With big plans on the way for the channel in the summer, I figured I'd take the next few weeks to close the lid on the Mega Man X series re-reviews in the next few weeks before we get into those plans full swing. So to start, we have my re-review of Mega Man Xtreme and Mega Man Xtreme 2 on the GameBoy Color? Are these games worth playing in 2022? Has anything changed since 2016/17? Well...watch and find out.

Fun little fact about Xtreme 2: Recently, it's been discovered that you can just end the game at the boss rush, and skip Sigma entirely. Just enter a boss room, choose Exit in the pause menu, and boom

Hi, I was the person that found that! It’s exclusive to the Japanese version, and has resulted in new categories being made for the game. Still kinda funny how I stumbled onto it but I’m not complaining. I’d really recommend choosing Xtreme 2 in the upcoming bidwar at SGDQ between these two titles, I’ll be running it there!

one extra detail of Xtreme 2, is the fact that after beating extreme mode, you can play a boss rush with either Zero or X, the special thing here is, you can play a boss rush of bosses from Xtreme 2 and a boss rush of bosses from the first Xtreme, which is kinda funny with Zero

I've always thought Zain was one of the coolest looking Megaman villains. The elaborate gold armor, that uncompromisingly cold glare from behind his faceplate, and that great sword that would even make Cloud Strife turn his head. It's a shame his only appearance was relegated to Xtreme 1. I would've loved to see him and Zero have a 1 on 1 fight or something along those lines.

I remember when I was a kid I thought it was insane that they managed to create a MegaMan X game with elements from X1, X2, X3 and X4 on a tiny 8-bit laptop powered by AAA batteries, it's a huge improvement compared to the old games Megaman that came before the Game Boy were extremely slow and it's even more surprising that the first Xtreme works on the original 1989 Game Boy. (unfortunately Xtreme 2 was exclusive to Game Boy Color for some reason) I really admire Capcom's effort at the time to achieve this.
@8-bitsarda747

I'm gonna be that guy and say, the Gameboy was powered by AA batteries, not AAA
@DragoonMS
@DragoonMS 2 года назад
Gameboy Pocket ran on 2xAAA batteries, but the original, GBC, & initial GBA all ran on AA batteries. Megaman Xtreme 2/Rockman X2: Soul Eraser was a Color-only cart specifically to do two things: one, try to ditch the slowdown that plagued Xtreme 1/X1: Cyber Mission when playing on a GB or GB Pocket (but it was fairly fine on a GBC), and two, that battle against Kaiser Sigma in his battle suit at the end of Xtreme Mode with its color changing ability that forces you to switch between X & Zero. Yup, one kinda crappy thing that probably needed the GBC's added CPU power (because Link's Awakening DX had the GBC exclusive Color Dungeon, but it otherwise was perfectly playable on the regular GB/GBP...NOT having the whole game be GBC only)
@BackPalSA
@BackPalSA 2 года назад

@DragoonMS

@@phillysteak997 This is something I'm not sure about. The US release of Pokémon Yellow was apparently converted into a dual mode GBC cart (despite having a regular Gameboy box AND despite having a full color setup when used with the Super Gameboy; the Japanese release only had the SGB mode, it didn't have the GBC mode), but it doesn't seem to run any worse or any better on a Gameboy Pocket. Mortal Kombat 4 doesn't even count, because even on the GBC, it runs like 💩💩💩💩, seeing as how it's literally built on the engine they puked out MK3 with...but to be honest & fair, the only Gameboy port of a Mortal Kombat game that was actually *GOOD* was MKII. I would guess that something that's action packed (a lot going onscreen at once) would have issues.

Xtreme was too amazing as a kid, and sort of a miracle in terms of porting. Sure it's not X, and it was obvious even back then, but it was portable MMX at a time when this was a huge deal and a rarity. ''I still don't get why capcom would release mega man games on obsolete hardware'' That's because not everyone jumps from one generation to the next that fast, in the case of MegaMan and Bass Capcom was very clear about it and it was basically the ''farewell'' to the SNES and honestly I think that's really good for On the part of Capcom, not everyone can afford to buy a new console that fast but they still want to play the new games. That's why we still see a lot of games coming out for the PS4 even with the PS5 already having 2 years on the market, I for example won't be able to buy a PS5 anytime soon so I'm very happy that I can still play games like GOW Ragnarok.

*braces self for the eventual Command Mission Review* Im aware of the game's issues, repetive area designs, and other interesting bits. But as a MegaMan RPG in the more traditional light, It stands up pretty well. RPG Fans might have issues here, but MegaMan fans might like it as a hidden gem, if not because of the stories, but for bringing the X series into a genre that only two other subseries were able to perfect in their own right.

The parts system and character swapping, while something we're used to by this point, really helps make Xtreme 2 something special. It's fun to plan my route and experiment with the tools I'm given to maximize speed and damage. Especially the speed, I LOVE how fast the game is. Is it perfect? No, it's got some major flaws. It's interesting to have a take from a relatively new fan of the MMX franchise. Having a more fresh perspective shines a different light on these games in contrast to my buying these when they were originally released. Things were a lot different than they are now. For example, yes, the Gameboy Advanced was launched around the time of Xtreme 2, but video game coverage wasn't a huge thing unless you really went out of your way. Not only were plenty of GBC games coming out, most people didn't even know a new kind of Gameboy was being released. The ability to fit basically the entire X games with very little comprise and such a close game feel to the originals was amazing. It's taken for granted nowadays with the Switch and such, but the ability to play a game so close to a home console game on a car ride was world changing. This was also my first experience being able to play Zero as a full character, not just the limited X3 version. That alone made Xtreme 2 my favorite game for a LOOONG time. You may not have much reason to play these games, but with nostalgia, they're amazing.

I'm really glad that you took a second look at Xtreme2. When you grade on a curve for hardware limitations, I think Xtreme2 is more than worthy of standing with the giants like X4, and I would love to see it remastered someday. True, it has some technical issues with the weapons and item game. But thematically speaking it does the very best job in the entire series of showcasing X and Zero as a team. Not only the final boss but also the tank boss in the fortress, where X and Zero each have clear advantages (X can more easily hit the upper head while Zero can push the tank back to attack the lower), and the Scramble Change is faster and smoother than in the main series. I also really like the air dash physics, in that you keep your dash momentum until you land, instead of dead stopping midair like on the PS1. Heavy nostalgia while still putting a new spin on it is always a winner in my book, as is literally any excuse to see Iris again.

🙂 well done j, I honestly like the idea you've been doing on re reviewing the X games *much like in a way where one would replay older games as the years pass by, an example being me playing something like starfox 64 and I still enjoy it as much as I did before* that being said, while I never played much of xtreme 1, xtreme 2 was part of my childhood thanks to a neighbor, I liked it ,despite my love for portable gaming wasn't quite there yet *that honestly didn't hit the stride until I got the vita* and if I may speak kindly, your style of reviewing the X series *as well as other games you've done, even if I don't play them all myself* really does show that you learned to see the games in a positive *or even negative* light, some games can still hold up well, whereas others not so much, I don't expect a response back, 🙂 but again, I tip my hat to you good sir!! *and if I may ask, have you ever played the uncharted games, if so, what are your thoughts in brief*

Honestly, I wish that they kept the whole idea going, I kind of liked how they mixed and matched bosses from X1-3 in Xtreme and Xtreme 2. If they had expanded further upon it then the games could have provided us with endless possibilities, like imagine if they made a rogue like game, where you could fight any of the bosses from X1-X8, and you basically had to figure out the best tactics to survive, since some powers would not be very effective against some bosses, plus it would be kind of cool to fight old bosses as Zero or AXL, and see what kind of powers they would give them, they could also go a step further and make unique content like Wily Wars did for the Megaman Trilogy on the Genesis, where the powers you took with you from Megaman 1-3 decided how you could proceed in those new stages.

*Controversial opinion warning.* I mean no trolling in saying this, it's just my personal thoughts and opinions as a long-time viewer. (Plz don't kill me lol) After seeing a number of your MMX videos as of late, and really mulling on this for a while... I feel like these re-reviews of your old content are sort of unnecessary and lack a certain passion to them. I do appreciate the effort put into these videos, and I also more or less appreciated the reasoning you explicitly gave at the start of these re-reviews as to why you were doing them, but the more I see them, the more I feel like your dissatisfaction with your older videos was not entirely fair to those videos. I watched the original reviews. Were they 'lower quality' in some ways that could be improved upon in the current day? Technically, yes, of course. But were they bad reviews?... I dunno. I enjoyed them, at least. Even if you don't feel your opinions and structure was entirely valid to what you feel now, you still gave the games professional reviews that allowed people to see plenty of the games and understand them well enough to form their own opinions, which really is the most significant thing a review video can do. I also feel like you are simply tackling these re-reviews like a list to check out, an issue to 'fix' by replacing said issue. Heck, you even brought up the list. Which is why it feels a bit passionless from my point of view. It's also a statement that you're making that you think that EVERY one of your old Mega Man videos were rough and unpolished enough to need replacement. If you felt this way about particular videos and remade those particular videos that'd be a fair thought, but throwing the entire collection of videos under the bus simply because you made them 5 years ago feels...unfair to your older content, I guess? What ultimately inspired me to write this comment was how this video ends with you mentioning a re-RE-review of Maverick Hunter X, and mentioning 'third time's the charm'. As if the first two videos were just failures. I dunno man. I just sometimes feel like you're way too harsh on your older videos on the simple virtue that 'they're old and I could have done better'. I feel there's an air of dissatisfaction and perfectionism with you sometimes, and that does admittedly creep into my mind when I see these re-reviews and makes the experience less enjoyable. I just feel that there's a different air to your wholly-original content such as the Riders video that I don't see in these re-reviews. I'm a person with OCD and perfectionism who has to learn how to control those feelings and be satisfied with myself and what I've done, so this is why I've thought about this with you. I get similar vibes from you that I do when I'm pushing myself too hard. And I know for a fact that over-perfectionism is a curse RU-vidrs can fall into. It all concerns me, so I wanted to leave my thoughts. (...Sorry to the people that this comment inevitably makes mad. Wasn't my goal at all, I promise you.)

You know, I’m planning on doing a side project where I actually go and watch my old videos, every single one and seeing how they actually hold up. Because today, I can only look through the filter of how I remember them, and the attitudes I had on reviewing *as a person* back then, rather than thinking if the actual video was good or bad. So, you could entirely be correct. I don’t know if I’m a perfectionist, but I definitely have OCD. So when the footage isn’t perfectly pixelated on an old video (the way I like it now) I just want to see it done over from scratch. The MHX re-re-review is already done, so I can’t change that. But…we will see what happens after.

I was always debating whether I should try these two. But while they seem to be a nice distraction, I've got a lot of other things that are just more interesting and potentially fulfilling to play.

I would have loved a Xtreme 3 in GBA building from Extreme 2 gameplay, but I guess they felt that with Zero already they did not need another action plataformer in the same vein

The OG Game Boy Mega Man games remixed the levels of the returning Robot Masters which makes them interesting to play even if you have experience with the NES games. The issue with Xtreme is that the levels were lifted straight from the SNES which honestly makes me question why I am playing a watered down Mega Man X game from the GBC that does not even bother to remix it's levels or give me new weapons like the OG Game Boy Mega Man games did.

I played both recently and i have to agree about Xtreme 2 being a lot more enjoyable than 1. The part system, the way the armor dash works (the charge shot is not my favourite) and the changing of Zero on the fly is pretty good. Tank Sigma was awful though. Gareth and Berkana leave something to be desired as characters (though Berkana making a pass at X and him wanting nothing to do with that was funny) but their design is just awesome.

Dare I say Xtreme 2 somehow made the soundtrack even better. They sound so much better in 8-bit.

Spark Mandrill and Chill Penguin are supposed to be taller than X. Chill Penguin might not seem like it from most of his in-action sprites but when he stands straight up you can tell he's taller. And that new artwork is X6 style not X4. I'd be happy to help as a Megaman expert consultant for future videos.

The game is actualy Called Mega Man Cross Dive, in Japan X is a Cross, so we get Megaman X (Cross) Dive, Digimon Xross (Cross) Wars, Namco X (Cross) Capcom, Project X (Cross) Zone. They all involve crossover, with the X meaning Cross.

The problem was you werent a kid in the early 2000s who prolly had a couple other games if that.. this was a great package back then.. alot of ganes didnt offer fast gameplay like this and an icon like X needed portability even if alltile flawed

Even for the Game Boy, I feel that those two games could've been so much more with more of their own bosses and stages. Also, Isaz and Sowilo (AKA the Sphinx Tank) in Xtreme 2 is still one of my least favorite MMX bosses.

I think I said this on the old video...if I ever did, I dunno. But back in those days, I never had an SNES. I was a Genesis kid to start despite almost immediately getting a GBC for Pokemon. I did play X5 a ton to start my Mega Man journey, but before I even played X4/6 I got Xtreme 1. And I love it to death because of that. And then seeing on the Mega Man Homepage that this game is a *demake* of the SNES trilogy I never played excited me even more to play them. Funnily enough, because I found Xtreme 2 way harder even with Zero, I hadn't liked it as much as Xtreme 1 being relatively comfy. To me, *both* of these games were 100% brand new content to me at the time, the X Collection on GameCube being the first time I would ever play the SNES trilogy. ...Sort of, with it having the PS1 X3, which I prefer honestly. What I'm saying is, because I lacked the means to play the original games Xtreme was based on, I was able to, and still do appreciate what they did for the series a lot more than anyone who plays them post 3DS/X Legacy Collection is ever going to get out of either of them. X Legacy especially makes almost everything about this collection except Xtreme 2's gimmicks wholly redundant, but you will never hear me say Xtreme 1 is a "D" tier, not on any planet. On your scale, I'd give them both B's, even with Xtreme 1's issues. They're far too engraved in my heart to think of them any less.
