I find is fascinating how some guys seem to think that breasts are like, emotional barometers or something. Like our boobs vibrate to let us know somethings wrong and we go, "What's that, Lassie? Timmy fell down the well?" Tit's don't have ESP. They don't emote. They don't move independently of the rest of the body. I know it's disappointing, but for the most part they sit there, catch crumbs, and/or get in the way.

These kinds of videos taught me how to write women ... As an NB (amab) I give as few details as possible about a woman's body shapes on purpose because it isn't important. The only time I've ever described breasts are with this sentence - "Sammy, my boobs are not as big as you think they are"

Yeah, same- I describe the same kind of stuff I'd describe for a male character (height, skin tone, hair/eye color, hair length, etc.) and the few times I've written about breast size (a small handful at the most), it's been as part of a self description in a character sheet I was doing for an RP me and my friends do from time to time (text-based, so no real imagery), and even then I typically don't do so unless I feel like it makes sense for the character. My friends focus a bit more on sizes than I do, but not nearly to the level of r/MenWritingWomen (my friend group is a mix of men and women of several orientations). Being the lone ace of the group, I probably should ask my friends for more help when writing that kind of stuff because it feels off for me type it out and I can't help but feel like it's really wooden or comes off as being awkward (which would probably be because it feels very awkward to write it out). Honestly, in the stories I've done, I try to avoid having my character show attraction because idk how to write it well- though, that's assuming that I remember that I'm writing allo characters rather than ace ones >_>

I know right, I'm female and I have no problem with guys appreciating my form as long as they remember there's an actual interesting person in here too, same thing goes for writing female characters. She can be attractive, her attractiveness doesn't even need to be super important to the story necessarily if you're wanting to add a bit of sex appeal, but she should ideally have some actual character traits going on besides big tiddies lol. Otherwise it can come off as a tad dehumanizing, unless the character is actually meant to be that flat for some plot-related reason. A main character should definitely have an actual personality.

I know that passage in the first one....she is the head cook in a large fantasy medieval farm complex...she prepares 3 multi-dish meals for over 50 farm hands. She is also the most powerful sorceress in that fantasy world. The reason for that passage is the king and his advisors were trying to figure out a problem that had a simple solution they were just too close to the problem when she pointed out the simple solution they asked how she could figure that out, and that's when she talked about being in charge of a kitchen and needing practicality to make a large kitchen with limited resources feed a lot of people. So out of context yeah it's bad writing of women, knowing the rest of it it's a really big compliment on organization and planning skills. It's not that women belong in the kitchen, that was her job. She was paid for it, and because of her abilities in running it smoothly and keeping everyone fed during planting and harvest, she was highly valued by the property owner.

The English language does have more or less appropriate or problematic words such as "willowy" "buxom" "sylph-like" "Rubensesque" "slender" "hourglass" "voluptuous" "coltish" etc. so that writers can give a good-enough-for-the-reader-to-imagine-the-character-&-get-on-with-the-story description of a female character's figure WITHOUT describing each perky breast, creamy thigh, & shapely leg in a way that calls to mind a Penthouse letters column. Some of this is not so much men writing women as bad writers describing ANYTHING... Thanks for all the laughs, though! My favourite annoying example of a man writing a women: in a short story, while the two characters are driving from point A to point B, a man asks a woman if she needs to pee & she says something like "Oh, you just asked that in order to bring up my vagina", which I think is supposed to sound like she's trying to be flirty but actually just sounds weird & uncomfortable to me, plus I have a pet peeve about people who confound vaginas & urethras...

I feel like the "mentioning the chest is unavoidable, or?"-comment encapsulates how some of these men (mostly, anyway) seem to view women in general. I mean, if I were to describe the physical attributes of a person I'd just met, I'd maybe talk about their style of dress, height, hair colour, general vibe, etc. but some of these men seem to be like "she's got a HUGE rack. Oh, and brown or blonde or black hair or something, whatever" lol

@catpoke9557 2 года назад
It is somewhat unavoidable if you want to describe their physical appearance in detail. Things like facial structure, hair color and style, bust size, muscle definition, and body type are very important aspects in defining a character's appearance fully. Saying this as an artist who has to consider ALL of these things and more when making a character. That said authors can only pick so many of these things to describe before it becomes overbearing, so you will leave a lot to the imagination. If someone has big boobas the reader can probably assume it if you say they have an hour glass shape, or if they're overweight they'll probably assume it too. Things like that. It's good to paint a picture including the boobs but it doesn't need to be direct like it is in these books.

This is actually very helpful. As a gay male writer, I even fall into describing women in a physical or sexual way sometimes, perhaps because that is the way society tells all men to think of them. I'm sexually attracted to men, obviously, but I rarely describe men by their butt, genitals, or broad heaving chest. The closest thing I can think of for men would be describing the features of their face or their sexy voice. My sister and my female best friend had pointed out a couple of years ago that the women I wrote were describe in a somewhat vulgar part by part way that made them sound like they were being visually groped. Obviously, I didn't want to convey that feeling to my readers, so I have made a consorted effort to describe women in other ways like their job title, talents, intelligence, and other non-physical attributes like bravery, honesty, strength, etc.

I think it's more a gender thing thing a sexual orientation thing. I don't often come across novels written by lesbians that spend paragraphs describing breasts.
@mawgrim1

Whenever I write a description of people, especially a main character, I try to keep details to a minimum so the readers can identify with that person. If the character has a particular characteristic that makes them stand out in the crowd - red hair, exceptionally tall or short, missing left arm, distinctive scars - then it's worth mentioning. Having someone look at themselves in a mirror is a big cliché in writing and should be avoided. Most of the examples Jamie read out were classic descriptions of the 'male gaze', which is from the perspective of a notionally typical heterosexual man considered as embodied in the audience or intended audience, characterised by a tendency to objectify or sexualise women.

Oh my gosh 🙈 The awful "X looked at herself in the mirror/pondwater/mildly reflective surface" writing trope... 😂 It always sticks out like a sore thumb, and I very rarely see it applied to anyone EXCEPT female characters! But even worse are the novels where author suddenly starts going "X brushed her gorgeously long, wavy hair back off her forehead and rolled her intense blue eyes" as an alternative way of introducing character description. Like, the only people who actually think about their own physicality that way tend to be super-self-absorbed a-holes, and I don't think that's how you want your hero/ine to come across in the first chapter? 😵‍💫

The thing that bugs me about the second one is that it would have been fine (and actually kind of good) if he'd stopped at "...in the backwind of the rotors." Like, you know she's tall, you know she's not bookish, you know it's windy, what else do you need?

Omg it also bothered me so much (and o haven’t seen anyone mention it at all) he says her breasts are unsupported, but then talks about her ribbed bodice?! That would be supportive undergarments, just in the dress itself!!!! But then there’s also the whole, truely unsupported breasts wouldn’t really have cleavage… also didn’t he say they were small? Or am I melding a few together? Because small unsupported breasts absolutely will not yield cleavage

"The kind of legs that kept her butt from resting on her shoes" So, like, the kind of legs everyone has? I'm pretty sure everyone's legs keep their butt from resting on their shoes. It's a fairly essential component between the shoe and the butt.
@ShadowNinetales
@ShadowNinetales 2 года назад
Yeah exactly, I had thought this was meant to be a satire piece describing legs in a way that applies to literally all legs. Same as "her legs went all the way down to the ground". I forget where that's from but I've heard it anyway.

My guess is it describes what the butt is doing when the character is kneeling or similar. This pose would cause the butt to be on the shoes, unless the legs were particularly strong and held it higher or something like that.

Ah, I see the word “undulating” has once again made a comeback! No seriously, this word seems awfully common in books despite it being uncommon(?) in normal speech. More often than it should be, it is used in sexual scenarios (why!?). And the word has been completely ruined for me because of it. EVERY TIME I see or hear the word my brain goes “ooh undulating again”, always paying special attention to that the word has once again been used. Highly recommend a video by Merphy Napier if you want to see where and how the word has been used.

First time commenting here! Hi, everybody! First thing I have to say is that I am super thankful, I've learnt so much from him about everything trans and I'm so happy he's out there saying what needs to be said *^_^* This being said, there goes a little thought about this series. I have the impression Jammie forgets that in some of the excerpts we are actually hearing a character's voice describing a woman and thus these parts need to be understood/judged not only as a mere description of the woman, but simultaneously as a psychological portrait of the character who's making that description. Wanting to depict a character as sexist through the way they describe a woman can serve some specific intention in the book, like explaining the way they act in other parts of the book or simply pointing out how ridiculous that character is. Likewise, the narrator of a story should not be understood as litterally 'the writer's voice' talking to us, but as a specific voice the writer chose to tell their story, which can be far from their actual beliefs, if that serves their literary purposes. I know Jammie's not really roasting any writer in here, and it is very likely indeed that in a number of the excerpts it's just the author's sexism, I just wanted to share that thought with youz -and with Jammie, if he ever read this. Lots of love!

So why get mad at men for writing some fictional characters that are different than your personal experiences? I hope you can discern reality from fiction.
@beardiemom
@beardiemom 2 года назад
@@lolizorz I can, the problem is that quite a few men can't. The guy I was talking to was not talking about fictional women, but was trying to explain to me that women in general just pretend to want to be successful on their own and really want a man to be their sugar daddy. This type of writing is harmful because there is a relative large number of men that cannot discern reality from fiction and believe that these fictional characters are the average woman.

Kinda related to the “practical”/“dreamers” - I am reminded of Terry Pratchett’s Equal Rites, the first Discworld novel that introduced witches, where witch magic is more earthy, more about finding solutions to help people with their everyday problems, and wizard magic is more associated with the sky, more esoteric and theoretical. All that to say that isn’t the first time I have seen something kinda like idea, although it’s magic system world-building rather than all men and all women. Also the entire point of Equal Rites is that it isn’t as simple as girl = witch, boy = wizard.

7:22 I don't know if someone's already said this but Jazz is a name in this context and that dash is an em dash used to convey a new clause or whatever. You can change it up a bit to make it a bit easier to read: "Now I'll tell you something, Jazz. Something which no woman should ever admit..."

The second excerpt is from Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons". He also wrote "The da Vinci Code". Fun adventures but not great literature. His turgid writing style and awkward descriptions of women remind one of an 22 year old incel attempting to write fan fiction. Has he ever even seen a woman?

I have a few comments on the last one: The name is pronounced something like Ow-Mah-May. From the writing style I immediately knew this excerpt was from Haruki Murakami. I enjoy his books, but he has a very… odd way of writing women. I think I’ve seen a few scenes in movies and such where men, to make sure that they’re the same, pull the waistband of their pants out to (presumably) check their dick size. Maybe that’s what he was referencing, but it’s still weird.
