All the stars came to realise that Bird wasn't really disrespecting them, he was just playing head games. Sure, it was maddening at the time, but... well, Look at what Magic did at Bird's retirement ceremony. How good was Larry at head games and strategy? He not only won three MVPs in a row, but when his body gave out and he went to coaching, he won the award for that, too... and then when he went to management, he won an award for that too! He's the only guy to have won all three. And think about his devotion to his team- he and Miller are the only modern players to spend their entire careers at a single team- and Larry accepted being a lightning rod to get all his teammates rings, too. He's a mensch. (though, being from Indianapolis, I think Reggie Miller is too)

I was fortunate to watch the matchups between Bird's Celtics and Jordan's Bulls in the mid to late 80s. Basically NBA history in the making. Here's an interesting fact about Bird; when he entered the NBA as a rookie, he inherited a Celtics team, the worst in Boston history with a record of 29-53, and with the same starting line up, Larry took this team to the best record in the 1979-80 season, and all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to Dr J and the 76ers, at the time the greatest turnaround in NBA history. And the following season, he won a ring in the Finals. Jordan couldn't do this. And he has acknowledged this. Bird from year one knew how to make his teammates better and how to win, and it took Jordan years to learn this, much of this by watching and playing against Bird. Bird taught him ruthlessness, how to motivate his teammates, how to belittle and intimidate opponents. And one can see this by Jordan's admiration of Bird in later years. Bird used to relentlessly trash talk MJ, especially when he would try to defend Bird, "hey guys, I got a little one trying to guard me!". But Bird also knew how great Jordan was, saying "God disguised as Michael Jordan. He knew he was going to be the greatest. But not while Bird had a chance to shut him down, especially in the playoffs, sweeping Jordan in all of the games. Fans concentrate on the Magic/Bird rivalry, ,but the Jordan rivalry was just as intense and entertaining.

If you've never seen the shot that was mentioned, that Dr. J made, you should check it out. Not sure if your eyes will see it like ours did. It was his last year in the ABA, he drove the ball to the baseline. He was in the air, heading behind the bucket. He changed direction in the air, and came out on the left side of the basket for a backward layup. He had the big fro at that time.

The story of Larry KICKING the ball is CRAP. He didn’t kick the ball, he THREW it! Curry Kirkpatrick from Sports Illustrated was there and told the story on a Larry documentary. Aside from that, I’d bet serious money Larry never ever kicked a ball. But we DO know Larry had a quarterback’s arm. So I can easily see Larry hurling that ball over MJs head. His full court passes are legendary.

How did he not get revenge on the Celtics? They were not relevant for the entire 1990s. Bird’s prime and Jordans’s prime never overlapped.

Bird injured his back replacing his mother's driveway. Think about Bird's work ethic. He's a multimillionaire and he's out there busting up a driveway and his back during the summer.
