Welcome back to boxing after dark! In today's video, we go back to 1993 to one of the arguably best-ever bouts from the middle-weight division. Julian Jackson Vs. Gerald McClellan really defines when power meets power!
Well I donated. Watched that fight live. One of the best ever. And for that Gerald paid dearly. I get what he did to dogs. But he has suffered enough. I 🙏 the stem cell treatment will help improve the quality of his life.
McClellan was shaking his head continuously following this bout and expressing amazement at Jackson's power. I believe he was damaged by Julian before he even stepped into the ring with Benn.
I liked the ending of this video very much. The right choice to respect Gerald, not indulging on painful footage about how is he now, but meanwhile asking for help for his family and dedicating the video to a true heroin, his sister. You that made this video, you’re quite a man, you touched my heart. My donation is coming. Thank you.
Well put Massimo. McClellan, thankfully, had done enough to earn his HOF status. Just a reminder of how brutal this sport can be, Nigel Benn should not blame himself.
The fact that two legends of boxing fought on Boxing After Dark and not PPV is insane. Couldn’t imagine that as a modern boxing fan where they overcharge for every matchup
Yes in 2023 young fight fans can lap up some youtuber and a supposed pro-boxer/semi youtuber this weekend I think while waiting another couple of years for the possibility of a legitimate heavyweight world title fight in between the circus shows masquerading as boxing.
Wild how much Jackson catches McClellan with no effect. Makes you wonder if his chin allowed him to take flush shots, but the damage was being done in a different way, leading to the Benn outcome.
I agree, not only did GM take heavy headshots from JJ in the first fight, he also took them in infamous & regular sparring sessions in the Kronk. It is noticeable, again, in their first meeting, that GM was exhibiting blinking & pushing out of his gumshield consistent with what was noted in the NB fight; clearly far less frequently, but te signs were there. Previously, this gesturing was thought to be just idiosyncrasies particular to GM, but, in hindsight, more likely indicators of repeated neurological trauma. In his contest with NB, GM took a lot of hooks to the head, many of those landing as rabbit punches due to the forward momentum of both fighters & Benn was a known headhunter, rarely throwing body shots; in addition to the concussive head punches he took, his style made him prone to head clashes & this was certainly the case in the fight with NB.
It was the roided out benn and his non stop rabbit punches, low blows, head butts, and a slow count in round #1 (never shouldve went past 1) Refs to blame, corner man to blame too. If he had Emanuel Steward in his corner still, I truly believe this outcome would not have been, Steward wouldve blown his mind at the refs, including a voluntary stoppage after the 10th rabbit punch and 2nd head butt. He protected his fighters. Just my .02.
@@JeffJackson-bg8rg On the odd occasion, but he did'nt make a career out of it like evander. Virtually every top fighter that went against evander was extremly weary of his dirty fighting style.
Like so many fighters he's suffering in unimaginable ways following his career. Boxing has no health insurance and so unregulated, these men are discarded and forgotten.
Guys fighting at the championship level make an enormous amount of money, and could easily afford both insurance and retirement plans; even as an independent (incorporated or LLC). But no one teaches athletes to manage their money. They go from being kids with nothing to suddenly having access to potentially millions of dollars...while still being basically kids. Everyone picks and paws at them, from managers, accountants, agents, lawyers, and even their own family members. They also have the invincibility complex that most 20-somethings have where they don't think the good times are going to end. Before they know it, an injury happens, a better athlete comes along, or even just natural process of aging and their career is over. As to after-career benefits: there is NO WAY any professional sport would be able to maintain itself if they were continuing to pay for the thousands and thousands of retired athletes who no longer make the organization money. Is it a bit tragic that athletes are viewed as disposable assets? Yep, but those athletes could also spend time focused on how to manage their money instead of living it up during the short time their careers will transpire. Save now, live it up when retired by the time they are 30.
Upmost respect to you man, what a way to end the video. Beautiful to see there are still some boxing content creators that have respect for these great men in the fighters and their families, not views from shock and awe.
A very touching & respectful video 🙏 .. the fight with Benn was the best & the worst that I have ever witnessed .. the greatest comeback to the most unfortunate ending ..
cornermen done something to Gerald, he was fine, he quit because he just could not take any more and knew Benn was never going to stop bashing him up... he got off the knee stood was fine spoke t people fine, stood in his corner fine and talking ok, then he sat down cornermen surrounding him along with don king them bam he hits the floor and is in a distressful state. they done something bad to him, you dont go from being realy good to bad that fast.... don king lost a fortune due to Gerald quitting, enough said.
This is a gladiator sport which is the display of tremendous skill and courage in combat, sometimes to the death, we should honor such men. They have showed us the triumph of the human spirit over poverty, broken families and living on the periphery of society. My donation is in. Thank you Gerald McClellan…
Can you believe a card like that, Mc,Clellan v Jackson at their peak only 3rd on the card. That would never happen nowadays, it would be a load of tomato cans getting paid nothing then one cherry picked main event, that we already know what the result will be.
It's bone chilling to hear him talk about the "mind that he has..." I just wish his sister Lisa all the best in taking care of him, she's done a great job
@@growth2newconnections718 He got severe brain damage against Nigel Benn in his next fight. He know lives under the permanent care of his sister Lisa, as mentioned by @blakasmurf above.
If memory serves me it was the first fight with The Hawk that ruined Gerald’s life in the long run; this despite it being the highlight of his career. He complained about headaches after taking too many hard shots from Julian. The damage was done there long before the Benn fight and it’s tragic conclusion destroying Gerald’s life and robbing fight fans of what could’ve been…McClellan v Roy Jones Jr, Toney or Bernard Hopkins. Thanks for uploading this, love the channel 🙌
Those punches did alter his life forever. Had Jackson not had those vision problems in the second fight it would have been a great fight as well but I think G-Man would have beat them anyway. He was a different type of savage. Julian Jackson had one punch knockout power that was harder but G-Man was a whole other type of swarm fighter. If that Nigel Benn fight hadn't happened and it wasn't the power of Nigel Benn that did it either. Watch that fight closely. If Richard Steele would have been there, he would have called that fight in the first round. Lol. Wish he had. G-Man was a monster in the ring
@salahuddinmuhammad3251 Geraldgot battered by Benn. A tragic ending...however, Gerald had a poor defence which is why he took so many big shots. Yes he had Benn in trouble etc bit Benn was a beast himself and thoroughly deserved the win.
@@mrp9023 Nigel Benn was juiced in that fight he didn’t deserve anything, bum!!! Nigel passed his steroid ways down to his son. Both are a disgrace to boxing
I fully agree with the opinions that Gerald McClellan was wobbled in the first fight and could have sustained brain injury. Julian Jackson's punches were a freak of nature. So knowing full well that Jackson could hurt him next, McClellan finished the job in the first round in their second fight. I was actually feeling terrified looking at the two fights.
Thank you for posting the gofundme link. Donated and hopefully he will exceed his goal. The man deserves so much for all he gave to the sport and the fans.
God didn’t get all of the presidents who molested kids and all the people now who are pos who are still living what happened to him was being a boxer that’s it.
3:50 Big Frank worried me when he interrupted the narrator with ‘…there’s a dangerous, dangerous, dangerous No1 hit man in America…’ if he said dangerous one more time my phone would’ve exploded and caught fire 😂
McClellan KOd Jackson, in both fights, but not without being wobbled a few times. Jackson’s power probably started a degenerative process in Gerald’s brain health. In the 2nd fight McClellan wanted to get Jackson out of the way asap rather than suffer those bombshells he took in the 1st fight. He complained of headaches for a long time afterwards, and couldn’t spar normally.
“2nd fight, McClellan wanted to get Jackson out of the way asap rather than suffer those bombshells…..” That’s what I clicked on the video to say. McClellan knew he had to get Jackson gone quick because Jackson had one-punch knockout power.
@@poindextertunesCorrect, and McClellans coach was a useless bag of skin, he didn’t have a clue what was going on. If Manny was there that shit would never have happened. Don King is one man I wish had nothing to do with boxing. He is a remorseless sociopath with no care, or sense of moral duty, he cares only for money and control, that’s it. King also had a hand in coercing McClellan to leave Manny Steward, no doubt it was about money. King was already squabbling with McCllellans family over, fees, prize money, and expenses within weeks of McClellans near death brain injury. King eventually came good with McClellans money, he paid what was agreed with a small amount on top due to medical cost and domestic costs immediately after and when he returned to the US. It’s probably the only thing King ever done right in his life.
Its crazy that the first fight, a championship fight at that, was an undercard fight to chavez and lennox lewis respectively. That wdv been an epic ppv in today's game
Did you notice in the first fight , about halfway through the commentator said he’s blinking. I’m just thinking of the Benn fight, whether something was up with Gerald then. Respect
McClellan was a savage puncher. Such a shame when a young, fit guy has it all snatched away. Injured ex fighters get wheeled out when convenient but I get the feeling the likes of McClellan are basically forgotten by boxing. A small percentage of the profit for every boxing match should go to an injured fighter scheme. Ex world champs like McClellan shouldn't have to live and die in poverty. Boxing is the most corrupt, most dodgy sport. When I see the likes of Jake Paul allegedly earn millions from fixed fights and circus acts it makes me puke.
Manny Steward told some of us once that Gerald McClellan was the meanest (as an individual) fighter he ever worked with. He said he was just a cruel individual top to bottom. Just something I always remembered, I do feel bad for the guy and always have. Tragic story about a guy whose Bad Karma seemingly caught up to him.
I saw that interview with Manny Steward too. He said McClellan had the widest mean streak in any boxer he ever trained. And he's trained many of the toughest fighters.
@@tomhatton3303 I never heard an interview with Manny talking about McLellan that way, but I can here him plain as day. Me and a few others were fortunate enough to get to talk with Manny prior to an event we were all attending at Freedom Hall in Louisville back in 97', it was an exhibition fundraiser to raise money for what would become the Ali Center. He kindly shared many stories of experiences with his fighters, some good and some not so good, but him talking about Gerald McClellan always stuck with me. It was clear he didn't want to say anything negative at that time about the guy, but clear also that he really had nothing good to say either. He just referred to him several times as a very cruel and mean intended human being, and that he never was able to relate to him as an individual, and that his and McClelland partnership was 100% buisness and nothing more. I believe he genuinely loved to mentor young fighters, not just to be champions, but also to become men. A few names, specifically Gerlad and one other, he never wished to have any personal relationship with.
His other so called trainer after Steward said the exact same thing. He said that when he tried to say a prayer for him before the Benn fight Gerald looked at him and mocked him, all of a sudden you're M'Fing religious now?

after the first jackson fight G man was complaining of bad headaches - despite winning the fight he took some heavy shots from JJ also he got rid of Emmanuel Steward as his trainer and these were the beginning of the end for him IMHO
Don't act like every human isn't cruel to someone or something its the nature of man you can't deny it but its inhuman to be intentional rejoice with a downfall of another man .Benn himself physiological was down for a long time because of the unfortunate consequences of their fight so who are you to be happy
@@specialbreed Only a savage would feed a puppy to a Pitbull if there's ever a case of Karma Nigel Benn dealt a whole heap of it to a deserving Gerald. My heart went out to Gerald before I found out what he did - Zero sympathy now.
"McClellan participated in dog fighting. McClellan's trainer and family admitted that McClellan was involved with fighting pitbulls, and on one occasion had used tape to bind the jaws of a Labrador shut before allowing his pet pit bull "Deuce" to kill it." - WW
Just watched a you tube video yesterday , where McClellan said he was gonna put Nigel Benn in a wheelchair , and then said he'd then put Nigel Benn's Dad in a wheelchair. Funny how things turn out innit .
My heart breaks for this man. He was meant for greater tings. Benn was in survival mode the night they fought, nobody was beating Benn that night. So sad the way it all went down down. These are the risks in this sport. A horrible reality at times.
@@iargueta1220 You obviously don't understand humor.....The whole point being made is that Gerald McClellan got what he had coming(Sad way to be Humbled, but it is what it is)...he was noted in the past as a do anything at all costs to be victorious fighter...Not a nice guy at all ..had more of a chip on his shoulder than Foreman ever did.
With love from Nigeria: I know about these two guys, but never did I know they fought each other. Not even once but twice. OMG! Slug fest! At the end part of the video, I was almost down to tears to see how a great fighter's career was cut short. OMG! I wish him the best.
We talk a lot about guys like Big George, but P4P both these two fighters are probably the hardest punchers I've seen so far . . let's see, let's put 'Tommy Hearns in there too . . If I think of anybody else, I'll come back and post the names. Watch fights of both these guys, they were extraordinary.
Jackson and McClennan hit so hard! Real boxers that don’t play! The days of no joking in the sport. Jackson definitely could’ve won that first fight, but left himself exposed. The second fight was all about Gerald’s composure on finishing Julian. And this shows how great NIGEL BENN was with beating Gerald at his peak. We have to pay full respect to Julian Jackson for an amazing knockout ratio. And will always be considered an legend for somehow getting through that night against Bomber Graham🥊
Wrong, don't be dick! If you can not see the absolute disgusting mind set of this evil creature then i actually feel abit sorry for you. @@GaryChurch-hi8kb
Salute @ by boxing after dark 4 keeping it real at the end of the video it was a celebration about how Gerald career took off not the end & that was special.. Ijs Respectfully Gerald was the truth hands downs the ending of his career was sad.!!! Continue 2 Rest In Paradise Gerald McClellan 💯💪🥊💔🕊
The thing is you have to really slow down the footage to see punches, that is how fast these guys are. Shame we never saw Julian vs Mike Mcallum 2, or Mike vs G Man.
I remember that fight and picked Gerald to win and he did , and remember him being hurt later , was always one of my top 3 fighter's , excellent boxer God Bless him and his family
Benn unintentionally head butted McLellan in the face not long before he went unconscious . I saw it the first time I saw the fight and haven’t heard anyone else point it out.
At the finish of the 2nd fight ........."He hit him on the top of the head on the way down and he's totally disorientated". Who hires these guys? Seriously? It was a body shot, pure and simple. The shot the commentator is talking about, we can't even tell if it connects or not. Honestly.......It makes a joke out of boxing!!!
Julian Jackson is one of the hardest punchers is weight division, no one can dispute that fact, but he has also been knocked out six times. he deliver a hard punch but can't take one.
Seriously hard punchers both - Nigel Benn (another seriously hard banger) was very lucky to get out of the first round against Gerald; a very unfortunate end to that fight, but, what a fight it was. Thanks for uploading, and, very best wishes to Gerald McClellan.
Gerald McClellan was a hell of a fighter. He twice fought, and convincingly beat another truly great fighter is Julian Jackson. However, he did not escape unscathed. I believe, as do many others, Jackson's powerful blows to McClellan's head did permanent damage that would eventually be worsened in his final bout against Nigel Benn. McCellan complained of repeated headaches after the last McClellan bout. I was once a lot more sympathetic of the crippling injuries McClellan suffered during his boxing career. What changed my opinion of him is when I learned of his involvement in dog fighting. It is bad enough to participate in something far more brutal, something fully inhumane that is boxing, but McClellan took it a step further. According to his own trainer McClellan once allowed his Pit Bull to savagely kill a defenseless dog after having taped the mouth of the dog closed. From that point forward, including to this day, I have little sympathy for McClellan. I figure he got payment in full for the cruelty he had inflicted upon another living creature. Karma is a real bitch, and McClellan's barbarism provoked Karma that was not just a bitch, but a truly pissed and vengeful bitch. The old motto 'Do unto other, blah, blah, blah" apparently does not apply to how we are to treat other people. He abused one of God's greater creations, man's best friend, so God gave him the reward he had earned. And the day will come where Gerald will stand before. Maybe God will figure he's been punished enough. Then again, maybe not.
Karma? It doesn't exist. Did karma get Stalin, or Mao, or Mugabe, or Amin? Of course not! Karma is like God, a pretence in justice being served. It hardly ever is.
@stevewise said it all. Totaly AGREE!!! NO INSURANCE At ALL..., No insurance for anythink, any kind of disabeling you from the Boxing,etc.. THIS SHOULD immidiately BE CHANGED in ANY and EVERY combat sport, not just BOXing!!!
I really wish there was footage of McClellans 2 losses early in his career. It's hard to imagine him losing 2 fights in a row that early in his career considering his power, and the skill he had to even beaten Roy Jones Jr. in the amateurs
I see a lot of fans slating Benn saying it's his fault that McLellan is in the situation he is in because of rabbit punches, i would say that isn't the case, it was purely accidental, and he looked damaged going in to that fight. You can't ship clean blows from a puncher like Jackson and be fine, then go and fight a banger like Benn.
Don King, for that second fight sc 0:07 umball. You can see that he got swarmed and had his eye problems. He need a little more time to get it together. But G-Man was destroying everybody anyway. Julian Jackson had a harder / punch power rate but G-Man was on another level with savagery and skill. Crunch Gym turned out a monster with that one and he had everybody shook. If round1 had happened today between he and Nigel Benn, they would have stopped that. Jackson did a lot of damage to him though but G-Man was a Savage on the other level. I only compartmentalizing deal with people with their boxing careers, I don't get into people's personal lives. He was a beast in the ring but I thought highly of Julian Jackson as well.
A lot of people think the issues that came to surface in the Benn fight began in this one. Idk if thats true, but i read somewhere that shortly before the Bemm fight and following the fight with Jackson, he was sparring someone at Kronk, and the guy said after a stiff jab Gerald began blinking like he did in his fast fight and claimed to have gotten thumbed in the eye and stopped for the day. His partner swore he didnt thumb the eye
G man won the fight but the damage he took from Julian Jackson caused or made it possible to Suffer his traumatic brain injury Julian Jackson was a Generational puncher
both great fighters two of the hardest punchers of all time ,i think jackson was past his best but he was still very dangerous i dont know how benn beat mccellan when they fought in that brutal fight he was on the receiving end of most of the punishment,i think the condioning was the key factor ,by all accounts mccellan only trained to fight 5 rounds tragic end to a great fight.
Man...having live thru this era, I FORGOT how tough boxers were. These two first of all fought each other on an undercard fight risking it all. The power shots they landed on each other woulda finished most. McClellan, had he not gotten injured would have eventually challenged "Reluctant" Roy (I like to think). They rematched a year later. I don't think we'll see this again. The closest we've gotten to this kinda risk is Wilder and Fury fighting three times.
@@donaldsmith6737 Hey, I get it. Could he have fought better opposition ? Sure.....but there is no denying the talent , skill, and pure God Given Athleticism of RJJ. He was for a time, phenomenal.
@@teriakamoto no argument from me. I wish Roy had more "warm bodies" on his list... Toney...Hopkins...Tarver. Represent his challenges at Middle..Super Middle....and Lt. Heavy.
