The only issue with using old tech like phones, tablets, or even computers is that if the software isn't being updated anymore, you really shouldn't connect them to the internet. Unpatched security holes can cause all kinds of issues, not only for yourself, but also other people.
@_Digitalguy
@_Digitalguy 6 дней назад
that is if you don't know how security works, you can easily use old devices, especially mobile ones, as "non primary devices" connected to the internet if you know what you do. If you don't yes, stay away from the internet

The biggest issue is that modern software is so bloated, technically we wouldn't need more RAM or processing power on our phones (messaging, some Instagram/Facebook, taking a few pictures were all fine 10 years ago). Devs just don't optimize their stuff anymore or fill it with unnecessary crap. I remember 10 years ago apps were usually 5-15mb big when downloading from the Play Store, now most apps are atleast 80-100mb

I use an Apple 30 inch Cinema Display from 2004. The picture quality is still fantastic and is sharper than most computer monitors sold in stores today. It has fantastic colours and I have no reason to upgrade it. It has a beautiful design aswell and still looks modern on my desk. I still use my iPhone 5c every day as an offline podcast device. because the OS doesn't update it means that the podcast app doesn't update either, and it's the most recent version that still has the playlist function (I have no idea what moron thought it was a good idea to remove playlists from a podcast app!). I need to replace the headphone jack (it cuts out at the slightest of movements) and the screen (it's cracked at the top, but not in any way that affects usability) but they are both fairly easy fixes. And I've got a couple of old laptops that do a great job of ripping CDs using DBPowerAmp to FLAC and ALAC at the same time.

@@J4ckC4ver the apple podcast app swapped from playlists to Stations, which (from my understanding, as I haven't used them since I wasn't able to do basic playlist functions when I first tried, and never used it again) tries to be more automated and tries to sort it for you. I did a quick search to see if they had added the functionality back in, but it seems (as of this time last year) stations are still the work around for not having playlists in the Apple podcast app. Not sure how you've got playlists in the up to date apple podcast app, but I'm happy with using my old phone just for podcasts.

We didn't get the house because we were dealing with the executor of an estate, which happened to be an attorney, who kept insisting on a larger than 20% down payment on the home. However, I remember telling my wife that we wouldn't update the appliances or the central ai unit as it lasted this long, and it'll last longer than whatever we replace it with.

I drive a 13 yr old car. Works fine. My IPhone is now a mini wi-fi tablet and pocket camera - it’s a 2016 model. My phone is a 2007 Samsung. Works fine, good battery life - and it’s only used as a phone. Hi-fi? Ranges in age from 55 yrs old (turntable) through 40 yrs old (CD player) to 25-30 yrs old - amp and speakers. All work great, with minimal maintenance required. TV - 25 yrs old - works fine. All of this stuff I keep using because it’s really well built (some of the hi fi gear is ridiculously over engineered), and I see absolutely no need to upgrade any of it. I have to use more modern stuff for work - and without exception, all of it has been overly complicated and unreliable. My work laptop has been back with the manufacturer for over a year with an unknown fault they keep failing to fix, and my work smartphone (a Samsung) makes a great paperweight, but a useless smart phone.

I’ve just learned this. My Sonos Beam (4 years old) went down after the big internet outage. There’s no ability to use it without an internet connection .. absolute madness as it’s just a speaker connected via a cable. There is no physical reset button on the device, the plug is hardwired to the back of the device, it won’t reconnect and the only option is to unplug it.. and the plug is behind a built in outlet that I’ll need to disassemble to get into it. Sonos have automatically been removed from my list of companies I’d purchase from ever again because if they ever go out of business or drop support for devices you can no longer use.. a wired speaker. No need for this.

The oldest piece of tech I use is my keyboard on my home desk setup, I use an IBM Model M13 buckling spring keyboard manufactured in 1998, although the Model Ms actually go back much older than that to the mid 1980s. It's amazing to type on and is by far my favourite keyboard I own. It works perfectly on any modern PC or Mac just as long as you get an active PS/2 to USB adapter which I have. Currently typing this comment on it using an Apple Silicon Mac and it works great. It lacks a Windows key, so you do have to change the modifier keys in macOS to make it work but that's easy to do and tbh it's worth it for the excellent typing feel the buckling springs provide. I have a few other older things in my setup, I use a pair of Logitech 2.1 speakers that are about 20 or so years old that still work great, as well as a Sony video camera I use for my own RU-vid videos I've owned for almost 10 years that still looks, sounds and functions perfectly as if it were brand new. My rule is that I'll only replace something if it breaks or is somehow no longer compatible anymore.

I went and bought a used set of Audeze Penrose headphones last summer. Knew that the battery would eventually be poo poo, but the deal was just too good to pass on. That and I'd JUST gotten into planar magnetic videos on RU-vid 🤫 lol. Anywho, earlier this year i hit up their customer support to see what (if anything) could be done to revive these to their former heights of glory. They told me there's nothing they could do as the company (cuz they were well beyond their warranty period).... Buttttttt, the kind man on the phone explained how easy it would be to do a replacement, told me details about the battery, and told me how the part would be easy to find on AliExpress. Just thought I'd share so that folks can be aware that companies sometimes actually do think about us folks who plan to use their products for quite some time. And Audeze (at least prior to the Sony deal) was one of them. And yes people, i found the battery and successfully completed the surgery 💪😎 ..and ill keep doing it for as long as i can find suitable parts.

Old tech is also more repairable most of the time. Even when it comes to Apple, Macs used to have easily swappable batteries and modular RAM and storage. It’s a shame modern tech doesn’t have that anymore and most of the time is made cheaply, so long-term longevity is not great

My laptop is a 2011 15" MBP that's still running for whatever reason (yeah, this is the one that's infamous for dgpu failures) I've also been able to repurpose a 2009 27" imac as a display for my computer, and my S9+ is about 6 years old at this point. There's a few other older things I have that are still in service, but those are the most major ones. While not tech, my stereo is still powered by a rotel RA-931 mkii from 1999. It's old, but still somehow works fine.

I have an old Jabra headset for work, about 15 years old. Fully integrated touch controlls, super light weight. Very high range. The new Jabra headsets my company offers are heavy and the connection gets lost when I get out if the room. The sound quallity sucks and the mute function doesn't work half the time. Just replaced the batterie and the ear piece coushions (the leather wore down) for the old ones and they are as good as new.

Mac os 9.0.4 never lets me down, Tiger Shuriken 10.4.12 is also strong. New things break before the older ones. My solder OC mac mini G4 seem to never dye. Hopefully there are people at Canon that enable both printing from appletalk and Airprint, so you get printing from 8.5.1 (1998) to iphone 15 on the same device at seconds of interval. Just a pun to explan that support is possible, if we want. I agree on this keyboard, as long as you like cleaning it. Never try to repair something that is not broken. Most updates or upgrades are a risk and a pain. Like wwhen apple removes php from mac os ... I sarted on windows after Mojave. Windows is quite good once debloated.

The B & W Zeppelin mini is a great USB speaker for close range. £30 from CeX in the UK 2nd hand, audio quality is exceptional - identical to big Zeppelin but minus the Subwoofer.. I also have a Zeppelin V1 and the airplay lightening Zeppelin model, which are exceptional speakers. Much more bass on the later versions. B & W only made the Zeppelin Air (in dock and lightning versions), Zeppelin mini and A7 with USB compatibility. ;)
