Always makes me cry...and yet I can't get enough of this beautiful song. I lost my husband in October of 1994, when he was only 45, and it changed everything in my life. I still miss him so much.
When October Goes" is a ballad based on a lyric that the late Johnny Mercer had written but did not complete. It was given to Barry by Johnny Mercer's wife and then matched up to a melody by Barry and released in 1984, Great song, one of my best all time favorites.
Absolutely love this song...It does such a lovely job of exuding feelings of going home from school at dusk in October w/just a nip of winter chill in the air...I love it!
I had to hear this song today 10-31-2022. Living in the northeast all my life and then moving to Florida - I miss the Autumn leaves and the chill in the air. This is such a beautiful song.
Barry....I haven't been able to find this one for a few months. It is a great song and I love to hear you sing it and play the piano. It is just spell-binding for me. I have loved you since 1974.......BB
The gorgeous lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer many years ago, but he passed away before completing the lyric, and his widow, gave the lyrics to Barry Manilow, to complete. He of course, added music to it, and it became one of the most beautiful songs I think he’s ever written Barry Manilow said it’s his favorite song, and it certainly is my favorite song of his. Poignant, touching, sad and tender, I loved it, and was touched by it when it first came out, and now that I am much much older, it fills me with longing, as it always did, perhaps even more now. I, too, hate when October goes ….
The words were originally written by lyricist Johnny Mercer, who passed away before the song was completed, and his wife gave the partially completed lyric to Barry Manilow who finish the lyric and put it to music. It’s my favorite song that he does and he has said it is also his favorite song, it is so poignant and sweet and sad and I also hate to see October go….
This achingly poignant song creates such beautiful but melancholy images in my mind. Of someone who has lost their youth and lost the great love of their life. Now facing another cold winter alone. So incredibly beautiful but so sad at the same time. I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it on his Paradise Cafe album. So fitting that he wrote the music to Johnny Mercer's touching lyrics.
On the Phil Donahue Show.... It was his decription, of being given Johnny Mercer's lyrics, how he felt honored etc, that led me to record the audio of this. The only version I knew for many years. - Good to find the original here so well perserved, after 40 years.
I haven't heard this one for a while and it is so good. Barry...Did you write this one? It is really a beautiful song both the lyrics and melody. Just the right time of the year to listen to this one. Thanks for giving it to us, Barry....You look so different in this one, but as usual so nice and handsome. You can wear anything and still be the most handsome man in the world.....................Just my opinion since 1974......................................Betsy
Barry...I know you gave Frank Sinatra this song and he was going to try it, but he got sick then. I would have loved to hear you and Frank do this one together.Love you.................Betsy Basile
Letr me tell you about October- no I will not but oh yeah that is our (my husband and I special month when we have 2 of my daughters and one grandson born and back in the day a few friends and will always melt but my man well we got stuff too and I say I will be the strong one or try too. So if I play words with friends ( won't but I play a different word game to keep me sharp but not with anyone cause you don't know who really you are scrabbling with but content well sometimes when I listen to you and I say I too saw you in March in my home town too. Take care with this wish too- bye my heart but forever and a day when we melt and sometimes want to fly away and glad we have music too to help.
The absolute BEST song from 2:00am Paradise Cafe. This song has been with me for all of my life. I used this song to get into choir in High School and this is my go to for karaoke. This is the one song that the average Barry Manilow fan has NEVER heard.
