Back in July 2021, Will from our team went on an adventure.... his target was the Eddystone Lighthouse, 16km directly out to sea from the Cornish coast.
The Eddystone light house is a remote and difficult place to get to by SUP. Will's Vlog documents how this trip, that had been on his bucket list for years unfolded, including how it unexpectedly ended up on the Jeremy Vine Show on BBC Radio 2.
The trip required some careful planning, a perfect forecast, good safety gear and safety backup as well as an experienced team. If you are interested in touring or adventuring on your SUP watch the vlog and learn how you too can work up to an expedition like this.

I watched to the end and you actually addressed my point which was this. If the caller to the radio was really concerned about you he should have contacted the coast guard himself. If he had he’d have found out they were aware of what you were doing. Goes to show who was really the sensible and responsible party!

So true Rex. It's baffling that he thought we might be in trouble, but just didn't ask. We need to be more open and communicative on the water. Cheers, Beau

I’ve been far out at sea at Saltburn, had a fishing boat come over to ask if I was ok 👍 I was but it was nice that they were just checking on me, rather than phone Radio 2 and make a big deal of it

Hey Leigh, good to hear from you. Yes positive that this fisherman was keeping an eye out for others at sea. Really positive approach. Keep safe and happy paddling. Will

I live in the salish sea's, In British Columbia. Island hopping on my SUP is what I do all summer. See some whales at times. Obviously always dangerous when out at sea no matter what craft one has. Be safe! have fun out there!

Looks like such a beautiful adventure. Goes to show people will hate on anything they dont understand or anything new. Happened with snowboarding at first and now its just an accepted snow sport. I just dont like the negativity and immediate judgement of some people! Get curious, ask questions, dont just judge as though you know.

It’s interesting that many people don’t have an open mind about new sports or trends. Embrace everything! Thanks for your comment. Beau

Amazing trip and great info about this lighthouse. I'm from Finland and we have several old lighthouses to protect seafarers from (in)famous archipelago and rocks arounf Finnish coast. They are great part of the maritime history and has been instrumental for safe sea trade in the past. This was really inspirational video - next summer I have plans to visit some of our lighthouses close by - the ultimate would be Kasuuni in front of Helsinki. Keep on posting these great inspirational videos of your adventures!

Love the video mate, a kayak sail can help you out when you get tired they take up very little room and are very light. Winds at sea often mirror the tide movement usually at their highest mid tide going in or out. The winds usually die down during high or low tide. Use the wind and tide information and time your run. Have fun out there.

Thanks for tip Bob! Great idea. We are thinking of using wings as well when the wind picks up, but luckily we scored a glassy day on this paddle. Many thanks

Excellent. I couldn't do it as I am a novice on a SUP, but I have been out round the Farne Islands in a sea kayak. Its a shame people without any knowledge see fit to judge. Then of course the downside of social media kicks in.

They don't understand the idea of paddleboarding at BBC? Well, it's a sport that anyone can learn, develop skills and technique, and eventually go on professionally prepared trips like yours. I don't understand how someone can sit in a broadcasting cubicle, talk to the wall all day, and judge people... :P I'm a kayaker and I face lots of hate as well: from swimmers, sailors, and fishermen - trying to stay away from all of them. Great trip and video guys. Lots of awesome experience out there.

Thanks Tom, so funny to think they get paid to have an opinion on something they’ve never tried or know about! We have seen some BBC stories that are good for SUP and know they aren’t all bad. Thanks for your comment. Beau

Great adventure! Which board has done best job?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 2 года назад
Thanks ! The composite Naish Maliko was probably the best on the downwind return trip as it picked up the glides nicely....but its done side was it was really hard to secure any gear bags to it.... The 26 wide airline became very hard to handle in the side chop and the 12'6 generation was great for the trip but perhaps a little short to really pick up bumps on the downwind part. Cheers, Will - SUPboarder

I'm curious about your selection of boards, I was surprised to hear most of them are very narrow race type boards. I thought for touring you would want a 30"?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment - Most of the paddlers took narrower boards as these are a lot faster - all the paddlers were very experienced and confident on these narrower boards so it was a no brainer really. The 26 inch wide airline was a little challenging on the downwinder and I think in hindsight a 28 wide airline would have been better for Gavin. Cheers, Will

I was curious also, get the 26’ but was wondering why not hardboards for speed… unless it’s the same as me where I smack 30 rocks before I get in the water 😅 . Incredible vid by the way, very local to me and really inspiring

Started paddling at 7:49am and finished 8 hours later. Average was 4.54km/ hour. There was no auto pause on the tracking so this included stopping time. All the full information is on GeoSUP, within the profile of 'Will SUPboarder' - the session is called 'Eddystone Challenge!' - Cheers, Will

Just goes to show how truly judgMENTAL some people are that have no idea about situations. To the dude that called in to the radio station spewing garbage: who’s to say YOU being out on boat that far out isn’t “dangerous” as well?? Maybe because you’ve been out on your boat MANY times & know what YOU’RE doing… and have all possible safety precautions in place in the event something DOES goes wrong. So, why assume these paddle boarders aren’t equally as prepared… maybe even BETTER prepared than YOU?? In fact, let’s take it a step further and say you sprung a leak in your boat… and it sinks. Now your stuck floating on top of the water with your life jacket on… waiting on a rescue boat to come pick you up…. OR, since these SUP’ers have radios & are already known to be out by the coast guard, the authorities politely ask THEM for assistance in coming to pick you up & tote you back to dry land!! People are so judgmental and arrogant.., and just ASSUME too much before they really know any details! Then they take it a step further & try to turn others against you or what you’re doing. Weak-minded foolish people will go along with the blabber-mouthing…and usually join in. Ridiculous! FYI: I live on the beautiful island of Okinawa, Japan & I’m an avid SUP’r. I LOVE boarding all around the different areas of the main island… and smaller off-shore islands. BUT, I know my own limits and won’t typically venture out further than my own skill set & personal abilities allow. I’ve twice tethered others to my board & toted them in when they got stuck too far out and they ran out of energy to paddle back in. So, paddle ON & just ignore those who choose to judge you & situations they know nothing about. Most often, people like that just want attention and are deflecting their OWN ignorance about certain things onto others. Let them be… and live your best life! 😎👌👌 PS: THX for the vid. Looks like an AWESOME trip!!

Hey Rebecca - yep a little JudgeMENTAL I agree. As a paddling community we all need to look after each other. Feeling comfortable Intervening when we see something unsafe should be in our culture - equally if someone picks you up on a possible safety concern anyone should see it as a positive thing - sometimes that can feel embarrassing but it isn't at all - we are all watch out for each other. Good to know you are a fan of SUPboarder in Japan - don't forget our SUP Safe series is now available that you can use to share in your paddling locations to help prevent people getting into difficulty. The only way we will make paddling safer is to work as a community to share good practices and guide people to good quality knowledge. supboardermag.com/supsafe/ Join our mailing list here for notifications of more awesome content mailchi.mp/supboardermag/social-sign-ups

Sorry but this is silly and promoting this kind of trip will lead to the inexperienced getting into trouble. It doesn’t matter how good at paddle boarding you are, the sea is a changing beast, weather forecasts are often underestimated and being this far off land could of easily ended up in trouble. It doesn’t take much wind at all for the sea to build that far offshore, a SUP simply isn’t a suitable craft for this kind of trip. Really like the channel, I own two paddle boards myself but as a chief officer in the merchant navy working round the UK coast I know all too well what the sea is capable of.
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 2 года назад
Thanks for your insights and comment Paul. The sea certainly is a changing beast and respect for her is needed. As a group of very experienced sailors and paddlers with decades of experience, the team took the correct safety precautions and had back up plans in place on this particular paddle. We're not trying to promote this trip at all, just inspiring paddlers to explore a little further with the right safety nets in place. We're glad that you have pointed out this trip is not for beginners or even intermediate paddles though. Thanks, Beau
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment Paul. Inexperienced paddlers 100% should not attempt an expedition like this and the video explains some of the risks involved and what level of safety precaution needs to be taken to mitigate these risks - its about inspiring adventure and clarifying the planning and safety precautions needed. My aim for this video was to help people understand that they cant just blindly go out there, you need to build up experience and plan. Humans are programmed to explore and therefore we wanted to use this video as a way of showing how to explore in a safe way. We also wanted to highlight how water users need to look out for one another, for me this was key and I was disappointed with the Fishermans attitude to seamanship on this day. Personally, I have a lot of experience offshore through sailing which put me in a good position to understand the forecast, current conditions and review those continually through the day. I have also been out to the Eddystone many times before on boats and understood what currents and conditions I might face. The forecast this day made it as safe as it could be with all the models agreeing. Like Beau said, thanks for highlighting that this trip isn't for the inexperienced.... but we really hope it helps people understand how they need to respective ocean to keep safe. Cheers, Will
