When Is It Safe To Switch From A Walker To A Cane

You should start to transition from a walker to a cane when the walker is getting in your way and you are able to use the cane with a minimal amount of force. The cane is really just a way to touch the ground. The cane should not be used to support you as much as increase your awareness of the ground.
Before completely eliminating the walker I would encourage you to consider trialing the cane during the late morning or early afternoon. Spend time at the kitchen counter practicing shifting your weight onto your surgical side.

My therapist Never taught me how to do anything. Just gave me 8 exercises over and over, same ones..for 4months. I had to turn to your U-tube series to teach me. Ur the best!

I'm 2 weeks out from TKR surgery and just yesterday got to 90º flexion. I guess I'm one of the people who every single degree is going to be a battle and victory. Thank you so much for you videos, they have been super helpful in keeping my morale up when I start to get down.

I am not sure why but at PT I only did some leg movements back and forth at the table, walked with the cane sometimes and mostly the bicycle at the same height every session. I am still using mostly the walker sometimes the cane but am not steady at walking without the walker. I had a bone density test and that showed spinal stenosis was starting, i feeling it more now. Thank you for your wonderful and informative video!

Wonderful explanation. Just went through total hip replacement on June 8th...after fighting the pain for 3 years...and the at home therapist says it's his goal to get me on a cane within 7 days, yet I have the same hiccups you're speaking of, having to place way to much weight on the cane...which for for me is a little scary since I now have two artificial hips...a fall would not be good...Its as though his goals are not in my best interest...now matter how many times I convey my struggles to him...I guess it's time to put my foot down...no pun intended 😊 and say enough is enough as I am not at the point of going from walker to cane just yet. Thanks again for the vid and also for being a PT and not putting your expectations on your client.

Wait, what! the cane goes on the opposite of the surgical leg not that I don’t believe you but my home therapist had me using it on my surgical leg side on my first knee replacement. I pretty stunned right now and didn’t question it. I just figured it was on the surgical leg side to almost act as a good leg.
@totaltherapysolutions
@totaltherapysolutions 3 года назад
Unless your home therapist had a reason for it it always goes opposite the injured leg. But maybe the home therapist had a reason for the recommendation.

How long does it take for the average person to stop having stiffness and soreness in the early morning right after waking up. ? It has been 20 weeks since my surgery and I have a very sore and stiff knee early in the morning. Thanks so very much for your help.
@totaltherapysolutions
@totaltherapysolutions 4 года назад
Honestly it is very common for stiffness and pain to persist up to 12 months. Some people do amazingly well after 12 weeks but many take 12 months. Even the same person will experience very different recoveries between two different knee replacements.

Greetings from Calcutta, India. I am very happy with your advice in the video. I had femur bone fracture and post-op I am still using walker after 8 months of the operation. I cannot walk with a cane as I cannot step up correctly. I cannot walk with the cane. Problem is I have pains in the groin (right leg was my bad leg). What can I do? Please suggest.

I haven't had surgery. I decided a walker was necessary on my own bc I couldn't hold up my upper body and walking was almost impossible. I was loosing my mobility. I started watching foods I ate. Started doing core strengthen exercises I was taught & doing research. Then I enrolled in water PT. In Feb 2022. Its May 2022. I can sit better. I can walk better & a little without walker. With lil or no discomfort. But I still have issues of done at long periods of time. Standing in place for more in a min is hard if I'm not moving. I want to be off walker but not rush. Any suggestion. I feel maybe transition to one with wheels might be my next step bc Mine has all tennis balls. I feel like I'll still have the stability I need if needed. But easier to move & it would allow me to build strength. But then i want to go to cane or no cane. I'm ready to divorce my walker. I feel like I walk over it at times. I know I'm on the right path. But when I don't want to rush it and fall backwards or two I don't want to become dependent and not move for trying to balance out. Have any suggestions? I just turned 40 and I am really trying because I still feel quite Young. I want to be able to go to the beach hang out with my friends. Without being troubled by a walker and without pain and discomfort. I think that's on the worst at the end of the day after a long day of moving when my muscles stiffen up and I start to get crampy that is very painful any suggestions on that

I have had a total knee replacement and now my right knee (un surgical) knee is hyperextended and been on a walker for a year. I want to get off it but all braces I used for right knee makes it harder to walk. Any suggestions I would appreciate.
