A slightly different video full of honesty, challenge, frustration, mud, water, erosion, crap, stream beds, rocks the size of houses..........get the picture, lol? Yep I am being honest because this happens to all off- road riders, every now and then. Does it really change our lives???? Well once we've hosed our bikes off, wrecked the washing machine with our crappy kit, it all becomes a great story to tell in the pub (or on here)!
So here's the adventure. It's about a 'young woman' whose head fell off, having left Machynlleth, in search of gravel and single track frolics. Yes she saw incredible scenery, rattled along gravel and grassy tracks, but what she didn't prepare for, was the huge dollop of type 2 fun* Must try harder next time i.e tweak the route!
*type 2 fun = gets better with time.
On a more serious note - the area south of Machynlleth is stunning with masses of opportunity. However a little bit of research and local knowledge goes a long way! When exploring a new area there is always the risk of it going pear shaped. That's part of the fun!? Locked gates on some routes does seem to be a recurring problem......

Cheers Eric. It was weird because once I was off road I saw no one! Its not a place to have a ' little ooops ' thats for sure . Also for a large part of it, you have no phone signal.

Hey Julie, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this adventure; but we, the viewers would never have guessed that. Even when your "Happy-meter" was swinging onto the Sad side; you were still jovial, trying to be positive and chuckling away! I don't think you know what "negative" is..haha! I suppose to have gotten as far as you have in your cycling career; you must stay as positive as possible; especially when it comes to your own abilities. There's no point in competing, if you're not convinced that the possibility of coming close to the top. I'm only assuming here, so forgive me if I'm wrong; but I think that determined positivity is something ingrained in you now. And that's a good thing! Watching any of your posts; including this one; you're often viewed cycling up a very steep hill, legs going around ten to the dozen. Yet still with a smile, a laugh, and managing to talk; where most folk would struggle to breathe! Haha. Your posts are inspiring, fun and informative, all at the same time. I've said it before, but will say it again. I can't help but smile, when watching your posts. And always look forward to the next. Take care Julie 😊

Thanks Tim , for your positive comments (as always) . Dealing with tricky things can be a challenge but taking control; making the correct choices,even when your head’s falling off is actually quite empowering. It’s the ‘nature of the beast’ eh? Re: competing It gives and it takes away sometimes. If you have achieved your personal best it’s time to branch out. There’s so much to do and so little time. I recently read an article by Lee Craigie ( former MTB superstar ) . She said the following which really hits the spot- ‘ there is more than one way to win’ .

Julie, you had 3 of the 4 requirements; food,water and an escape plan. you forgot about the fourth. You need a friend or two to share in the highs and lows. 😅 happy trails.

Capturing the realities.....sometimes things don't go to plan. "Grovelling, not gravelling" made me laugh. MTB definitely the better choice (then again, you knew I'd say that 😂).

Its better to push a light bike than a heavy one lol ! Also its easier to squeeze narrow handlebars through small gaps compared with 'cow horns' lol

I enjoyed the story telling format and the 😊happy meter! Looking forward to the hammerhead review, my Roam v1 is terrible for off road. I would be interested in hearing what safety equipment or measures you take in areas like this. I recently had a injury off road on my own. Made me think about carrying a survival bag
@JuliePhelanExplore

First thanks for your great comments and support- much appreciated. Glad you liked the ‘happy meter’ lol ! So safety measures - I always have an generous e.t.a. with someone (my partner) I am obsessed with the weather forecast and use the mountain weather forecast. Check out this link www.mwis.org.uk/ With reference to the above I always have a good waterproof/ gillet/ arms etc just in case- I do tend to carry a fair few extras plus gels I have registered my phone with the SMS emergency service. It works on all networks ( a positive if you can’t access your own) . Check out this link www.emergencysms.net/ I always carry a good tool kit which includes CO2 canisters plus a small pump just in case there’s a further problem. I do have a very small survival bag. It depends where I am whether I carry it or not. I acknowledge that you can’t ever guarantee personal safety, but I never ride to my technical limit whilst out on my own. I hope these points are useful. Really hope you are well on the way to full recovery. I think this raises a number of issues, but at the end of the day we take a calculated risk eh? Life is for living and the saddest thing is to die having never lived. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but sometimes you’ve got to go for it . Take care . Lovely communicating with you. Julie
