Today we tackle Trader Vic's Grog from the 1960's and try and answer the question: What The Hell IS Grog?? Well strap on in fellow Barflies, the history of grog is Fascinating. What I don't touch on much in the video is that Grog has become a category of Tiki drink done and done again at just about every Tiki bar in the world. It has very little resemblance to the what an original grog was, but it's nice that no matter what is in a "grog" or what makes a grog a grog, that this class of cocktail carries with it the fascinating history of not only the traditional drink, but of rum itself.

On the ABV of naval rum, "full proof" was the lowest ABV at which gunpowder would still ignite if it became soaked with the rum (because that could happen if the rum barrels burst during naval warfare). That was the definition of 100 British proof (still used as a measurement in Jamaica and India, I believe), and it's just below 115 US proof (just below 57.5 ABV).

@@jazzmane6171Only made this once it was the first drink so I am pretty sure I remember correctly. I didn't measure when I made it, so roughly the juice from half a pink grapefruit, quarter blood orange and half a lemon, I used about a shot and a half of Mt Gay Barbados Rum and a barspoon of homemade falernum. Shook on large peice of tempered ice till disolved and then over ice filled glass, it got a beautiful frothy head too. As if it had pineapple juice. Not sure which ingredient caused that. If you have it you can garnish with pineapple sage.

As a big fan of rum, this was great. I've been wanting to get more into tiki drinks but often feel like I just dont' have all of the ingredients necessary. This is just rum, fruit juice and bitters (which I have for my old fashioneds) so I am definitely going to be making some grog this weekend! Also, the history stuff is super enjoyable.

no foot locker for most sailors they would wrap there belongings up in the hammock during the day , more senor sailors would get a sea chest but most people had a sack and a hammock ( think belongings being to shirts , pants , soaks , one belt hat , waist coat , sea coat , knife , boots , pipe , razor , ) for total possessions

I made Grog with Navy Strength Gin recently to mark the anniversary of "Black Tot Day" when the british navy stopped giving out the daily tot of booze - it was only stopped in 1970!
@darrenandtinasale1502
@darrenandtinasale1502 3 года назад
Navy strength comes from Gin. Plymouth Gin made Gin for the Navy, the Higher strength was flammable and stored in barrels next to the gunpowder. If the gin leaked into the gunpowder it would still ignite. The lower strength gin would not allow the gunpowder to ignite.

I would also like to see a video about that but he do say "3 parts passion fruit and 1 part sugar" in the video so I guess thats it. Due to price I usually go for the frozen cubes and make beachbum berry's passion fruit syrup (google it). Smugglers cove has a passion fruit syrup made from puree and with twice the sugarcontent - these are probably two of the most widespread recipes out there but also quite different in taste I would imagine.

Another issue they had with their rum rations is that a lot of men would hold off drinking those daily rations, and instead save them. So they’d end up drinking a whole days rations, or more all at once. Then they’d be completely gooned, way more so than if they’d just had their regular 2x daily rations when they should have.
