Messi was 19 and he was on the rise to become one of the best.

So the reason was really complicated. He was a rising star but at the time 2 other stars were already established and were in the absolute peak of their powers. Tevez and Riquelme. And because of Messi's unique style of play and position he had to replace one or the other. Then Argentina coach didn't want to do that. Think it this way. At this point in history in Barcelona Ronaldinho was the king. And let's assume messi was playing in the same position. And to have messi play Ronaldinho had to subbed out. Quite impossible right? That's what happened with Riquelme and Tevez. Of course A world class coach would have found a way to have all 3 of them play. But nobody tried that.
