What happens if you don’t lubricate them? And the service manual I have said to torque at 26ft lbs. but 40 is safe?

Head Studs get 40. OEM Head bolts 26/28. If you do not lube the threads and washer the actual torque will be lower then the wrench is set due to rotational resistance
