That's what I loved about watching late with Carson and Leno back then. They're never took themselves too seriously, and they weren't political.

He and Carson told political jokes, and they made fun of both sides. The difference with Carson and Leno was that it wasn't mean spirited. Also, they never took it too far, and they didn't personally attack anyone.

Leno made all he could out of Clinton, which was so easy. He quipped in one of his openers in 2000 or so, “I am so going to miss this guy!” As he doubled over trying not to laugh. He may have been even-handed overall but the majority was jokes and skits about Klintoon, which is exactly what he was! One of them was a comparison between him and Nixon. E.g., “couldn’t stop Kissinger/couldn’t stop kissing her” and “nickname Tricky Dick/no change!”

When the rest of the family was asleep late at night I would sit in my hot tub with a big bowl of vanilla ice cream topped in chocolate syrup and watch Jay Leno on cable TV. Nice, relaxing hot tub after a long day, quiet time with everyone else asleep, a monster dessert and the Tonight Show at 11:35 pm. What an incredible time: 1991 was a great year for me!

Actually, Doodles our white longhair cat sleeps on his back with his paws in the air. I've often joked that the only thing missing is his smoking jacket. Obviously not afraid of attack from his companions.

Me too, after Jeno left I stopped watching late night shows. Nowadays, it's all crappy humor, mean, and political. I miss Carson and Leno's shows which were fun and entertaining.

That's what I like about Leno. He made fun of politics instead of trying to talk like an expert or something. He was merciless towards Clinton, and I loved it.

You make a valid point; depending on which hosts, lots of their commentary is spot-on factual, but it’s true that late-night is pretty politics-heavy and can do some lightening up.

I dislike Trump, but all the late night comedians joke about is Trump. He’s low hanging fruit 🍎 and it shows that today’s late night hosts aren’t very talented if that’s all they can talk about. Jay Leno was smart in that he knew better not to joke about politics or politicians too much, or the majority of the TV audience would be turned off and watch something else.

I remember when Johnny Carson used to do this and I used to try to stay up to when he would do this and I left them and when Jay Leno took over I left them too. I appreciate the monologue and the writers are pretty good because I think late night talk shows like Seth Meyers Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon we have to do something to release frustration and political humor is pretty funny. But I do have to say that this was the funniest thing ever😅😅😅 Virtually yes I was LMAO 😅😅

Today's (2024) late night TV is not funny, IS boring, and not worth watching. I was re-runs of old Westerns instead. Far more entertaining. Jay's Headlines and 99-cent store items were the best. He and Kevin were a great team.

You're right, he never ridiculed a Republican even one time. Not a mention of the Orange Cheeto Jesus guy. Not even one mention of the end of humanity known as climate change. There was one bit of praising abortion, single women raising children with the govt as the daddy, not one spoken word of how kick ass women are how they don't need men. There wasn't one word about how Diversity is our Strength. God Damn, what a caveman Jay Leno was and is. I bet he never put his children on hormone blockers, never took them to see a drag show, never took his kids to a gay pride parade. Can you believe that there wasn't even a Gay Pride MONTH LONG CELEBRATION when that cave man was on the air. The media was far more balanced too. Just look how less scripted and politically correct Jay was. IT WAS SO WRONG. Jay's spincter should have been so tight with all of his Democratic agenda driven material. Did Jay Leno not realize that his PLATFORM belonged to the Democrat Party? Was he doing their bidding, probably not too much. God Damn it!!!
