When should you harvest a Celeste Fig? Here’s how I judge ripeness! This might also work for most other figs, but the Celeste is a common one here in the south.

Best video I've seen for Celeste figs. Choose Jesus Christ today folks!!!

This is exactly what I was looking for in a video to help me to pick my figs. I grew my fig tree in a bucket last year and decided to plant it in the ground late fall last year. I'm not sure if i will get any this year. I did get 12 figs last year in a bucket it grew about 4 ft high. I didn't really know when to pick them so this video is very helpful. Thanks so much!

Thanks for uploading your video. I bought a fig tree from Home Depot and it's 3 season later, has grown from 8'" to a 7 feet high. I wasn't sure what type but by looking at your video, I finally can identify it as a Celeste fig. The fruit size is the same, the immatural and the fully ripe also the same, not to mention the ants are also taking their share of the fruit as the sugar content is so high. Great video!

I agree. This is my second year figgin. It is NIGHT and DAY on ripeness. a simi ripe one is ok even good. BUT, you let it ripen all the way and OMG its like eating jelly.

I am glad I came across this video today. I harvested some recently and was told I did so too soon. Now I see what to look for. I thought mine were getting too soft and were going to rot. Your video helped me see soft is what we want. Thanks for taking time to make the video and to post it.

I have a huge fig tree in southern New Mexico. I rarely get to eat any as the birds and foxes love them. And mine droop when they are still kind of green.

I might do that. I didn't record much of the first batch since it was a practice run with the figs that were not quite ripe. Its good stuff, but relies on sugar and spice more than the fig flavor. If I can get a good crop (meaning what is ripening now doesn't get eaten by my kids, me, the birds and our dog) then I hope to make a video. :-)

Hi👋🏾 New subscriber. I loved fresh figs as a child, but my family always canned them. Would you recommend growing figs in a grow bag to avoid planting in the ground. I know they can grow quite large. This video brought back wonderful childhood memories. Thanks for that!😁
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 5 лет назад
I don't know about a grow bag, but I'm sure it can be done. I grow most of mine in containers, and just keep them pruned back and shaped. You can also un-pot figs every 3-5 years and prune the roots, they need that or they will die in a container. I will be doing some root pruning this year and will post about it, but I'm going to have to read up on when is the best time to do so. Thanks for your comment, and thank you for subscribing!

soak it in water for a day. shave some skin off the bottom. and put it in soil. rooting hormone helps.

How big does your Celeste fig tree grow? Do you keep it pruned to a certain size? I really want to grow one but I wasn’t sure about spacing. Also, can it grow ok if it mostly gets morning sun and partly into the afternoon?
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 2 года назад
I keep my Celeste only as tall as I am so I can harvest everything. They really need as much sun as possible. You can try it where it is and if it doesn't fruit or fails to ripen fruit, dig it up, trim it down small, and pot it, move it to a sunny spot.

Great video, I am a displaced Texan and I have been looking for a Celeste fig tree at my local nurseries but they don’t carry fig trees up here in Ohio. Do you sell fig cuttings?
@ScottHead

In the dormant winter season 2019/2020 I will be selling some. Search Black Gumbo on Facebook and I will be selling through my page.

I actually have a plan to sell some cuttings later in the winter when everything is good and dormant. I don't know if I will get any off that particular plant, but if I do, I'll put you on the list. Email me at blackgumbo@gmail.com. :-)

Rob, I got mine last spring as a 1 or 2 year old plant (don't remember which) at 4 Wind Growers. I did not like the shape it was growing into, so I pruned it back to a 12" stump this spring and its really taken off. : www.fourwindsgrowers.com/store/other-edibles/fig.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=401&category_id=23

Our fig tree which we grew from cutting from my husband's father just started producing this year and we discovered it's a Celetese! So I searched how to figure out how the heck they are ripe and you came up; thanks for the great no nonsense video!

Its only time and patience... wish there was something more I knew to get fruit to ripen. This year my Celeste gave me nothing, just some hard green fruits and then it dropped them all due to drought.
