Stigmas are not only wrong, but they can be dangerous. We are mentally ill. Yes. We have a mental illness. Several, actually. We are on disability. Also known in the United States as SSDI. We are NOT "living the good life off of everyone else's tax money." Several years ago, Cathy got attacked by someone she THOUGHT was her friend. Not anymore! But here is an example of the kind of stuff that mental illness stigmas and disability stigmas lead to in our daily lives. And two things I forgot to mention: 1) When we do go grocery shopping, we try to buy the cheap store brand groceries as much as we can. We can't afford name brand everything. And 2) we live in the CHEAPEST apartments in our area. Barely.
We're on a mission! We are David and Cathy. Both of us live our daily lives with mental illnesses. Despite our mental illnesses, it is possible to lead a semi-normal life and have a great, loving relationship. We want to show the world that it's possible to function with a mental illness. We want to debunk all those common myths and stigmas! While the world of psychiatry has come a long way in the last 30 years, there is still so much to learn and do! We also want to reach out to people like us and give them some hope that they can be okay. They are not alone in their battles. We want to at least be able to say we tried. So join us on our daily adventures in the world of invisible illnesses.
