, if they don’t have the notches like in this video then you put the screw in your drill and run it along a file to get rid of the burs. I used to build hospitals and apartment buildings and that was a life saver!

He did a great job of it, but like most builders he obviously doesn't do it enough (prehung doors are the norm now) to do it the most efficient way. I was forced to do it a lot because my small town suppliers in Tokoroa didn't stock prehung doors. My process is as follows: I first cut the vertical jambs exactly the same length, leaving the offcut for later. Then I set the door on it's edge (my saw horse has a way of holding it like that) and I make marks at 150, 990 and 1780. Then I bring out my router jig that I made, and place it on my marks and buzz out the hinge slots, which takes about 30 seconds. Then I quick clamp a jamb to the door with 3mm overhanging at the top end, and mark EXACTLY where the hinge slots are. Unclamp and repeat the router process on the jamb. Then I pre drill the screw holes and mount all the hinges to the door and jamb. Then I lay the door on the saw horses and I measure abd cut the head jamb, which is door width plus 2x3mm plus 2x jamb thickness, a couple of extra mm doesn't hurt. Then I glue, pre drill and screw the jamb head to the hinge jamb so the head jamb sits on TOP of the hinge jamb and is screwed into the end of it. I then carefully repeat the process with the lock jamb, and this is the only time I need to set the gap between the door and the jamb. And it's ready to install. Its much easier and better to install the head jamb on top, not between the vertical jambs. Mitering jambs should be avoided unless its a fancy one piece. I also mark using a knife and try not to rely on my tape measure because I don't like fighting to get the hinges on because I'm slightly off. Builders pencils can throw measurements off a lot, and the finished product is seen. My process takes about 15 minutes if my tools are out, and my results are usually superior to the factory prehung doors. It's cheaper than a prehung too, but only because I'm good at it. Oh and the key to fast routing with a jig is to get a 12.7mm router bit that's got a bearing above the cutter. They are difficult to find in NZ for some reason, but are available in the crappy Ryobi router jig kit. Throw away that jig, it's not accurate, it's meant for American hinges and it only works on doors not door jambs. It will however give you the idea of how the jig should work. My jig is just two pieces of wood fixed together at right angles with a 90mm long hole in it the same size as the hinge mortise. I just place it on the door and hold onto it firmly. No clamps required. Unfortunately the art of door hanging is going by the wayside. But if you're a carpenter who does a lot of older home renovations, and you're driven to get the absolute best quality possible, doing it yourself is better and sometimes the only way imo.

Hey Scott! Thanks for another exciting video! Got a good tip for screw trimming. Use a pair of decent miniature bolt cutters. No sparks and super quick. Nothing else needed if they have the thread seperation bits... If you have to cut through the thread, pop the screw in your drill chuck and run it full speed while you file with a bastard file at 45° to deburr the thread. Hope it's useful for anyone.
