Learned something very true working for Rick's Camaro's 67-69 (now part of Year One). Rick once said "...guys will always buy the car they couldn't afford when they were 17-19 years old". After 30 years, I think those words are still so very true.

My younger son's first vehicle was a 1994 Ford Bronco. His older brother began fixing things up on it and ended up buying it from his brother. Solely by researching on the internet, he did a 4" lift on it, then decided it would be better to just change out the Independent suspension for F250 solid axles. Now he bought a diesel F250 we have taken the transmission (he got it rebuilt) and 73 engine out of and we'll be putting those in the Bronco next week. It's going to be a beast. I learned some basic maintenance but never would I have thought of attempting the things he has. He's always had a brilliant mind and this comes very easy to him. I'm his go-fer when I'm around to help. 😏

Hey Wizard, a typical issue with these early Nissan/Datsun EFI engines is the Nissan AFM unit. The spring inside the AFM gets weak/stuck. Give this a try... open the AFM unit and manually push the AFM's throttle counter clock wise while the engine is running, this should allow more fuel into the air fuel mixture and help it run much smoother. You may be able to reset the spring if that works to get the engine running smother. This item often gets misdiagnosed as injectors or timing that can not be corrected. Cheers Rob from Winnipeg.

@@brandonosborne6894 Cool, I'll have to check that out. My 1988 Nissan Stanza has an AFM unit that was causing a stumbling idle and stall when applying throttle. By varying the pitch backwards on the metal weight, more fuel is allowed in to the mix. To loosen up the moving parts and circuitry I used Deoxit, a spray cleaner used in Hi-fi amplifier/radio servicing. Cheers, Rob

Excellent advice, though these early NipponDenso trapdoor style AFMs have a cutoff switch in them that typically kills power to the fuel pump when they fail or are disconnected. Common issue on 86-88 RX7s and I want to say the 84-85 GSL-SE uses the same style but I'm not an expert on first gens. However, that's not happening here. If some injectors are firing but not all, yank the rail and send them off to Injector Rehab for cleaning and flow testing. They're the same style of injector as 86-88 RX7s, even got the same connector, just a different flow rate. S130 Turbo injectors are 265cc/minute, N/A ones are 188cc/minute. for comparison, 86-88 RX7 non-turbo ones are 460cc/minute and FD RX7 injectors are 550cc primary and 850cc secondary. www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/injectors/index.html Injector Rehab charges $18 per injector and they'll be good as new when they're finished. I did it years ago with some 20B Cosmo injectors and they came back dead-on at 550cc, exactly where they should be. FAR fetter than the chinese garbage sold everywhere now.

It's worth it to restore. Vast parts network for supplies. 83, 2+2 technica package with t-tops and 5 speed with the two tone. The missing headliner is nylon fabric. I owned this exact model in blue/silver. It was one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. Fix it slowly. Cliche time: Rome wasn't constructed in 24 hours. This car is a time capsule.

I have an '82 280ZX 2+2, and can answer a few of the interior questions! The front seats are/were the same leatherish material the backs were, the roof liner around the T-top was cloth, but ANY amount of moisture makes it separate quickly. The original stereo actually took up the entire room of that blanking plate, they are cool AF looking and mine still works so I'm keeping it! As for the motor running weird, I found that these things have over a million ways to create new vacuum leaks, even if all the hoses look good (they don't) the plastic splitters tend to crack. If you do get it running long enough to heat up, see if the vent controls work, when I fixed my vacuum issues it fixed that as well.

This car makes sense to bring back to life in two scenarios as far is can tell: if the owner has a sentimental attachment to the car and the money spent is not important; and two if they see this car is an emerging collectible classis. I think this car is in the gray area where it might start to increase in value as Generation X gets older and wants to purchase these cars if it reminds them of their childhood. For those of us that went to high school in the 80's, these cars were highly desirable. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that these cars will start to become collectible. Another example of a car that's tipping into collectible status is the old Volvo 240s. My son works at a Volvo independent, and owners of these cars will spend any amount of money to keep them on the road. Many long term owners of these cars are getting them completely mechanically rebuilt. The shop itself buys these cars used, fixes them up and sells them for large profits.

I had three164 Alfas over ten years. Never needed a spring or a door seal. They cost no more to look after than most cars. I had five Alfas in total spread over nearly 20 years and only one breakdown in a twelve year old 164 with 150,000 miles on it when the diff went. Needless to say I'd take the 164 every time. They have a galvanised shell from waist level down. That is quality.

Parts can be swapped on these old L series engines from 70 to 84. The power steering bracket actually has a gasket that covers a hole where the early cam driven fuel pump mounted. A carb manifold can be thrown on this car with a few bolts. Lots of fun. I had an 82 with the turbo 2.8. The fan that blows on the intake always cracked me up. Only heard it come on when I was doing autocross. That car looks a little rough but it's not too far gone. Not the most desired Z car but I hope it gets some love.

The bad, they do rust, and the AMF, go,with the t tops, this car is a smile maker, terrible in the winter, but fun fun fun, 83,was best, year, excellent gas mileage, I once got 580miles on one tank with my 5 speed nursing,it. 21 gallon tank, in red gorgeous, looks awesome from any angle, perfect proportions, quality built, buy a southern car, or Cali Arizona, the computer would talk to you, for 1983,that was Kit before, Kit, plenty of parts available, wherever you park it, comments, and stares, almost as much as your smiles. Straight six ,last forever, cost 21,000,new,2+2,plenty of room, for the price of a used civic with a fat muffler with a lawn mower engine, you can get a classic car with prescense and character.Worth saving.💰😥✨💤💔👌🤞

@@TheJensenInterceptor Step down Hudson, when the floorpans are shot the unibody rails are generally also rusted through ahead of the rear axle; if really bad, the car tears apart; so unless it's a convertible or confirmed early Nascar racer not worth fixing. 1957-1959 Chrysler products, the frame rusts out at the rear spring perch and at the kick-up for the axle, and the floors and rockers rust until the car is just about broken in half. A 300, any convertible, Fury, maybe a big engine car is worth repairing, but a four door sedan with a six, is a parts car. Just a couple examples. I have seen cars that sat so long nothing is left of the floors and frame. Wizard, when you said this car wasn't worth much more investment I had to look at what they were selling for. All the Z models have always been very collectable, and the 280 is no different. From the sales I have seen, this car is worth investing at least $10,000 if not more. I'd attack that window frame rust first to make sure it's repairable, and then start the refurb. 👍✌ P.S. when I was 12 in 72, my day drove up in a brand new 240Z, and I was stunned. My parents always bought fancy cars, not sports cars, and I thought I was the Bee's Knees when my dad picked me up from school. 😁Even then, when my dad traded it in on another new car a few years later, he received $1000 more than the original purchase price he payed. These cars are extremely collectable, and this one looks to be perfect for a rebuild project assuming there are no major rust issues.
